Northerner Wanting to Move Down South

I have a sister who has worked in various parts of the US for a few years now, same company, different branches.

She is stuck in Shreveport LA right now and can’t stand it. The reverse racism took her by surprise seeing as California where she was previous was fantastic and so were the people she worked with. The people of Shreveport are very guarded and don’t go out of there way to make you feel welcome at all. The woman who runs HR (who is black) told her in no uncertain terms that she never will either…nice. The whole branch behaved this way. They work with her(tolerate is more like it) but go to a company function and she was treated like a leper.

My sister is not racist in any way, shape, or form, she’s dated black guys in the past so that ain’t it. She is friendly and outgoing so that’s not it either.

However when she toured the Tennessee plant and stayed there for a couple weeks the folks there were wonderfull and so welcoming. She was trying to get trasferred there actually because of the great atmosphere and work culture. She was repeatedly asked to go to co-workers houses for dinner, movie night etc. which she accepted.

Shreveport people? No fucking way.

The’re both considered south yes? So why were the Louisiana folks such assholes and the Tennessee folks great? Same company, same business model etc.

If I have offended anyone from LA I apologise, just my 2c. I’m curious to know why the difference in attitudes.

Lowsy-ana sucks man. I can’t say they’re all bad, because I have met… 3 people from LA who were cool. But seriously. Louisiana sucks.

I do like Tom Brady’s hair though lol

BJB we talked about that situation, to me it also speaks of the management in the LA office. Top dog there sucks and shit rolls down hill.
Well it’s a moot point for her now anyway, she’s being tranferred to Ann Arbour, Michigan in a couple of months at her request. She’s great at her job and they don’t want to lose her so they agreed.

I will say this, my opinion of America went way up after farting around on these forums.

Thank you T-Nation and the mods.

With all due respect, its a good thing you’re not thinking southern California cause no one likes mass-holes around here (or anywhere for that matter)

The Patriots suck.

No ones likes Ben Aflack.

The Celtics suck.

Tom Brady has bad hair.

Crab cakes taste like dong.

The Red Sox suck.

Baked beans are awful.

The movie “The Town” was a huge rip off of “Heat”.

Remember… I did say “with all due respect”

Crab cakes are a Maryland thing.

The south is anywhere you can get sweet tea at McDonalds…

Im from Virginia and love it, but IMHO Bama Texas and SC are where its at, obviously dependent on if you can get a job there. Good luck man

A couple months ago I made a thread that is quite similar to yours, although my situation is already in motion. Graduating college in a few months with an engineering degree, born, raised and went to school in Chicago and most likely moving to Houston, TX area in August for a good job.

I wasn’t as thrilled about going to the south as you seem to be, but the idea of a new experience and culture is starting to grow on me. Besides, as long as there are hot Asian women in the Houston area, which I’ve heard is the case, then I think I’ll be okay.

damn you and your fact based comments!

Ok so it goes again:

Kevin Garnett looks like he has pubes on his face.

You’re the only state that allows same sex marriage (I guess that explains the one below)

You’re states best baseball players nickname is “Big Papi” why would you guys call another man “Big Papi”? thats gay (see above)

Second, only to KG, David Ortiz has the stupidest facial hair of all time.

Boston Accents are the worst.

If you’re coming down here Atlanta, Raleigh, Charlotte are some of the best cities especially for young adults. Friendly people, great weather (it’s 75 and sunny here right now), and plenty to do.

I’m from Maryland (currently living in DC), but spent 6 years in Richmond and generally enjoyed it. Richmond isn’t considered the South by many, but it definitely has a different feel to it than DC, which isn’t much of a northern city compared to NYC or Boston.

Charlotte is another cool town. I’m not sure about job ops for you though, as these cities are probably better for people into banking/finance who don’t want to be in NYC.

I’m no Magellan, but in my limited experience the hottest women in the world live in south TX

If by hot you mean slutty then yes. Plenty of Girls Gone Wild tapes made in the South of Texas.

Gotcha. What kind of mechanical engineering are you going for?
I’m thinking automotive but I’m really not sure yet.
Checkout the Greenville-Spartanburg area of South Carolina…

I live in Charleston now, because the job brought me here after getting out of the Army, but I grew up in the Greenville area and will eventually return there.

I would recommend Greenville for any number of reasons, regardless of your career plans. But you mentioned automotive engineering, which would make Greenville an ideal choice.

Greenville has a history of manufacturing, for decades it was textiles. Now it is becoming a hub for the automotive manufacturing and R&D industries.

In the 1980’s, it became home of Michelin’s North American Headquarters…

In 2002 it became the home of BMW’s only North American manufacturing facility…

And in 2007, Clemson University created the International Center for Automotive Research an impressive campus for automotive R&D…

You should check out the area…great place to be.

Greenville is nice…Spartanburg is a shit hole.

the people in Spartanburg are a lot friendlier than they are in Charleston. I’ve never had a problem there.
you definitely want Greenville with automotive. the big things in the Charleston area are the Boeing assembly plant and Spawars. there are some others but nothing like Greenville.
there are a lot of things to do in your off time in SC. hiking, mtn. biking, the beach, all types of music(great metal in Spartanburg), salt and freshwater fishing. learn to throw a cast net and get your own shrimp during baiting season. you can ride your motorcycle or play golf pretty much year round.
the food is pretty good. if you do make it to Charleston there are some great places to eat. remember its “I’ll have some grits” not “I’ll have a grit”.

If you move to the Atlanta area, and are fascinated with the idea of swimming in the Chattahoochie River—DON’T. No telling what you will end up with. Canoeing is fine, rafting is fine, swimming is not. It used to be party zone back in the 70’s, and the bottom is littered with broken glass from liquor bottles, edges of cans, industrial waste, etc. Plenty of swimming options in mountain rivers just a short drive away. If mountain biking is your bag, it is all nearby. The Silver Comet Trail is a paved biking road that goes for miles, to Alabama and beyond. Plenty of suburban areas around here, with people from all walks of life and ethnicities living in the same neighborhoods.
