Non-Competitive, Want to Be Big Strong and Conditioned

I’m natural and it worked for me. Just because a steroid user trains a certain way or creates a training system doesn’t invalidate it for natural lifters. Almost all of my greatest influences in training have been enhanced lifters (aside from some of the pre-steroid guys like Steve Reeves and Reg Park).

Try westside for 16 weeks doing it exactly as prescribed and you will feel it for yourself. Some programs done the way as prescribed by “enhanced” will drive a natural into the ground over the course of a macrocycle. However, if you slightly tweak the program to push hard but not beyond your recovery abilities you will progress just like anyone else.

You will find, in your pursuit of fitness, a lot of people say silly things.

two options:

  1. they dont know what they’re talking about (probable)
  2. it only works when steroids are applied to fill the gaps in horrendously shitty programming

You are getting a lot of solid suggestions/advice but I’ll X2 Tactical Barbell.

How do you do westside as a raw lifter?

Yeah, I think I’ll definitely start with Tactical Barbell. I want to see if I can get to 210-220 someday in terms of bodyweight.

What do you think are the silliest things people have said about fitness?

It would be more productive to discuss where to NOT find silliness, as that is far more rare.

“The Complete Keys to Progress” is an excellent place to start in that regard. Learn all about the stuff that worked back in the 60s, and how we already had it all figured out then. From there, you can see just how predatory influencers are out there trying to fleece people.

Powerlifting Basics Texas Style by Paul Kelso is prophetic that way as well. Paul was writing in the 80s and forecasting exactly what was going to happen today.

Randall Strossen’s “Super Squats” does a fantastic job of detailing the history of exercise from the turn of the 20th century. Back in the 30s, Joe Hise figured out that squats and milk could turn a man into a monster.

Marty Gallagher’s “Purposeful Primitive” does a fantastic job of covering the programs and diets of the greats from the 60s through the early 2000s, and finds the parallels in excellence irrespective of the sport. Powerlifting, strongman, bodybuilding: the principles remain.

There are a LOT more, but those are great places to start.

Great. I’ve been drinking a lot of milk recently. My birthday is coming up, so I’ll put all those on my wishlist!

I was reading this article and it made me think about this thread. This program looks awesome. It’s written by Pat Davidson, who’s an absolute beast and a really smart dude! To me, this looks really fun but many consider me pretty demented haha! He sells a full version of this program on his site as well as a sequel.
