I do the gutterals in my tech death band so I guess I suck haha.
Maybe you could explain what the idea behind that vocal “style” is?
I think it sounds, well, retarded. There’s a lot of pretty good music I simply can’t listen too because those vocals annoy me to no end.
My theory is that a lot of people who fancy themselves metal “singers” have the musical ability of your average American Idol contestant… the guttural growling hides that fact, since anyone can do it with equal success. Hell, when I play with my kid, that’s how the T-Rex speaks.

That pretty much sums it up.
Oh, and a band plug:

Thanks for the link discussing the vocals. I’ll listen to the link later (at work now).
I’m kind of with pookie and celebrate2047, I just don’t get it. But I’m always open to listening to new music, never know when you’ll find something you like.
For example, I don’t know what genre it is, but Jim Wendler put up a link to a band, 16, and I thought it was good.
As for Slipknot, I like some of their stuff, but I likely won’t buy the CD. I’ll likely listen to the samples though.
Just to show how completely messed up my music preferences are, I also listen to:
70’s and 80’s hard rock/metal (everything from Kiss to Judas Priet, Black Sabbath, etc…);
country music (new and “my wife left me and my dog ran away”);
rap (some new, though I prefer the older rap ie. Public Enemy);
Celtic Music (if you’ve never heard Christy Moore or Paul Brady, check them out);
and others I can’t think of right now.
Why limit myself?
