No way shape or form Johnny football makes the NFL game
He has a better arm and is more athletic than Geno Smith, EJ Manuel, Cam Newton, Brandon Weeden, Josh Smith, Blain Gabbert… I could go on.
With the way the league is now, it’s designed for a guy like him. He just needs a coach who can reign him in a little bit.
The kid will definitely get a shot in the league.
No. Just dont see it
and who in that group has won a SB?
Until a “mobile” running QB wins the SB I just dont see it.
I guess you must have missed the Super Bowls that Steve Young and Brett Favre won.
Steve Young was mobile yes, BUT he only developed after his better Montana showed him how to work in the pocket.
Favre really?
Dont be difficult DB you know as well as I that both Young and Favre were pass first and scramble QB’s. The new wave of QB is a read option running QB and until they win a SB I will not have faith in them.
I’m not exactly an NFL expert, but the Favre comment had me scratching my head as well.
Well, when Derek said “mobile” I assumed he meant “mobile”. Young was mobile and he won a Super Bowl. Although he didn’t really blossom until he got better from the pocket, he was still a pretty frequent scrambler back then. The 49ers used designed runs all the time to get Young out of the pocket and on the run, even the year they won the Super Bowl with him. They especially used a lot of naked bootlegs. Anyone who thinks that Young had abandoned his running ability by the time he won a ring as a starter simply didn’t watch him play back then.
I laugh at the assertion that Montana taught Young how to operate in the pocket. Montana wasn’t teaching Young shit when they played together. Montana was beyond competitive and never did anything to help Young develop as a QB. Young was brought in to replace Montana back in 1987 when Montana was coming back from a pair of bad injuries and Walsh thought he might be done. Besides, by the time Young really established himself as a great passer, Montana was already in KC.
Montana was also an extremely mobile QB who operated as well outside of the pocket as he did in it. Shit, even the most famous play he was ever involved in, The Catch, was a called rollout designed to get him out of the pocket and moving with the ball. Honestly, I can’t even believe I didn’t originally put him in my list. He was more mobile than Favre and ran all the time even when they were winning titles. He ran for a touchdown in the 1981 Super Bowl and he ran for 20 touchdowns in his career.
Brett Favre was another extremely mobile QB who operated quite well and quite frequently out of the pocket. I’ve only seen him fuck the Niners in the ass in the playoffs about 54 times on plays where he used his mobility to get outside of the pocket and make plays with his arm OR his legs. The guy could flat out run with the ball, but he wasn’t a “running” QB. But that doesn’t matter because Derek said “mobile”, not run-first.
The bottom line is that Montana, Favre and Young are three perfect examples of QBs who were anything but strictly pocket passers who won Super Bowls. Aaron Rodgers is another extremely mobile QB who makes a lot of plays with his arm and his legs outside of the pocket and who has a ring.
I’m sorry, but if you think there aren’t any extremely mobile QBs with rings who made a ton of plays outside of the pocket, then you simply haven’t watched enough football.
