Nighttime Hunger a Good Thing?

Hi

I read the Nighttime Blues article featured in the special reports section, a few weeks ago.

A week later or so, i read an article at another site ( i don’t remember where ) which contradicted the Nighttime Blues article in saying that: having a protein/carb etc. deficit when you’re sleeping is actually a good thing for growing muscle etc. because your body “wants” it more.

I’ve heard about this concept in Health class, except it was applied to anorexic girls who don’t eat anything, get skinny, and then when they eat again they gain it all back because their bodies are trying to retain all the calories that they can.

Can the same logic be applied to protein absorbtion? Can having a slight protein deficit at nighttime or maybe once a week be a beneficial thing for someone?

Well that is total BS. If that were true we would all eat once a day becuase our body would “want it more”? When you fast overnight your metabolisim slows down and cortisol levels rise. Consuming some slow digesting protein and some fat will put an end to this.

I dont think you are totally correct.

Even casein breaks down in a few hours.
where whey might be digested in an hour or two, casein might take 3-4 hours.

with fat, it may be a little longer.

i sleep 8-9 hours a night, so while Grow! and fish oil capsules are great, they do not put an end the problem of not having aminos in sufficient quantities throughout the WHOLE night.

with that being said, slow digesting protein before bed is still a great tactic for muscle growth.

Thanks! Well that clears that up, now the next question is: what do i eat to last me through the night?

could you guys give me an idea of what your eating schedule from 5PM - bedtime looks like?

I was under the assumption that Casein is broken down longer than 3-4 hours. It’s supposed to form a type of gelatinous blob in your stomach, resisting digestion to a point.

Anyhoo, on a side note… I actually used to sleep-eat a few years back. I ate a LOT throughout the day, and still managed to wake up with protein wrappers and turkey slices strewn about me in the morning… I wasn’t concious at all, yet stumbled to my kitchen and grabbed all types of ready to eat protein. It’s kind of funny actually. I used to try to hide the boxes of bars from myself.

It stopped after I started taking slower acting proteins… (Casein) plus fat, like an earlier poster said… it gives you a sense of fullness that lasts for a while. Although, I still mix a scoop or two when I wake up in the middle of the night to piss.

No matter to what time of day it is, I eat every 1 1/2 hours when concious…and probably every 4 hours sleeping… ( I wake up frequently)

Listen

At your age, sleep is more important than waking up to eat protein. Don’t get hung up on the littlest bs.

It’s not important to be ‘perfect’ all the time. Hell, if you can eat right 90% of the time your in the top 10% of the country in how you eat.

Eat as much as you want/can during the day. Before bed, a supp drink like Grow! is great, but so is a little cottage cheese.

Don’t overcomplicate this shit. And I say again because it is VERY important
Sleep is more important than getting protein every 2 to 4 to 6 hours at night.

Lift your weights. Eat smart. Rest.
At your age Mother Nature will take care of the rest.

Haha, thanks Pops. :stuck_out_tongue:

Pops! You little whipper snapper

Want to really grow, eat LF cottage cheese, or a Grow! shake before bed. But while you do it, read 1 article. Every night. Hit the archives, or do it by author. But 1 article a night.

Do a T-Nation search for “John Berardi”. Read any of his food and eating articles. He tells you what to eat and when. And pay attention.
