Interesting. I’d rather know up front if the people I’m around actually dislike me for an arbitrary reason then have to find out when the situation is dire.

But since you can’t read people’s hearts, you are forced to go with what you can glean. That’s just life, and it’s literally the only rational choice.
Furthermore, someone not ashamed of their horrible opinions–someone willing to declare them in the public square–is more likely to support making those opinions politically legitimate. You’re not going to get a spirited defense Batman’s vigilantism from Bruce Wayne.
