Well, Alex Smith will never see the field as a starter again, barring injury. I don’t even know how to explain it really, but Kaepernick just doesn’t look or carry himself like a player with as little experience as he has. He looks like he’s been doing this in the NFL for several years now. You typically see moments of confusion from the quarterback throughout the game when he hasn’t made more than a couple starts in the NFL. Not from Kaepernick though. He also looks like he’s really cleaned up his throwing motion since last year.
Kaepernick has played 2 games. He looks great, no doubt, but 2 games don’t mean shit. Can he win without his best stuff? Can he win when half his o-line is injured? Can he grind out wins?
The league is QB starved, I wouldn’t count out Smith as a starter just yet. This draft class isn’t as QB rich as the last one.
Not many QBs can win with an injured offensive line. If it weren’t for Akers’ bum leg he would have ground out a win against St. Louis a couple weeks ago.
Besides, are you and I watching the same player? In his only two starts he’s already shown he’s much more capable and dangerous than Smith ever was. We know what Smith will do every week. Essentially, Smith’s ceiling is Kaepernick’s floor. He just DID win without his best stuff anyways. If you think what he’s featured so far is his best stuff then you’re delusional.
I said he looked great, but it’s only 2 games.
Some QB’s start strong, look amazing and then become human. Others grow over a few years and become great. Cam looked like the most amazing QB that ever played last year. This year, he looks human. Of course, his team sucks and the niners are loaded with talent. But I’ll reserve judgement until I have seen him challenged. I respect Smith because he had to work for it with people downing him constantly. What he lacks in talent he made up with hard work and brains.
The difference between Kaepernick and Newton is in their mental makeup and work ethic, and it’s why I think Kaepernick will maintain his success and Newton has not. Newton isn’t a hard worker or a smart guy, really. He got caught cheating multiple times at Florida, which tells me he isn’t a hard worker in the classroom nor is he smart enough to get away with it. He also was caught stealing shit, which tells me he isn’t much of a leader at all either. His Wonderlic score was 21, which is below average for a QB.
Kaepernick’s was 37. I just Googled his GPA while at UNR and it was a 3.9. He’s already shown he’s smart enough to command the most complicated offense in the NFL.
The point is that Kaepernick is a bright guy who has a great work ethic by all accounts. His physical talent and potential is arguably higher than even RG3, given his much larger size. The only question about Kaepernick was about his throwing motion. It’s still a bit elongated, but it’s much, much better than it was in college. He also has a coach who has shown he can coach up a QB as well as anyone in the league in years.
So, yes, he may regress and could even be a complete flash in the pan. But the guy really does have everything you would want in a QB, more so than a guy like Newton or any other guy who has flamed out after a quick start. Kaepernick has all the physical tools that Smith doesn’t have, and he has all the brains and hard work as well. I know I’m biased and all that, but even from a purely objective standpoint, there really isn’t anything NOT to like about Kaepernick. He has all the tools and all the right things around him to sustain his success for a long, long time.
He may be the best thing since sliced bread, or he may have been a little lucky. Only time will tell. I don’t deny his obvious talent, but he will have problems, he will slump, and then we’ll see how great he is.
Handling a major injury is another element. Tom Brady is the example of a successful post major injury career, Carson Palmer is the opposite.
Good Lord Pat you’re a smart sonofabitch.
