The worst is to tell them “You got to go heavy! You’ve got to be INTENSE!” then prescribe 3 sets of ten on the bench. Then in order to “go heavy” load the bar with about 20-50 lbs. more than they could squat and/or deadlift. However, in most places, for newbies this is standard practice. But the spotter usually gets a great back and bicep workout.

OK, here’s the ultimate advice I can give. Hire the aerobics bunny in your gym to train you. Since she’s certified by ACE or some other cool certification group just do what she says to do and you’ll get huge. Oh yeah, if you don’t get results just keep paying her and you’ll get results eventually. Gotta keep the faith.
