Nihilism and Fight Club

You’re an individual. I respect that. I think?

I don’t think this thread is really all that entertaining or funny except for this quote. I literally lol’d at this which led to my roommate asking what’s so funny. I can’t even really explain it though.

how can u not find this thread entertaining… flavadave u are a fool

Meangenes if you do study philosophy and give a damn about your life then you better stop playing World Of Warcraft. This is a meathead forum. We don’t have any dungeon strategies here.

Gay men can’t be masculine?
Nope.

Meathead forum huh? What do you lift? I bet I lift more. And I’m not even a meathead!

I think most people that call themselves nihilists really aren’t. Nihilism is totally different from existentialism; it isn’t an extreme form of it.

Also, meangenes, you use slang terms like “nope” in your posts…if you knew stupider was slang, why would you correct him?

Unless, of course, you needed a red herring.
Because it was a cheap shot. I wanted to shoot back.

When Tyler Durden says “It is only after we have lost everything that we are free to do anything”, what does that mean?

Maybe it has something to do with “emptying your cup” of all preconceived ideas, notions and values which were given to you by society and then finding your own?
I assume it’s referring to the fear inherit in having more to lose. If you have status it’s harder to reject the herd, if you run a huge mutual fund it’s harder to take risks than a low entry day trader, it’s harder to be a warrior seeking immortality in legend if you have a wife and kids etc. So the guy in fight club had to have what he was afraid to lose forced away from him so that he could move on. In a similar vein many people in very closed community religions have a hard time leaving even if they want to because they become ostracized from everyone they know. I’m thinking of mormons is an example.

Yea sure anyway, you can only prove what you test right?

Wrong. You’ve failed to distinguish between an a priori and a posteriori statement. Some truths are completely self-evident by definition and we are able to draw conclusions without having to experience them first-hand, e.g. We don’t have to encounter ice to know that it’s cold, provided we know the definition – cold water.

I’d call you out on the rest, but your vague rehashing of Descartes’ Meditations is pretty consistent throughout – vague for the sake of vague. His thought experiments in doubt ultimately yielded the conclusion that his extreme way of thinking had only backed him into a corner, as he could not doubt his doubt. The function of such a way of thinking has its place, in avoiding hasty conclusions, provided the student doesn’t go overboard with it. Sooooo…consider this your life vest.
I love callouts

I love jerkwad

This thread is like a kid who just got a new toy, and runs around the neighborhood telling everyone how cool his toy is.

When it turns out that no one is truly impressed by the wonder of the kid’s new toy, said kid starts telling the unimpressed peers that his dad can beat up their dads.

At which level of consciousness does one gain a bullshit detector? I have one, and it’s going off louder than if it were shoved up the bulls ass.

One more question - why is it so important for you to let us know your philosophy? As pookie has alluded to - you sound more like you are regurgitating a Tony Roberts buzzword glossary than spouting a philosophy.

I haven’t seen this much bitching about a persons opinion since I’ve been here. Way to go you strong little T-men you.

What a bunch of fucking pussies. Haha.

You’ve done as much, if not more, bitching as anyone in this thread.

So someone disagrees with you, and voices their opinion about it. That makes them a pussy? How old are you?

Seems to me instead of blathering about Nihilism, and enlightenment, you need to quit worrying about others opinions. And the name calling could use some work as well. Or is creativity not on your current plane of enlightenment?

Missed the point. Thanks for clarifying that you missed the point of my Existentialism.

A point? Where? Where was a point made? Has anyone here seen a point? Was it a two dimensional planar point that fell flat? Was is an infinitely expanding point that filled itself exponentially until it collapsed and disappeared?
Now THAT is funny.

And where in here do you argue against my philosophy?

You didn’t, that’s why I called you a pussy. Because you’re whining not disagreeing.

I’m glad you cleared up why you had to resort to name calling. I was under the impression that you were a clueless, whiny little child.

But which am I - a pussy, or a faggot? Not that it matters.

I don’t argue with idiots. I just tell them that they smell like bullshit. It is a double dip in your case as I also get to expose you for the childish little bitch you are.

This is the response from the self-proclaimed “enlightened!”

Haha right. Who are you? I’ll have my way with you next.
