NFL Combine Verticals

Well keep on believing that then.

For Shawn Marion, I can see two dunks here where his head is possibly at rim level and this is off the run.

Ben Wallace, I’m not sure if his head ever reaches rim level in any of these.

Here is another one with Ben Wallace and Dominique Wilkens. There’s a few where you can see Dominique’s head maybe hitting 10’2" or 10’3", of course he’s one of the best jumpers in the history of the NBA.

Same thing for KG. Also remember that KG is 6’11". Him hitting his head on the rim from a standstill would be a 37" vert. There is one dunk in the clip reel (which is not great) where it looks like his head is about at rim level, so even saying he can get his head to 10’4" jumping his highest from the run, that’s 41" from the run, which probably translates to about a 35" vert from standing.

Here is Amare Stoudamire

He is definitly one of the most explosive jumpers, a lot of these clips are of him in traffic, but you can see of the few where he really has time to gather that his head is legit at rim height. Of course he is also 6’10", so even if he can hit his head on the rim from the stand (which I’d say MIGHT be a possibility), that is a 38" vert.

I just threw that one in there because it’s fucking cool as shit. Early on there is one of Lebron throwing one down on a breakaway where his head is definitly at or over rim height. Legit 40" vert for sure!

I love basketball and dunking as much or more than anybody I know, but people need to realize that basketball is a sport with physiological demands that are just not that condusive to incredible straight up vertical leaps. The shorter, more muscular guys (Nate Robinson, Steve Francis, etc). J.R. Smith also has an incredible vert. It was reported as 44" by a draft report that I was reading that I think was pretty accurate. He was the only one listed as over 40" in that report so it might be accurate. In any case, a TRUE 40" vert is jaw-dropping. I have a 33" vert and at 6’4" I can slam the ball hard without a step.
