Do you guys get NFL games over there? I know the NFL had the Giants and Dolphins play there this past season (it was a treat, you saw my boys, the champs!) and will continue to do so.
And yeah, soccer is CRAZY around the world. It’s a shame that it’s not picked up over here. I thoroughly enjoy it, watching, spectating, and playing. I suck at it, but it’s fun all around nevertheless.
What is collegiate athletics like over in your country?
I’m a Giants fan as well, started following the game a few seasons ago. When we were quite poor lol
Skysports- our big cable tv station, show all sports, and they screen 2 live NFL games on a Sunday during the season.
And any other games that might be on, Monday nights, thursdays, thanksgiving etc.
College sports are non-existent really.
These days when you leave school in England, you get took on by an employer- and they train you up. Customer service, or a construction trade…
And the ones that do go college, will stay for 2-4 years. With some going into even higher education, and the rest getting jobs.
For example, I will be doing sports performance and excellence, starting in september. The college has no sports teams though- and this is the norm for colleges in england.
If you wanna play- you do it in your own time, train during the week, and play on a weekend. For a local team, with friends.
I wish the college sport was like it is over there.

If you have a team near you it’s easy to catch all the games your team plays. But with regards to national coverage, once a week in the regular season NBC usually has a weekend game on at 2pm on Saturday I believe, sometimes Sunday games, Versus also carries the occasional game - right after they are done with bass fishing or hunting that is.
I see more of the CFL on t.v. than I do NHL games that don’t have my home team playing.
Ah man, I can’t fathom a lack of collegiate athletics here in America. It’s such a huge basis of revenue for our schools and economy, it’s pretty much NECESSARY to have athletic teams at a college.
And does everyone get SkySports, or do you have to pay extra for it? Here in America, we pay extra for International sports channels and even league-based channels, like the NFL Network.

There are a lot of colleges in england, with none of them been particularly big. Things are a lot different in terms of the way college sports are.
We recently got rid of skysports in my house, we’ll get it back in september for the NFL season. But at the moment my mum can’t afford it, so we’ll do without.
So I just watch the soccer games on the internet, or go the pub when soccer’s on skysports.
In england you have 5 basic channels, and then if you have extra packages, sports, movies etc- it can cost a bomb.

You guys obviously can’t be happy about the lack of coverage the game has. Did it just get this bad after the strike, what was it like before the strike?
I hate to say it, but I don’t think my Sharks have anything left in the tank. Their performance last night was pathetic. Oh wait, maybe that was their junior league team that showed up. My old UVM team could have whipped them last night. I am still on their side for tomorrow, but I aint holding my breath.

It was bad before the strike. Unfortunately, when the strike happened, no one even cared. ESPN barely covered the strike or made mention of it. It was a bad time for hockey. After the strike, it got slightly better in the North, but here in Florida, nothing. Sure, fans went to games, but not nearly as much as pre-strike.
And about your other post, aight. Man, things are WAY different in England. At least here in America our cable comes with like ~70 decent channels on the basic package.

What are attendences like, and do you go many games yourself?
We get quite a few channels on the basic package, but a lot of crap lol.
They put the movies and sports together, so if you think I really wanna watch sport, so I’ll keep that, and save money getting rid of the movies. But then they tie in the movies with that, to try to make you stay.
About the picture: first shot of the game, first goal of the game.
tomrowe wrote:

I know attendances in the North are much greater than in the South. I used to go to games a lot before I left for college. I lived in the Tampa Bay region of Florida, so I’d go to Lightning games a lot, especially when the Canadiens would come to play. I actually made it to a game with my cousin and brother this past February. It was awesome, to say the least.

Yeah, we get that here too. On the basic channels, some networks share a station, it’s kinda funny. One hour it’s CNBC (stocks and money), the next, you get VH1.
For those who didn’t watch (or couldn’t…international), Michael Wilbon of PTI (on ESPN) predicted the Canadiens over the Bruins tonight. I sure hope so!

It really hasn’t changed at all due to the strike, at least from what I have noticed. ESPN does not cover it, therefore it is not worth watching. ESPN is the sports network in America, and to most what they decide to cover is what their viewers know about the sports being played. If you see any NHL on ESPN, it’s almost always on the Top 10 Plays of the day segment. It may also warrant a mention of the status of a playoff series a few times a week (usually after showing a play that made the Top 10, they’ll mention the series is tied at 2-2 and move on).
I can’t really complain all that much because I pick up CBC, since I live about 15 minutes from the Canadian border. They cover hockey, badly, but at least it’s televised. Don Cherry’s clothes still worry me, as does his bias towards the Canadian teams playing if it’s against an American team (he only will do his “coach’s corner” segment if theres a Canadian team playing. He roots vehemently against all the American teams and talks almost exclusively about the Canadian team involved in the game.) Not all that surprising, given it is Hockey Night in Canada, but I do find it rather annoying.

Varies throughout the country, I can’t imagine TB gets anywhere near the # of people in the stands as Calgray. In Buffalo the Sabres sold out every home game of the past 2 seasons (maybe 1 or 2 not quite sell outs this year, but we sucked this year). Tickers are near impossible to find for a reasonable price, last game I went to cost me $250 for 2 tickets.
Audience capacity isn’t near the NFL size, Buffalo’s NFL stadium is just under 74,000 seats. Our hockey arena seats 18,690 (I’m almost embarrassed I knew that without looking it up).
But seriously, congrats Bruins. You played real well throughout the whole series.
[What I’m about to say may anger some of you]
However, this just goes to show that Montreal was better. Even though the refs were biased toward Boston, Montreal came through. When it mattered most, we nutted up and won.

die in a fire. And I swear to god, if I see a habs jersey or hear “nah nah nah nah hey hey hey good bye” in the next few days, someone’s going to get punched in the face. Repeatedly
also seriously, congratulations habs and habs fans. Your boys really sacked up at the end and played well.

I honestly still disagree, I really think Boston was just as good a team as montreal and we could have very easily won game 2 or game 4 just 1 different bounce or one better call (FU!#@$ GOD D##$ SH#$ MOTHER FU@%$). The only difference in game 7 was my B’s played the Habs’ game. They didn’t hit, they didn’t push the transition, they didn’t commit 2 men to the forecheck, etc… We had trouble all series dealing with Montreal in their defensive posture and it showed tonight.
And regarding your statement about the refs, that’s just fucking ignorant. Goal 3 tonight, the holding call against Chara, find that hold on camera and show it to me. It was an absolute bullshit call and that goal sealed it for the Habs. And it wasn’t the first. Look back to the penalty which allowed the overtime goal in game 2. Utter shite! Overall, I thought the refereeing was actually pretty good (for the “new” nhl) in all but Bill McCreary is an idiot, and Leggo’s call was bull (not to mention the linesman completely ignoring Plekanic’s skate in the face off.)

Since the Boston fans didn’t rub it in after games 5 & 6, I’ll return the favour.
Good series. Boston will be a good team next year.
How magnanimous of you!! cunt
no, just kidding, thank you and congrats to your habs, good luck in the rest of the playoffs, they played some pretty great hockey and that series, disregarding games 1 and 7, was some of the most enjoyable I’ve watched in years.

Well, that interference call in the…1st Period?..was horrible too. I think it’s safe to say that the refs in this series just plain sucked. I watched it streamed online on CBC, and some crazy pro-Boston Canadien dude was saying that the refs didn’t let the players play. I agree wholeheartedly. It’s the playoffs, let the players decide the games.
