NHL Combine (Bench Press) Numbers

it would be funny if the site were about basketball and a reporter was bragging that a hot shot really ripped it up by sinking 11% of his freethrows.

…you really dont see the difference between a basketball player not shooting freethrows well and a hockey player not benching much?

Your comparison is laughable. Now, maybe if it was a site about basketball and sumo wrestlers were judged based on how many freethrows they made… that would be a usable comparison. Because sumo wrestlers should be expected to make a lot of freethrows because they arent basketball players, and having the skill of making freethrows wont help them reach their sumo wrestling goals. Yes, their numbers will be laughable compared to people who practice shooting freethrows.

Anyway, ever read this:

It?s home to bodybuilders, powerlifters, Mixed Martial Artists, and in fact, athletes of any kind who stand to benefit from increased size, increased strength, increased power, or increased endurance.

So apparently this isnt just a site about strength, its about other things too. Including endurance. And skill. And agility. Etc. Etc.

You keep chanting “150 for 11 reps is weak!!”… yet have no response when I’ve asked you, directly, why a hockey player should care if he has a weak bench.

Total ownage. I’ve found that CappedAndPlanIt thinks this site is more of a debating society. I honestly don’t even think he lifts seriously.

I read the first and last page of this thread. It’s one of the more amusing ones. So far I’ve learned that a lot of guys think a) hockey players are cool and b) 150 pounds is a lot of weight to lift for reps.

No one is offended by you saying the weights are small. We all know that. But when you say stuff like “hockey is still gay” you’re going to piss people off.
Why? This seriously makes no sense to me. I am not a hockey fan but am an MMA fan. If people said, “MMA is gay and any MMA homo who can’t bench press 400 lbs. is gay,” I honestly wouldn’t care. And why should I?

Why do people get “pissed” when someone insults their favorite sports? This truly makes no sense to me.

I came back to this thread after a long time thinking it was dead…

I was wrong

Ok, so all bitching about how tough it is or not…lets get to the point:

HOW THE FUCK DOES ONES PERFORMANCE ON THE BENCH PRESS EQUATE TO BEING ATHLETIC?

Very little.

Bench pressing at around 3:45, I guess one of the best performances of the day at 10 reps…

How much would Gretzky bench when he was 17?
They are skinny high school kids. Who cares what they bench?

I am sure that in 5 years if and when they make the NHL they will be significantly stronger.

And be making way more money than all the big benchers in this thread.

I agree that those numbers are pretty bad for athletes trying out for a pro league like the NHL. On the other hand, I grew up playing hockey for 10 years, I’m not bad at it, but I’m not that great either.

Unless you actually played a game of hockey you’d realize that endurance and leg strength are really important (Obviously skill with the puck and skating is first). I have a few friends who got drafted in the WHL and to universities as well.

I would say on average they would be around 6’0"-6’2" and about 170-210lbs. Regardless of what they lifted in the weightroom, they were just really strong guys when it came to using their bodyweight for making hits on the ice or throwing someone on their ass during a fight. From junior high to high school it was common knowledge not to ever fight with the hockey player.

i don’t know. but it is interesting that the hockey fans have their panties in a wad.

i’m also not sure how laughing about such weak weight and off the mark reporter comments, which is the point of the thread isn’t or how the point became how important the bench press is or isn’t to the game.

150 lbs for 11 reps is weak. and funny when considered to be really ripping it up. hockey or no hockey.

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king. What’s so amazing about that?

Oh, ok, I get it now. Sorry, I was so confused.

Here I thought it was understood that athletes would be striving for increased size/strength/power/endurance/speed/agility/etc specific to their sport.

But now I see the light. Its all about laying down on your back and pushing a bar towards the ceiling.

Thanks for enlightening me, texasguy.

Texas you said you wrestled in high school…

Well I’m a wrestler up here in Wisconsin and we just got done doing a combine measuring different athletes in all kinds of sports. Two state champ wrestlers and 8 state qualifying wrestlers that tested barely maxed their body weight or just above that. Take into account the fact that this occured in Wisconsin, one of the big three states as far as high school wrestling goes in the country.

On the other hand, I maxed out way above my body weight and I did shit this year in wrestling. You make the arguement that wrestling is such a tough sport, and while I’m with you in some regards, I do not believe that the premiere athletes in the sport are putting up the kind of numbers you would like to argue.

Strength has some importance, but you can’t make the arguement that certain sports are tougher than other sports based on the kind of weights the athletes are moving around.

Calling texas guy.

You quoted the front page on this site, pointing out that this site is a strength training site basically.

ok.

so whattaya bench?

squat?

dead?

how big are the guns? I dont want to give you as much attention as many of the other people on this site do until I see some pics, and some video clips of your amazing feats of strength.

Why you? Because you are talking alot of smack but I think its time for you to walk the walk.

I’m sick of reading and reading about your fucking opinions of what is tough, throw up a video of your bench so your words will be more weighted and deserving of attention.

From what i have read from this thread all i gather from you is that your just some random dude with a stupid picture in your avator.

Go on, I know you have a good camera to because you can afford these things seein as your a rich boy as you “oh so modestly” pointed out on rainjack’s thread. And i know you can film yourself with no shame seeing as you train very early in the morning and not many people are in the gym.

In your animal stak thread you made a cycle log. A CYCLE LOG! on animal stak 2? are you serious?

wow.

to me, 160 pounds for 10 reps is decent for a 17 year old newb that deosnt care about strength like people on this site.

speak the truth. dont try and get people to admire you on the internet because you laugh at a certain weight. youl find that many of the real strong guys dont say shit about other people’s lifts, because they know the real deal.

prove yourself worthy to talk the talk.

or shut the fuck up and go back to bb.com.

Irish why haven’t you called me back? I loved the coffee we had last night…

anyway back to topic…who gives a fuck? Honestly? They don’t bench, hence the subpar numbers, is it in their best interest? Fuck no, but these guys don’t need to bench to be strong, it’s only one exercise out of thousands to measure strength by. Jesus
