KONY 2012

Okay, so for those of you who haven’t seen it, here it is.

Here’s my problem with this whole movement (begin rant) - this isn’t any of our business. Yes, what this guy’s doing is disgusting and should be stopped ASAP, but I think we have bigger fish to fry, such as the $15.5 trillion debt, the war on terrorism, and trying to stop the violence in our own cities. And for Obama to have sent U.S. troops over there is just ridiculous. I know that they’re not directly involved in military action, but the fact that he’s dipping his hands into this is a recipe for disaster. If these people are trying to push Obama to send troops over to Uganda and to actually intervene, then they’re all fucking retards. I can also guarantee that there will be at least one idiot who sees “KONY 2012” and thinks he’s running for president of the United States.

Another problem I have - why is everybody getting so worked up about this just now? If it’s been going on for 20+ years, then why hasn’t anybody spoken up about it? I see all my friends on Facebook and twitter post something about and act like they give a shit about it, when in reality, a week from now, they’re not going to even remember. Making a Facebook status about it or tweeting about it won’t do shit to get him out of power. Yes, more people will know about it, but that doesn’t help as much as the necessary amount of time, money, and action will. Everybody’s doing it because it’s been mainstreamed on the social media outlets and not because that they genuinely care about doing something. If you actually cared, then you wouldn’t be on your ass behind a keyboard - you’d be out there spreading awareness by foot, going to rallies or meetings, and trying to spread the word through posters, stickers, and other things of that sort.

/rant.

If I see one more goddamn FB kony 2012 status I’m going to freak the fuck out.

Wouldn’t just killing him ourselves be cheaper?

OP, was that a troll post?

If not, that has got to be one of the most idiotic things I have ever read on T-Nation.

I am absolutely speechless here. I’m going to go ahead and leave this thread right now, and pray that people with your viewpoint are in the minority.

You’re definitely one of the people that posted a Facebook status and think you’re a political activist now, don’t you?

Not entirely sure. I wouldn’t know how much it would cost, but I know it wouldn’t be cheap. Maybe someone with some military background could chime in.

I can’t speak for PimpBot, but here are my thoughts…

The whole attitude of “it’s not happening here so it isn’t our problem” needs to go. It is happening over here, meaning we all share this Earth and any wrong shouldn’t be okay no matter how much ocean is between us. Look, I sure don’t want to be the police for the world, but to turn a blind eye to this is crazy. The dude is snatching children up and making them kill their parents, disfigure other people, and fight for a guy hell bent on power. You were born here in America and don’t have to deal with any of the stuff these kids are facing, but for sheer luck of the roll of a dice. You could just as easily have been dealt that lot in life and I would bet you would hope someone would help your plight. Everyone should shut this shit down. If the whole world would come together and shine a light on the evils going on this would be a wonderful world to live in. Evil is winning more and more, it is great that people are shedding light on this, this is a real cause unlike most of the shit we stick our nose in.

The video did make a great point, our gov will never help these people since there is no incentive, which is crazy and shows how backwards this planet has become.

(Not attacking you CS, just giving my thoughts)

lol well in that case I’ll chime in. Yes and no, depends on how you want to do it. IMO if you want to tip toe around it then do what the US is currently doing. Also IMO the job will probably get done pretty quick (ramp up the operation with a few hundred more troops chompin at the bit to get this guy) and it will be on the back pages of the news. It doesn’t take a bunch of college kids to open the eyes of a bunch of policy makers and politicians. This guy has been known about for awhile. There is a priority list though, and I know that list says he’s number one…

To say that hey this is none of our business though…ahh fuck it who cares if a bunch of dark and skinny’s across the Atlantic get burnt is pretty weak. Respect for human life is part of what makes America great.

When you’re worried about the cost to do the right thing then there is a bigger problem with who’s making the decisions.

People will remember the actions we take as country for the greater good.

“Evil prevails when good men do nothing.” who said that?

Understood. So, should it be a U.S. acting alone type of thing, or a joint effort between a few different nations?

Is there a bounty on this dudes head?

