NFL 2011 Offseason

Not buying, not for a second. I remember when Alex Smith got drafted he physically lacked the skill set to be a competent NFL quarterback because his hands simply weren’t big enough. This has continued to be an issue all these years.

And I never got that mentality. Where someone is TERRIBLE for the last 4-5 years, but wait! This 6th year he’s just going “to get it.” No, it just doesn’t work like that. The truly great QBs basically get it right from the get-go (for the most part,) let’s be honest.

If Alex Smith hasn’t figured it out yet, there’s no hope for him. He’s going to end up being a journeyman back-up QB for the rest of his career after this year, seeing as how Harbaugh is probably waiting out for Andrew Luck.

WC what real options does he have also? If the CBA does not get done then no trades, there really is not a QB in the draft that blows my skirt up. I would probably make the same choice. Did Alex Smith really lose games for 49rs last year? I dont know didnt watch that many.
You both make valid point and I don’t disagree. He’s also had a ton of turmoil surrounding him in regards to his head coaches and offensive coordinators.

If we keep him and Harbaugh turns him into a diamond, more power to him. I guess right now I just associate Smith with loosing seasons, injuries, and a lot of money down the drain.

Honestly, I’d really like to see Harbaugh trade for a young QB whose been sitting for a year or two already in the NFL, and Josh Johnson is at the top of my list in regards to that.

SSC honest question, if Rogers would NOT have sat behind Favre and learned and became a elite QB and had been drafted by 49rs where would he be?

QB is the hardest position and yes there are elite QB’s that can step right in and produce. However there are also plenty of examples of QB’s that sat behind great QB’s and then became elite themselves. Steve Young, Rogers, and McNair are just a few that come to mind.

I still think for that position it is about the total situation, coach, system and talent around them.

Haha, I was wondering if that was going to come up, I was going to elaborate on that a bit. It’s tough to say what would have happened with Aaron Rodgers, really. Hypothetically anything could have happened, so I’m not sure if I want to start playing that game.

I guess Alex Smith has had to play within a few different systems, which of course sucks, so maybe he deserves another shot. I’m generally a run-first kind of guy, but I can recognize the fact that a QB really is probably the most important position on the field, as much as I hate to admit it. I don’t really like teams that ‘settle’ with QBs - just because they can. It’s been my observation more times that not (and this goes for people who started right off the bat and sat initially) that you’ll probably know how good a player is within their first 16 games played.

I don’t know, it’s tough for me to type out all my thoughts about the issue. Like I alluded to before… if Alex Smith doesn’t work out this year, they could have a chance with Luck next year!

A little off topic…but DJ’s comment right here is a perfect example of Eli Manning’s season. On the surface he had a shit season with a tons of interceptions. if you dig deeper you realize the extreme amount of injuries the giants WR corp sustained…plus how EXTREMELY complicated the giants offense is (Gilbride is known for this) couple that with trash heap receivers (hagan, jenkins) Eli Manninhe actually had a very good year all things considered.

I have heard that from some experts however they do say the Eli’s other ball safety really degraded this year. Two hands on the ball out of the pocket and some of his choices on reads was a down year for him. Unfortunately Matty we both have our favorite teams in the biggest market in the NFL so our Qb’s will get the most shit for any little thing they do.

Yea we stole someone from GB, :stuck_out_tongue: SSC.

In regards to Eli, Plax will be ready to go… HA! You know he’s going to sign somewhere. If not the Giants or the Jets, than who?

Print you should now better, the RAIDERS.

eagles signed former cincy LB rashad jeanty… let the exodus begin?

looks like a solid player overall… apparently dolphins and jets had an offer on the table for him…

Good point. Though I know both the Jets & the Gints have spoken w/Rosenhous. The Jets must be thinking if they can’t keep Braylon that Plax might fit in cheaper.

I would say that still may happen, but WR is not our problem in Dallas. Maybe straight up trade Roy for James.

I would think he would want out of NY, but not like he will have much of a choice. Also after being out for a couple years how long will it take to get back into football shape? Look at Vick it took him a couple of years to get right again.

Steelers tagged LaMarr Woodley. Good, very good.

Timmons is next but that will have to wait another year, nothing but upside for that guy.

Somehow(not because of injury) Pittsburgh needs to see what Worilds can do at OLB, problem is how can a guy crack that starting line-up.

Steelnation: It sucked that Gibson was cut but I think it was to make room for Adams. Also good news that Kevin Butler is staying…fuck you Cardinals lol.
Agreed about Worilds. They need to start rotating pass rushers more often in the nickle package. Harrion’s best days are definitely behind him so they’re going to need a ROLB in the next 2-3 years.

I’m guessing Woodley will get signed a week after the new CBA is finalized. Franchising him was just a formality, since they can’t resign him right now.

I have my doubts that Timmons will be a Steeler after his rookie deal expires. I think the asking price is going to be too high. I’d hate to lose the guy, especially with Farrior being very close to retirement.

I think you mean Keith Butler. He’s going to stay in Pittsburgh because the DC job is his when Lebeau retires. If I were him I’d take the AZ job though. I don’t see Lebeau retiring any time soon and Butler isn’t getting any younger. Either he doesn’t have any head coaching aspirations or Lebeau has told him exactly when he’ll retire in a private conversation.

Gibson was waived in mid-season to make room for a DE (McClendon). It was a stupid move. They tried to be sneaky and it didn’t work. They could have waived Dwyer instead (or IRed Aaron Smith like they should have done all along) and lost absolutely nothing if he had been claimed. Instead they lost a promising young LB.

I’m still sour about that one.

Do you think it would take as long for him as Vick? I wouldn’t think so, only cuz all he has to do is run routes. & w/Plax is best route was the fade & the long ball. I think one training camp & he’s good. I read somewhere that he is prison yard shape. Now only spending time in local yocal jails I can’t confess what that is. Maybe Matty can chime in since he was in a state run facility… J/K Matty.

It may not take as long as Vick but he still has to get timing and such with a QB. Plax was never known as a hard worker either, so getting back in football shape may take a while. And I mean hard work as watching film etc.

Plus hopefully he learns to carry his gun in something besides a pair of sweats.

Ehh… no thanks. Lol. I got to say Roy Williams throw away a lot of games for Detroit. So overrated!

Matty, if you get a chance check out the special sportscenter did today on JJ Watts, he is a big strong and insanely FAST linemen, i think he is gonna be a damn monster. after the special i watched ~an hour of tape on him and he has amazing potential.
