New Metallica

It means their old fans don’t want them to evolve musically.

The idea that Metallica has changed their sound to appeal to a wider audience (and in doing so, sell more records) is ridiculous, when most people don’t even like their new records.

There was that whole Napster thing, though.

I still don’t understand the “sell-out” jargon. Wouldn’t being a sell-out require Metallica to write songs that get played on the radio?
In the end my view is they became arrogant douchebags taking themselves way to seriously.

Just keep on putting out good music like The Stones or The Who did for years. I never could stand Lars whiny self important drivel.

I like the first new one, from what I can hear of it.

Another take:

Second could be OK too, but I guess we’ll see.

Exactly. The term “sellout” is just like the word “existential”- everyone uses it, no one knows what it really means.

They didn’t sell out. However, expecting these musicians who are so incredibly talented to rehash the same riffs from Kill’em All is ridiculous.

You get older, you change, you hear new music, your perspective changes.

Kill’em all was completely different from Ride the Lightning. Master and Justice were similar…and then the Black album was completely different from those. LOAD and ReLOAD were completely different from that, and St. Anger, if anything, was more similar to the older albums in the way of longer songs and lots of changes in the songs.

I really don’t understand why everyone hates on them…its more like it’s just cool to say,“Fuck Metallica, man, they like, sold out fucking years ago dude…I mean, THEY CUT THEIR HAIR dude!!”

Gimme a break. The music is incredible. They evolved. That’s why they are still popular, and Megadeth and Slayer are not.

Regardless of what’s considered cool or en vogue if music sounds good to my ears I like it. Metallica’s later stuff for the most part sucked IMO and their earlier music is what I liked. I am glad that their music is still incredible for you however.

Take care,

i think St. Anger rocks. Now, because i have a pair of testicles, i obviously own all of the albums justice, master, black, lightening, load, re-load, garage inc., s&m, etc…no, i dont have the original garage days lp, but i wasnt even alive then. but i am a big enough metallica fan to know the crazy captivation that metallica can have on you when you hear “one” live in concert, or when youre lucky enough to catch a live “sanitarium”…heard that live once, they played “one” that night too…it was amazing.

anyway, i blast the shit out of st. anger on my way to the gym, every time, without fail. it really does get me in a crazy mood, ready to fuck shit up. hate it if you want, i personally get a lot out of that album, and have loved it since the second time i listened to it.

Yea, Rubin really needs a chance to finally make it…? I’d say Metallica needs Rick Rubin a hell of a lot more than he needs them.
Yeah, you’re right. Bands like Metallica come along every day. Rubin should have blown them off. They’ll be something bigger next week no doubt.

Pantera did…
Well, this new album means I get to see Metallica for a third time. Last time they came with Godsmack. Talk about a show!
Really. The only time I saw Pantera was when I was 16 and mad on them. They played for an hour, when Biohazard was the lead up band.

Biohazard outplayed them in time and quality.

It was amazing. I remember breaking it down to $1 a minute of Pantera.

Why the hate for Load? I really enjoy it. Reload wasn’t as good, but Load was great.
Load was awesome. The only bad song was 2x4

They’ve become progressively worse with every record after the Black album, IMO.
Ill take that a step further and say they havent, IMO, had a decent album since And Justice and it was just that decent. Prior to that was ALL excellent and post has been all CRAP!!

They set the bar HIGH and havent been able to reach it in years. I dont think the ever will be able to truely go Back to the “garage” either.

It’s kind of funny seeing people say they’ve been to 3 Metallica shows!

can you elaborate on this? just curious
Just since I’ve been a fan since the mid 80’s and have seen them play live more times than I can count.

I don’t care for the Load and Re Load
albums because I don’t care for the direction they went in. I’m a much bigger fan of the first 5 albums (and 1 ep)

Wow. I have seen Pantera twice and it was absolutely amazing both times. They played for 1 hr at Ozzfest and 2 hours alone.

Before the Black album they were still a thrash band. Thrash metal is what they were great at.

I saw them at Donington a few weeks back and despite them playing the whole of “Master Of Puppets” it felt like they were just going through the motions.

It also looks like Robert Trujillo was told to tone down his stage act, which was brilliant two years back, but now he barely does anything. (Perhaps he was drawing attention to himself?)

I always felt sorry for Jason Newsted, the poor bloke did some great stuff in Flotsam and Jetsam, and then joined Metallica right at the time they gave up thrash metal.

Now to finish:

Kill ‘em all is brilliant,
Ride the Lightning is brilliant,
Master of Puppets is brilliant,
And Justice for all, has no chuffin’ bass in it, but is good.

I like Metallica, but I don’t hold out much hope for this new album.

What they need is a new singer:

Personally, I hate St. Anger with the fire of a thousand suns. I think it sucks in every possible way an album can suck. Then, I was never one for the Nu metal.

And I freaking LOVE Load. My music tastes are eclectic at best and so I really don’t mind that they changed their sound at the time. I remember them getting a bunch of crap for it, but man, the album is just MEAN.

I mean, sure, it’s not as heavy or brutal as Lightning or Puppets, but the songs have a much more…malicious feel, down and dirty, and…dare I say…grungy. Yeah, I really hated the grunge scene, but that’s the only word that I can think of at the moment. But the key word is malicous. Just plain mean. And I like that a lot. Not to mention that there was a lot more musical diversity in sounds from song to song than in some past albums. Justice comes to mind, even though its one of my fav. albums of all time along with Puppets and Lightning.

Just my two cents. They only album I really hate is Anger. Really. Hate. Really hate. Really.

Ok I’ll stop now. Sorry

Well, thank you for that “I hate with the fire of a thousand suns.”
That is intense and I am off now to buy Load, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All and maybe Lighting…
Thanks guys!

Picture me walking towards the squat rack to the soundtrack of the beginning of Devil’s Dance…

Purposeful, intense and unstoppable!

Yeah!!

Rock on everybody!

Exactly, they were thrash/speed metal, and masters of it. There’s a difference between “evolving” and completely changing the kind of music you play, quite possibly for commercial reasons. Radio-friendly hard rock is a far cry from thrash metal. Say what you want about Slayer or Pantera, but they stayed true to their roots (well, Pantera started as a glam/hair band, but that was brief and they buried it). How anyone can get fired up to lift listening to Load baffles me.

Great post, though I disagree about megadeth. Imo they have evolved along a course similiar to metallica. Maybe we are little behind in my neck of the woods but slayer and megadeth are two of the most popular bands amongst people in my age group.

Some bands chose to change their style and some don’t. An example of a band that didn’t is Pantera and they kicked ass till the very end.

Regarding Metallica, they could have a duet with Britney Spears on their next album and I would still respect them. One cannot argue with masterpieces like Ride the Lighting and Master of Puppets.

Megadeth: Killing, Peace, and Rust were their only good albums, IMO. But Rust… that was legendary. Similar to Justice in importance.

Seeing Mustaine on Some Kind of Monster… wow. That movie exposed some seriously emotional weakness.
