No Promises This Time

Sorry to hear about the family situation. Hope your mother is OK. You’ve got me thinking here so I may go on a rant. This is just what I think. I am not offended if you don’t agree and hope that you aren’t offended by me either as I respect everyone’s point of view on this.

As for the vaccine, my family and I still haven’t gotten it and I only know a few other folks who haven’t. I have spoken to quite a few vaccinated people recently who have/recently had covid (after being vaccinated). From what I understand, vaccinated people can get it and spread it just as easily as unvaccinated people. They may be better off if they get it though, so they may have a milder version of it. That is the way I understand it. I just don’t trust things that were developed that quickly that seem to pass by most of your body’s natural defense systems. No one seems to know what the long term effects are from this vaccine and that concerns me. Don’t get me wrong, if I were 60+, I would go out right now and get it. But, in theory, I may have another 40 years or so left on this Earth so I am more hesitant to get it. To me, it seems more like a flu shot and less like a vaccine. You can get the shot and still contract the virus. You may actually get really sick too, but the general theory is that if you do get it, you may have a milder case. And the rate of success seems very sketchy at best. I’m not sure what they do where you live, but here, early in the year, they stopped tracking infection statistics among people who were vaccinated. I thought that was crazy as you have no way of knowing how effective that is. Now, here we are on the back end and everyone is pointing fingers at the unvaxxed folks. And I’m sitting here wondering, “wait, what statistics are there to back this up? Certainly none that I have seen.”

Personally, I don’t trust anything that is being presented to me on this topic. I’m seeing news stories that 99% of people in the hospital are unvaxxed. Then, my mother in-law, who’s job is to review the cause of death and health information for every person who dies every day in her hospital states to me, “I don’t know where they are getting this information from, but they are full of s#!t. There are vaccinated people dying every day in my hospital and plenty more in ICU.” To me, that is the only information that I trust.

I am leaning toward getting the vaccine as there may be some benefit to it, and it is likely going to be required to get into restaurants, etc. before long, but I really feel like we are being forced into getting something that is very risky in itself. And to be honest, I’m not sure which is riskier. And I fear that we won’t know the answer to that for some time. Sorry rant over.

Not offended at all. Rants are good for the soul. I’m 66 and the youngest of the brothers and the wife and I got the shots as soon as we could. I believe it’s up to the individual if they get the shot or not and the way numbers and facts keep changing makes me a little suspicious, too. What pissed us off is you don’t go testing what you believe on someone else, especially your 95 year old Great Grandmother. She’s had the shot but even a milder case at her age ain’t good. He also decided to lecture a family of lots of vets going back 5 generations now on “freedoms, rights and liberties”. We fought for them.

I understand. My wife’s aunt and uncle have been going over to her 95 year old grandmother’s house without masks and unvaxed. That, to me, is irresponsible. If you want to get it, great. If not, at least take measures not to spread it. Hope you all are safe down there.

Ida Workouts - Sawed up 3 downed Bradford Pears (hate them shallow rooted suckers) used a 20" Hasqvarna chainsaw. Couple of friends of my mother’s and the whole family have a long, long “driveway” to their house (really a dirt road). Trees fell cross it and they couldn’t get out or in. Used one of the brothers backhoe loader and a loaned dump truck to pull the stumps and move all to main road for county to pick up. Put up plastic sheeting on an elderly neighbors roof to keep the rain out. Rebuilt a wheelchair ramp. Promised to help rebuild a boat dock which I will inspet carefully as to not repeat the Cottonmouth incident of about 10 or so years ago. I received some minor assistance from several brothers and assorted relatives. Hope to get back to the gym tomorrow. Won’t be swimming in the river for a few days. Running very high. Hope you all have a good Labor Day, if you get it off and/or celebrate it where you are.

Woke up still full from yesterday’s picnic. River’s still running way to fast so headed in to the Natatorium. 100m x 2, 200m x 2, 500m x 1, outta the pool and straight into a 2.5mi run. Went from there to the college throwing area and got in some shot and hammer throwing. Feeling good. Hope the meet next month holds up. First one in about 2 years. First time I’ll get to compete in this age group.

Glad you and yours are OK after that storm. Great job helping others too. Nice work on the throwing and on those Oly lifts. Your training is very diverse and you seem to be very successful at all of it. Hopefully the river calms down soon and you can get back in there.

Day was so damn beautiful just had to throw. Not sure what rules they’re using at the upcoming meet (different governing bodies) so practiced under the ones used in prior meets. There maybe being only one meet the entry list is growing. Once inside the stadium, throwing area, you’re not allowed in the circle. Once warmup is called you get 2 throws. Then 3 throws and depending on the number of throwers and flights, top 12 or so go to the finals for 3 more throws. Throws from the prelims may or may not carry over to the finals. So got to the field, flapped my arms around, stretching, or as near as I come to it. For the “you should always stretch” crowd numerous studies show in the throwning events it’s better to NOT stretch and be tight. I passed on practicing my trash talking as I was afraid someone might see me talking to myself, and you know. Took my 3 throws. Fetched the discus after each throw and waited about 10 minutes between throws. In a meet after every throw an official calls " Smith up, Jones on deck, Johnson in the hole". Once you’re up you’ve got 2 minutes to start your throw. If your in a big flight and every thrower takes say 1.5 minutes it can be over 20 minutes between throws. Anyway, took my last 3 throws, assumed I’d make the finals and took 3 more. Feeling good. Got one way out a ways. After the simulated meet took another 18 throws to decide what rim weight I was feeling good with. My favorite is a 80% rim weight. Gotta let it off the index finger just right to impart maximum spin. I have a 90% but it’s very unforgiving. So, a long and confusing post. If you made it this far thanks for staying with me.
