And now for something completely different (sorry Monte Python).
DB Squats 40s, 50s x 15, 70s x 12, 80s x 10
calve raises - (toes on thin board) holding 40s, 50, 60s x max
DB DL - 50s x 12, 60 x 10, 80s x 8
Bend row - 135wu, 185 x 12 x 3
shrugs - 225 x max x 3
Still a work in progress. Probably throw in pullups. Didn’t feel like I got enough of a workout in.
DB squats, are those are difficult as they sound? I have done goblet squat with a single DB but I notice you are using pairs. Those 80s would have been fun.
Just held the DBs at my side, had a low bench behind me, sat on the bench, back up again. Gave a quickly aborted try at holding them on my shoulders and figured crushing my skull wasn’t worth it. Added: When I got ready to do shrugs I thought why didn’t I just shrug the DBs at the top of every squat rep. Gonna try doing it that way next time.
Dojo, 3/4 hr kata, 1/4 hr non stop heavy bag, 1/2 hr weapons. Felt good.
Hitting a heavy bag is hard work. My parents had one at the house when I was a teenager. We would set a timer and hit the bag for rounds. It was eye opening to realize how fit a boxer is, and the bag wasn’t hitting back either.
A boxer’s workout (and competitive MMA) is punishing. People don’t realize the the endurance it takes. I boxed Boy’s Club starting at 14 for a couple of years as did all my brothers as did my father. Kind of a family tradition. Stopped when I took up other sports and there wasn’t enough time. Sports where I wasn’t getting hit in the face had more appeal for some reason.
Seated Db Press - 35s x 12, 45s x 10, 55s x 8
lat raises - 20x15 x 3
rear lat hitch - 35 x 15, 45 x 12, 50 x 10
facepulls, rope - 80 x 15 x 3
Hammer curls - 25 x 18, 30 x 15, 35 x 12, 40 x 10
overhead tri ext (rope) - 60 x 18, 70 x 15, 80 x 12
straight bar forearm curl - 45 x 20, 65 x 15, 85 x 12
Don’t do seated DB press much so felt a little awkward.
Reckon youd be the man to ask this, i spent all of my teens, 20s and up until my mid 30s training in martial arts, kickboxing until my mid 20s and then Wing Tsun and Escrima for several years, work at the time got in the way.
Anyway, fancy getting into Karate once i get my weight down a bit more. I like the relentless forward attack style of Kyokuskin, was just wondering what style or styles of karate have you trained in yourself?
First time I studied a martial art was from an Army corporal who always owned my Dad money so he had to baby sit us while Mom and Dad went out to pay it off. He was of Japanese decent from California. Taught us boys a few basic stances, punches and kicks. Also taught us 5 card draw and craps. Not even sure what his style was. First formal training was in Belgium and it was Isshin-ryu. and I made it to 3rd Kyu Brown Belt before leaving. Back in the US a couple of GIs were doing Shito-ru. This was pre- 70’s, pre Bruce Lee movies and the martial arts explosion, so it was basically them. They wouldn’t train me until they got permission from my Dad. Stayed with it until they were reassigned and a new Sgt showed up and I saw him doing a style I fell in love with. Shotokan. Studied it and got my first Black Belt before joining the service. Did no martial arts for several years because of military training and mission requirements. Got assigned to Korea and my Korean counter parts all did Tae Kwon Do. Probably the martial art I’m least suited for. Never been limber enough no matter how I much I stretched. Managed to make my Black Belt but only because of my other training. I think its been ruined by the interest in it as a sport. Married the wife, stationed in the PI, her brothers and some nephews teach escrima, kali, and arnis. I study with them when Im there but they pretty much take it easy on old Lolo (grandpa). I’m way pass be agile and limber enough for it. Never studied Kyokushin-ryu but been around it and it’s brutal. Unless it’s changed full contact all the way in tournaments. If you want contact, that’s the way to go. Which brings us back to Shoto-kan which I’ve been practicing again since my several injuries in the military
and to keep from feeling sorry for myself. Going on 30 years back at it. To me Shoto-kan is one of the most basic more basic styles even though it ha a high number of kata. I like the concentration on lower stances and power strikes. I do it now more for the peace it brings me than training than for fighting. Sorry for the very long answer.
3 mile run, 7 mile bike. took advantage of beautiful day. Cool and nothing but sunshine.
Bench - 135 wu, 185 x 12 x 3
DB incline Bench - 40wu, 50 x 15, 60 x 12, 70 x 10
cables - low to high - 30 x 15 x 3
Cables - high to low - 40 x 15 x 3
Flyes -25 x 15 x 3
Bent rows - 135 x 10, 185 x 8 x 3
straight arm pulldowns - 60 x 15 x 3
Reverse grip pulldowns - 110 x 12 x 3
That’s really cool that you had the opportunity to study so many different styles of martial arts. I’ve always wanted to try that but doubt that I could sustain it now (because of injuries).
Hi Harry,
Sorry am only getting back to ya now mate…thank you for your detailed answer. Its getting me food for thought. Shotokan was actually the other form i was looking into, its one punch / strike basic effective techniques are appealing.
Like wise with TKD, am not limber enough, but also im not a big believer in head kicks (outside of competition), the hands and grappling tends to be where its at in reality. Also never been one for the spiritual side of martial arts, i didnt like preforming the forms neither in Wing Tsun, but i liked the basic premise of direct rapid fire puching style, anti grappling techniques, and low kicks etc. Escrima i found very practical.
I honestly believe theres merit to every combative art, but its trying the find that best method for your abilities and beliefs.
Am not a block and counter guy, am more pre emptive / dont let them even finish the sentence kinda guy. Not to sound like a thug though, but you instinctively know when its gonna kick off by someones body language, tone, unprovoked verbal abuse, posturing etc, moreover those sort of people usually aren’t alone.
But anyway. Thanks again
Rob

Spend most of the day on the internet and on the phone. The Philippines has changed entry requirements over 8 times in the last 5 days. Go to their Bureau of Immigration’s website and it has a list of requirements. Go to their Bureau of Tourism website and it has a different list of requirements and even says ignore what the Bureau of Immigration says. My wife is a dual citizen so she is under one set of rules and I another. Usually I’m covered by being married to her. Finally got hold of a good friend in the government there and he’s working it for us. About 400pm the wife comes in my office and says, “go run for a while then we’ll eat”. So I did 3 miles and then ate. Frustrating day.

Haven’t had a real good lifting session recently. Got into it today and hit the zone. Just wanted to keep going. After the first few body part sets stopped counting and just did each set until I couldn’t lift it and then increased the weights. Sauna, shower, coffee with Cousin Mike after and felt great. Had many emails from the PI saying don’t worry, just come, we’ll meet you at the airport and you will get in. Ate lunch with 2 brothers and a couple of nephews at that fine dining establishment O’Bryan’s Steak House, no tables, just benches. Best and cheapest Delmonico rib eyes around and a great salad bar. Couple of the best waitresses in town, too. Great-nieces. Sippin some Jameson Black barrel , smokin a Arturo Fuente 858 natural and puttin my latest episode of Heels on. Outstanding day all around all around. Yesterday already forgotten.
That looks like a ton o’ fun.
Seriously.
Looks like you got a great lifting session in and that is good news on your entry to the Philippines. Between you and Shane, I think I am going to plug in some sets to failure next week. Time to switch it up. Glad you had fun at the steak house too. Sounds like it was awesome.
Living the dream, as usual. Stay strong in PI.
Sounds like a kick ass day.
