Yet there is a ton of great Dracula movies.
Nobody disputes that the bible has great reach. THat’s completey besides the point.
I’m waiting for a theory why serious biblemovies suck. (apart from the aforementioned g0rn)

Two-part theory:
Christian movies typically do not make much money, so the budget doesn’t allow for top notch screenwriters and directors, not to mention acting talent. Thus you are left with movies such as Facing the Giants and Fireproof (which I actually like quite a bit) with a great message/story, but a mediocre plotline and ham-fisted acting (these movies in particular were made almost entirely in house by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, GA, written starring and directed by church members - with the exception of Kirk Cameron).
Second part of theory: the aspects of secular movies which the average film-goer expects to see (violence, language, sex/sexuality) are counter to Christian mores, thus it would not make sense for a Christian film company to make a Biblically-accurate movie including those. An R-rated Christian movie would be an oxymoron, Passion of the Christ being the exception of course.

It’s not hard to imagine a movie buff coming up with 1000 great adaptations since adaptations from great books are really common.
So far, nobody came up with even ONE superb bible movie which satisfies both crosshumpers and critics.
Prince of Egypt.
Some notables from the cast: Val Kilmer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ralph Feinnes, Jeff Goldblum, Sandra Bullock, Patrick Stewart, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Helen Mirren…and Ofra Haza, singing in Hebrew.
Yes, it’s Jewish anime, but it kicks ass.

Wouldn’t have to be “Christian” to be a biblical movie.
Book of Judges alone has enough sex, violence, rape, pillage, murder, blood and gore to supply at least twenty Hollywood blockbusters.
Don’t worry, when Hollywood has squeezed the last drop of money from the Greek myths they’ll go to the Bible.

Thousands?
Name, I donno, 15.
You’re kidding, right?
Full Metal Jacket
Apocalypse Now
The Shining
2001 A Space Odyssey
Lolita
A Clockwork Orange
Paths of Glory
(…just Stanley Kubrick movies)
The Shawshank Redemption
Stand By Me
The Running Man
Carrie
Misery
Cujo
Christine
The Dead Zone
Dolores Claiborne
(…just Stephen King novels)
Blade Runner
Total Recall
The Adjustment Bureau
Minority Report
A Scanner Darkly
(…just Philip K. Dick novels)
Miller’s Crossing
The Maltese Falcon
The Thin Man
(…Dashiell Hammett)
For Whom the Bell Tolls
To Have and Have Not
A Farewell to Arms
The Snows of Kilimanjaro
The Old Man and the Sea
The Sun Also Rises
(…Hemingway)
I, Robot (Asimov)
Fight Club (Palahniuk)
The Godfather (Puzo)
Silence of the Lambs (Thomas Harris)
Bourne Identity (Robert Ludlum)
Dogs of War (Forsythe)
Day of the Jackal (Forsythe)
And James Motherfucking Bond (Fleming)
Obviously there are many, many, many more. These are just a few off the top of my head.
But yes, there are hundreds of truly great movies that have been adapte from books. And if you count all those that are not so truly great, I would be confident in saying “thousands.”

I wouldn’t call Twilight a Dracula movie, let alone a ‘great’ one. Even Nosferatu isn’t a Dracula movie: they couldn’t get the rights so changed just enough to avoid a lawsuit. The majority of bona fide Dracula movies (that is, those which actually feature Dracula) are Z -grade junk.

You brought up the many examples of good books being turned into quality movies. I just pointed out that The Bible is the quintessential good book. Here’s my theory: it’s not so much that biblical movies suck, it’s that you’re so critical of the source that distinguishing a good adaptation from a bad one would be impossible.
Most people complain about literary adaps not being close enough to the book; your criticisms are based on movies being too faithful. The fact that the book in question is The Bible doesn’t matter. I don’t see the logic in wanting movie adaptations of ANY literature you despise, which was why I made the Twilight comparison…
Earlier in the thread you said that religious movies sucked because the target audience sucked. Do you believe that a biblical movie aimed at a demographic other than the target audience would result in a better adaptation? How far removed from The Bible does a biblical movie have to be before it earns your personal seal of approval?
Ben Hur? Jesus is in it.
The Prophecy? The angel Gabriel is in that (played by Chris Walken, no less - what’s not to like?)
Bruce Almighty? God is in that…

There are a lot of good movies based off books. Our German friend said, “Thousands of superb,” book adaptation.
I wouldn’t consider Total Recall “superb”

Noah was over 500 years old before the deluge . All I remember from the preview was Russell Fucking Crowe (New Zealander BTW).
Anything that pisses off Bill Maher is worth watching.
“Anti-Religion religion”, seems you have to force-package a concept that eludes you into the most complex idea your mind can fathom.
Now, be so kind and name a great biblemovie (preferably with great sexscenes), TOGTFO ← that’s three options
So far only Varq made an interesting proposition which I might actually check out.
@SexMachine: the last real Deluge happenened shortly before the Pax Westphalica.

Die Hard 9
Rambo Second Blood Part 3
or maybe we could get a remake/reboot, those are so rare.
Ridley Scott is filming Exodus with Christian Bale as Moses and Aaron Paul as Joshua: “When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he spake unto Moses,‘There is the sound of war in the camp…bitch’”.

He really does say ‘bitch’ really nicely I must say.