Typically where the tip of the spear. Why should it be any different this time? I don’t have a problem with it. I understand the whole argument of “bigger fish to fry,” but this is a situation that we can handle relatively easy with out interfering with all of our other problems.

I mean come the fuck on we’re America for fucks sake, you’re telling me we can’t walk and chew bubble gum at the same time?

Politicians are working on it.

Here’s an interesting article on the subject. Kinda damning of the organization itself and points out how the situation is a lot more complicated than all the kids posting the video on Facebook now so they can feel like activists think it is:

Interesting indeed.

Addressing the issue of supporting direct military action. Can you really go in and have peace discussions with somebody that only wants to hang on to there power. If he just gives up his power, he’s dead. (tribunal)

He’s evil. Kill him? Replace him with another evil?

Yeah probably unless we go in and install a leader and government. We can help but we can’t do all the work. Think Iraq, we ousted that despot and now we’re assisting in the rebuilding process. At some point the people have to take accountability and seize the opportunity to build a nation that can contribute to the world. Africa in general is a pretty screwed up continent…a lot of work to be done there.

White man’s burden? WTF!? Get off that bullshit.

“Still, Konyâ??s a bad guy, and heâ??s been around a while. Which is why the US has been involved in stopping him for years. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has sent multiple missions to capture or kill Kony over the years. And theyâ??ve failed time and time again, each provoking a ferocious response and increased retaliative slaughter. The issue with taking out a man who uses a child army is that his bodyguards are children. Any effort to capture or kill him will almost certainly result in many childrenâ??s deaths, an impact that needs to be minimized as much as possible. Each attempt brings more retaliation. And yet Invisible Children supports military intervention. Kony has been involved in peace talks in the past, which have fallen through. But Invisible Children is now focusing on military intervention.”

So we should just let him keep letting him bro out with his homey’s cause statistically it’s not quite as bad as when we go in? IMO think long run. AFRICOM hasn’t done as much as the article would like you to believe. Infact rules of engagement are extremely strict…to the point of not allowing American soldiers to carry weapons…yeah real cool.

If my post comes across a little sarcastic it’s cause I just mixed up a bunch of Bourbon with some bitters…oops.

Any who there is a lot of work to be done and Uganda certainly isn’t the only country on that continent in need of help.

I support this.

And we can argue about whether or not we shoulda gone into Iraq in the first place. I’m not a non-interventionist, but we need to look at risk vs return. Every time we talk about going in an ousting someone and then helping with rebuilding, it worries me. It doesn’t always work out, at least not in our favor. Iraq is a good example of this. If we ever completely leave, we don’t know what’s going to happen there in the long run. It could be another Iran. Say we take out Kony, someone worse could easily take his place. I’m not saying that that is a reason to not act, but it’s a reason to get as much information as possible before making that decision, obviously.

[quote]gonepostal wrote:

Yeah, this part made me go, “Huh?”

[quote]gonepostal wrote:

Possibly, if the possible replacement could create a worse situation. Plus, on the possibly having to hurt children in the act argument, I think the article’s main point with that, and one I want most the people I know who are posting the video to take away from it, is that it wont be a simple little mission. If we could even get him, some, if not a lot of children will be killed. While I understand that this may have to be the case if we determine killing him would be the best possible situation, I really don’t think, based on the postings I’ve seen on Facebook, that a lot of people understand that. And let’s just say we could get him without killing anyone else, there will almost definitely be retaliation. How bad will it be? It could create a much worse situation.

[quote]gonepostal wrote:

Yeah, that’s bullshit right there.

[quote]gonepostal wrote:

That raises another major question. Where does it end? We have tons of things going on in the Middle East. Keeping an eye on North Korea. Are we really going to go into Africa? How do we pick what countries to help? We can’t help them all. We can’t afford to. Even if we just played the role of going in there and doing some training, that could majorly backfire too (Osama Bin Ladden).

The main reason I like this article is that while I think this needs attention drawn to it, and it’s good that there’s more dialogue taking place than there has been in years past, I don’t think a lot of people who are posting the video and crying about how badly something needs to get done recognize the complexity of the issue.
