Just read this and I don’t know what to think:
“I’m not going to hide my feelings” Harbaugh added. “I like Alex Smith, I like him as a football player, as a person and he’ll make the best decision for him. Some people say Alex Smith needs a fresh start or needs a new place to be or whatever. I say let that place be here.”
Not buying, not for a second. I remember when Alex Smith got drafted he physically lacked the skill set to be a competent NFL quarterback because his hands simply weren’t big enough. This has continued to be an issue all these years.
And I never got that mentality. Where someone is TERRIBLE for the last 4-5 years, but wait! This 6th year he’s just going “to get it.” No, it just doesn’t work like that. The truly great QBs basically get it right from the get-go (for the most part,) let’s be honest.
If Alex Smith hasn’t figured it out yet, there’s no hope for him. He’s going to end up being a journeyman back-up QB for the rest of his career after this year, seeing as how Harbaugh is probably waiting out for Andrew Luck.
SSC honest question, if Rogers would NOT have sat behind Favre and learned and became a elite QB and had been drafted by 49rs where would he be?
QB is the hardest position and yes there are elite QB’s that can step right in and produce. However there are also plenty of examples of QB’s that sat behind great QB’s and then became elite themselves. Steve Young, Rogers, and McNair are just a few that come to mind.
I still think for that position it is about the total situation, coach, system and talent around them.
Haha, I was wondering if that was going to come up, I was going to elaborate on that a bit. It’s tough to say what would have happened with Aaron Rodgers, really. Hypothetically anything could have happened, so I’m not sure if I want to start playing that game.
I guess Alex Smith has had to play within a few different systems, which of course sucks, so maybe he deserves another shot. I’m generally a run-first kind of guy, but I can recognize the fact that a QB really is probably the most important position on the field, as much as I hate to admit it. I don’t really like teams that ‘settle’ with QBs - just because they can. It’s been my observation more times that not (and this goes for people who started right off the bat and sat initially) that you’ll probably know how good a player is within their first 16 games played.
I don’t know, it’s tough for me to type out all my thoughts about the issue. Like I alluded to before… if Alex Smith doesn’t work out this year, they could have a chance with Luck next year!
