What the living hell was so Oscar worthy about that acting done in that movie? Almost anyone could have done a better job than that. He didn’t even have many speaking roles because THEY knew he couldn’t act…so your argument seems to be losing ground.
There was no Oscar worthy acting in Superman Returns. That’s why it wasn’t nominated for any acting awards. It was nominated for a visual effects award.
Gee…that’s the point. You can’t claim that they picked Routh over someone more developed because of his great acting. He is not a great or even a good actor…so the claim that they don’t pick big guys because they can’t act holds no water.
Gotcha, just misunderstood why the oscar’s were brought up. I’m not expecting this next Superman movie to be the greatest either. The studio is more worried about getting it out. Their licensing expires in 2012? I think. It’s only saving grace will probably be the Nolan brothers, and hopefully Snyder can do something good. Hopefully it’s not a washed out slow-motion fest.

How Superman looks today in comics.
Like I said, you would have to look like an NPC heavyweight to play Superman correctly. We Just settle for less.
What choice is there? I don’t know of too many guys who are NPC heavweight size that can act. Given the options, I’ll take a smaller guy who can act over someone who looks the part any day. I’m pretty sure most of the public would as well.
Yeah, that seems to be the same argument we always hear…that no NPC competitor on Earth can act well enough to match that bullshit performance by Routh in the last Superman movie.
I mean, really?
What the living hell was so Oscar worthy about that acting done in that movie? Almost anyone could have done a better job than that. He didn’t even have many speaking roles because THEY knew he couldn’t act…so your argument seems to be losing ground.
Because they picked a crappy actor the last time it means they should do the same again? If anything, I would think that would indicate a need to stress acting ability more.
Good acting is necessary for a good movie. Maybe there are some big guys who could act well enough, but to my knowledge, none of them have the resume to prove. I wouldn’t be taking a risk on a nobody if I was the producer of a big budget movie.

Yeah, there’s no real film behind it.
Neat thing is there are a few superhero ones like that.
Here’s one about Robin, which I’m not entirely sure how serious it is, with appearances by Superman, The Joker and Wonder Woman.
I saw Grayson a few years ago. I think it is meant to be a serious effort. If I remember correctly it came out before Batman Begins, so it’s intended as a backlash against Schumacher’s Batman.
Have you seen Tomorrow’s Memoir? It smacks the tights off Superman Returns and nails the essence of Superman even with zero budget.

The late Dennis Newman had the looks and the muscle for Superman.
The first time I laid eyes on Newman in a bodybuilding mag I thought “there’s one Superman-looking mutherfucker”…
I also thought that Steve Reeves would’ve been an excellent fit for Supes in the early TV serials.
At his peak he was bigger than that…but yeah, he is pretty much the way a “real Superman” would look if you based it off of the comics over the years.
Hollywood has turned that into “find the cutest guy that the female casting director would like to sleep with”.
Or the male casting director.
Either way, what you say is true. The ability of casting directors to actually cast is a whole other discussion. I was thinking specifically of Steve Reeves as an alternative to George Reeves (before Superman hit his physical peak in the comics). Steve Reeves was successful enough, was a good enough actor had the look and had the build, but was never considered.
George was 12 years older than Steve, but George was already middle-aged by the time he was cast. Steve Reeves would’ve been perfect for the time.

I liked “Knowing” also…it came out in April last year I think, or March, so it may sound weird, but when I go see a movie on a rainy Friday afternoon in March I don’t analyze it too much.
It’s nice to have some popcorn and a coke and it wasn’t a big night out or anything. Only about $8 a ticket here in Taiwan too.
I enjoyed Knowing too. Cage was restrained, and didn’t pretend he was the second coming of Elvis. Which is good.
Spoilers:
The disaster scenes were epic…one of the best applications of CGI I’ve seen in years. Especially the plane crash. But the ‘tree of life’ epilogue was too heavy-handed after the alien plot. Seemed like they were trying too hard to serve two masters.
Knowing was good. George Reeves makes me cringe everytime I see him, Superman Returns is the first Supes flick I ever fell asleep on, and in recognition of Black History Month, I say we change the game up and make Superman BLACK! I nominate myself to play the lead…let’s face it…I am Superman on a daily basis, so it’d only make sense.
It looks like Ursa is going to be one of the main villians. So supes will be slappin some bitchez around this time around, I don’t recall him touching her in Superman II.

^ Good question, that is why I quoted from the article. We must be straight up missing link if this guy is macho.
I figured I was judging by how soft everyone else is getting.
I am judging because I grew up with Hollywood hero’s as Arnold, Clint and Bronson. Now it’s hairless men in skinny jeans with lean body mass of an anorexic ballerina.
Yo. I can’t help my genetics that I’ve got no body hair and chicken legs!
I’m going to post this again here because it’s worth repeating…
"We’ve talked about Superman’s build a lot, but not much has been said of Clark Kent: look at the comic closely and the cartoons. Look at the cut and fit of Kent’s suits: they disguise his build instead of enhancing it. He doesn’t shrink between identities. Look at his posture.
He’s not a catwalk model who needs to stay slim to fit into a suit. He gets the suits made to make him appear like he fits into them normally. There are always clues in comics and cartoons. They shouldn’t be ignored. "
