LOL. If you asked most people what Jesus looked like they would point to a picture of Ted Nugent…even though the Bible itself describes him as having dark skin and dark hair like wool. Yes, there has been a long history of white artists making all of history’s characters look like them no matter the source material. That doesn’t make it right.
I just find it funny that they didn’t know this already. If you were to just look at pictures, you would think white people were all that mattered throughout history. Somehow, Jesus had BLUE EYES and blondish hair…despite coming from the middle east.

Things like this are why there were specifically black comic book characters created in the 70’s like Blade and even the Black Panther. Before then, there had been ZERO INFLUENCE in those fictional worlds by any other racially described people. Hell, before maybe 15 years ago, you can bet that if they had made the movie Iron Man that Rody would have been a white guy and no one would have said anything about the change in script as far as a negative reaction.

Conan’s background is MYTHICAL. I also have no doubt that interest of appealing to the market that was believed to be buying most of the comics, that they would make him LOOK like the target audience and the artists themselves when artists were commissioned to draw him.

The ancestors of Atlantis are not “white people” or “black people”. Sorry if that hurts feelings.

I do find it hilarious that some would scream for the Rock to play the part…until they find out he is half black.
Agreed. I’d post more, but long paragraphs and deep thinking isn’t my thing.

Black Jesus!

I remember as a kid seeing this episode and actually learning about the biblical description of Jesus. Who knew Good Times would be educational.

Good points.
Conan was never altered for his target audience. He was written that way for them. The artists then depicted him that way. He has been drawn as a dark skinned caucasian with blue eyes in almost every version, with the possible exception of a lone version done in Mexico.
Based on the description from REH , a dark skinned white actor would probably be the closest thing to the source material as written.
Right. Care to quote directly from the book what he looked like WITHOUT a commentary from other authors trying to peg him as a white guy?

Let’s stick with the facts as far as this description.

I don’t remember ever reading “he looked like a white guy”. I do remember him having dark skin and blue eyes…which as written earlier, would make him look more other-worldly or more like the Aborigines than a tanned white guy (which would match his Atlantis ancestry). The book didn’t say “tanned”. It also didn’t say “beige”.

It doesn’t surprise me that white artists would make the character look like them. That would be WHY that one drawing you mentioned from Mexico is the one that does NOT look like the others. My guess is, other artists of other races, if they had the chance, would have had more pop culture influence as far as his appearance.

X,
The illustration from the Mexican Conan, has him with blond hair and blue eyes.
I have replied several times, but squash85 summed it up best in his post. I noticed that others have chosen to ignore what he wrote. I did not and replied right to him.
It flies in the face of what they would like to believe, and since it comes right from REH, it must sting a little.
Guy, what squash wrote was “a little bit of REH” mixed in with a hell of a lot of reading between the lines from other authors. The Cimmerians in the book ARE NOT THE HISTORICAL CIMMERIANS…which means when they try to go on about race beyond that, they lose ground.

Loosely based does not mean “historically accurate”. That means it can be open to interpretation which is why I said only take direct quotes from the book itself WITHOUT other commentary.

Actually, that show did teach life lessons. That show and Family Matters.

^ your fighting a lost cause X they prefer a miror image conan rather than one who Acts as the character was meant to be.

Your saying it is a “little bit of REH” does not make it so. I have heard the same thing from other REH fans and Conan followers. If you tried to make these arguments on a Conan message board, you would be torn to shreds. Do you have the original writings in front of you? Go on over to one of those previously mentioned boards and see how far you get.
I never said Conan was a white guy. I said that based on the description from REH, that a dark skinned white actor would probably be most suitable. I dont even mind Momoa as Conan. I have seen enough photos of him to know that his darker complexion along with longer hair would look suiting. Except for his lack of size.
Four60, losing battles make this site interesting.

^ well if losing battles is what it’s all about…

Let’s Make you the casting director. Who do you see as conan from the selection of today’s Actors?

And to be honest Conan always kinda had the face of a young Tony Danza. But I wouldn’t cast him

Tony Danza. Good one.
I like Momoa. He has a face that does resemble Conan’s. If you put longer hair on the image I attached, tossed on blue contacts and added about 40lbs. or so, he would look great.

LOL at all of the Conan knowledge I’ve gained from this thread.

I guess I’ll go order REH’s works and read them all this weekend. I just read a whole bunch of Conan comics my pops left in the attic years ago. Momoa may actually pull off Conan because he’s actually played a character pretty well that doesn’t friggin’ talk worth anything. But yeah, he would need some more muscle but considering all of those pictures of him are old, he may have actually put some beef on himself over the years.

I doubt I’ll go see it though. If you’re going to use a former stargate actor for the role of Conan, Chris Judge would have been the better choice. He’s more wordless and larger than Momoa.

^ really I always seen him as the books with rugged looks. And the comics had him almost with caveman features. Like Tony Daza Really.

I know you thought I was joking but the guy from the green mile or the actor that played juggernaut an from lock stock an two smoking barrels if younger fit the bill Character wise

How is this guy any bigger than the guy they chose already?

Hell, the one they chose is at least imposing in terms of HEIGHT. If he can actually gain about 30lbs of muscle, “movie magic” will actually make him look bigger than he is.

So your dispute is really just with the race if the guy playing him?

h

I’m going for more of a type than a race. To me How he was (acted reacted) was always what made Conan worth reading

CONAN

IF I WAS CASTING DIRECTOR:

CONAN

CONAN

CONAN

CONAN

he would get called in for is caveman face and so I could argue the value of the other two. Wouldn’t push Young Danza for the part.

Who would be your TOP 3 for Conan “X”?

Wasn’t Kevin Levrone trying to get into acting not long ago?

Slap a wig on this picture and tell me that isn’t 100% Conan.

Are you blind?
That is the same guy!!!
Then you bring up race?
What is your deal?
