And yet, it’s amazing what soldiers of fortune will do for a few million.
It would make those raping shitheads nervous at least.

Highly skilled African mercenaries are hard to come by these days. After the end of white rule in South Africa and Rhodesia(Zimbabwe) there were plenty of well trained mercenaries. Not so much today.
The big problem is nobody has given a shit for to long. This isn’t going away, it’s only going to get worse. If people don’t start giving a shit, this will eventually get to big to ignore. It’s been going on for years and has only gotten bigger and bolder. Right now it’s 279 school girls, what’s next? 500, 1000, 10,000?

You are forgetting about the millions of slaves for hundreds of years and I’m the calloused asshole?
The region has centuries of history in the human slave trade. Everybody is calling to change that now?
And-
No you can’t, because
you don’t know how intelligence is gathered and developed.
We don’t just air drop them crates of intelligence or e-mail them intelligence. We put boots on the ground. The best boots our military has to offer. They go into very unfriendly places to observe, interview, interrogate and sometimes directly engage an enemy.
As was pointed out to me earlier in the thread- It’s very complicated.

You think the only way to gather intelligence is to hide people in bushes next to compounds?
We’ve been gathering intelligence on al qaeda for the last 20 years at least. We have a lot of intelligence on the goings on in Somalia as it is a hotbed of terrorist activity. I don’t know how much we have to give to the Ethiopians, but they are ready and willing to use their own boots to root these guys out and have been in spite of the fact we haven’t provided them much.
All they are asking for is funding and what ever intelligence we can provide. Unless there is an unforeseen issue with the Ethiopians themselves, I have no issues arming them and giving them some circles on a map where they can take care of business.
Obama has not changed the Bush policy of routing al qaeda out of where ever they may lie. Allies willing to use their own boots to do it, should be a boon to us.

It’s ridiculous to suddenly want to do something about this after ignoring all the other shit that’s been going on in Africa over the years. And all the hashtag warriors have forgotten about Kony. The guy’s still on the loose killing, looting, raping and kidnapping. How quickly we forget.
It is ridiculous that we have ignored the situation in Africa for as long as we have. The crimes against humanity there have been unspeakably evil for too long. Only now, these what were more or less isolated militias garnering for power over their perspective local regions are aligning themselves with terrorists, becoming better armed and trained and emboldened to go after bigger targets.
The African situation was not going to be ignored forever. Eventually, it was going to require our information.

Thankfully and contrary to public rhetoric, American foreign policy is not dictated by morality, but by political realism.

No taxpayer money. No government involvement aka USA - World Police. No Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force sacrificing their lives for cultures that really don’t give a shit.
Turn private industry loose.
It could happen.
I like it.
Kinda like The Expendables.
Just but a $50 million bounty on the leaders severed heads and the return of the girls. See what happens.
They can even make an “Expendables” accounts through the UN or the World Bank and all the normal/western/decent nations can make contributions for mercenary activity.
Guns for hire that are loyal only to their next paycheck? Sounds like a sound and responsible way to achieve foreign policy objectives.

Lol can anyone outspend the arabs? Mercenaries are not a viable option in a war on terrorism, maybe conventional warfare but not terrorism
This begs the question, where the hell do you buy mercenaries?
And if it were that easy, wouldn’t rich lobbyists over here just pay to kill people instead of influencing elections through campaign finances?Seems cheaper, I’m surprised our political system isn’t more violently corrupt rather than surreptitiously corrupt.

Mercenaries seems like a can of woop ass that even politicians are hesitant to open, because it seems they would just be opening it on themselves.
Not a far leap from personal security forces though, which have grown very popular in the last decade. Maybe next decade we’ll see the rise of personal offensive forces- aside from the ones that cartels have/keep.

Oh? Quote a few can. Mercenaries are an undesirable force for nearly every spectrum of warfare in the 21st century.

It’s being reported that the Nigerian government kidnapped family members of Boku Haram in the past, and the current kidnapping is claimed to be retaliation. Not trying to make any excuses for Boko Haram, they are obviously insane, but maybe the Nigerian government isn’t worth defending, either.
Nigeria’s government also turned down our offer to help, originally. And they originally claimed that all the girls had been released and were safe.
Had a friend who was in rural Nigeria for a bit. He said that the police there rent out their guns to local criminals at night to make a little extra cash. Yikes! I says that before we send in anyone to do anything we should make clear that saving those girls is a moral position only. The question then becomes how much bungling on out part is acceptable in a country that will probably sabotage us at every stage? How many local officials do we bribe? How many shipments of aid to help the girls are acceptable to go missing? Africans think of aid as a spoils system and as long as we are committed to helping as a moral position they’ll treat us like ATMs.
Read this. It will tell you a lot about why we should really never go near Africa, especially if we are trying to “help” them.

It wasn’t a foreign policy objective. It was an idea about how to rescue some Nigerian girls without spending taxpayers money, limbs and lives.
It was about subcontracting World Policing.
