Good Choice
I took a closer look to that Momoa dude. In all honesty his facial features actually can do a credible Conan. Those pics of him sporting dreadlocks were misleading. Still, his physique sucks big time for that role, but in the other hand where to find a massively built actor with decent acting capability and charisma?
The Rock? Well he got the built, the charisma but not the facial features. Sadly Arnold was unique and the first Conan movie is a masterpiece that’s impossible to reproduce.
I believe that new Conan could be a decent movie but no way we, the old timers and purists, can be possibly satisfied with it…

LOL. If you asked most people what Jesus looked like they would point to a picture of Ted Nugent…even though the Bible itself describes him as having dark skin and dark hair like wool. Yes, there has been a long history of white artists making all of history’s characters look like them no matter the source material. That doesn’t make it right.
This.
I just find it funny that they didn’t know this already. If you were to just look at pictures, you would think white people were all that mattered throughout history. Somehow, Jesus had BLUE EYES and blondish hair…despite coming from the middle east.
Things like this are why there were specifically black comic book characters created in the 70’s like Blade and even the Black Panther. Before then, there had been ZERO INFLUENCE in those fictional worlds by any other racially described people.
Hell, before maybe 15 years ago, you can bet that if they had made the movie Iron Man that Rody would have been a white guy and no one would have said anything about the change in script as far as a negative reaction.
Conan’s background is MYTHICAL. I also have no doubt that in the interest of appealing to the market that was believed to be buying most of the comics, that they would make him LOOK like the target audience and the artists themselves when artists were commissioned to draw him.
The ancestors of Atlantis are not “white people” or “black people”. Sorry if that hurts feelings.
I do find it hilarious that some would scream for the Rock to play the part…until they find out he is half black.
This articles describes how Aryans moved to Iran around the second millenium B.C. If Jesus were Iranian, he could have had blue eyes and blonde hair, like a lot of native Iranians today have. Just because you live in the middle east doesn’t mean you have to look like American preconceived notions.
From Wikipedia:
In Central, Western Asia (Middle East) and South Asia, there is also a low frequency of natural blonds found among some ethnic populations. In Afghanistan, blonds are particularly found among the Pashtun and Nuristani people who have a blond hair frequency of one in three.[23]
In Pakistan the Kalash tribe sometimes have blond hair. Blonde hair colour can naturally occur even among people from Northern part of Pakistan which includes Kashmiris, Kalash, Pashtuns, and descendants of European colonists found in various parts of the country like Goa, Pondicherry, and North India.
Blonds are also found in Turkey (especially in northern (Caucasus) and western (European) parts of the country), and northern and western parts of Iran. The Levant Israel (especially among the Ashkenazi, who have some European admixture), western Syria, the Palestinian territories, Jordan and Lebanon have a frequency of blonds as well.
In Iran, a number of natural blonds are found in some ethnic groups, especially Persians and Pashtuns. Blond hair is also common among some Berbers of North Africa, especially in the Rif.[24] Emigration and invasion from North Africa to Southern Europe (especially Iberian Peninsula) added the number of natural blonds in that region.
Emigration from Middle East, Central and South Asia, and North Africa added the population of blonds in Americas, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other parts of Africa and Europe.
Ok, after some editing his wiki now says he will gain 50 pounds for the role, true fact I just made up.

FUCKING “A+”
I’ve always heard of Conan being bronzed from sun exposure with dark hair and blue eyes. As I understand it, Cimmerians as Robert E. Howard wrote them were Nordic, which is would be no surprise considering his and Lovecraft’s racism and belief that the more ‘mixed’ a group was the more low classed they were.
This would also make sense for him to make Conan’s tribe descendents of Atlanteans due the the belief that people from the mythological continent were a ‘pure’ race- you can look this up in the roots of the Nazi belief system which was actually quite widespread pre-WWII. In all this, I understand that Conan would be caucasian.
Cimmeria is described as a harsh landscape with rugged mountains and dark shadowy forests. Howard often makes reference to the Cimmerian people’s hardiness and military prowess, as well as to their many other impressive skills.
They can climb seemingly unscalable cliffs, track humans and animals with ease, and stalk their prey without making a sound. They are tall, dark with light colored eyes, and exceptionally strong. Despite these almost super-human attributes, he goes on to point out that they are an “uncivilized” and tribal people.
Their governing body is vaguely alluded to as the elders, suggesting a sort of tribal oligarchy. The apparent primitiveness of the Cimmerians and their sense of justice is often juxtaposed with the malevolence of the “civilized” races in Hyboria.
This creates a very different sort of fantasy world, with the “barbarians” as the just and noble, while the kings and “civilized” men and women who would be the heroes of traditional medieval fantasy become ruthless, corrupt, and cold.
The inhabitants of fictional Cimmeria are loosely based by Robert E. Howard on the historical Cimmerians, who lived on the northern Black Sea coast in the 8th and 7th centuries BC. They also may be based on the Cimbri, a Teutonic-Celtic people.
Howard endeavoured to connect the fictional peoples of the Hyborian Age with later historical groups, such as the Cimmerians (depicted as ancestors of the ancient Gaels), their hereditary enemies the Picts (compare to the Picts of eastern and northern Scotland), and Vanir (sea-roving Danes, i.e. Vikings) to the west and north respectively and their allies the Aesir (generally depicted in the Hyborian Age as a fair Nordic-type race, linked by Howard to ancient Britons and Gauls) to the northeast.[1]

No one living.
Face it, Conan, if he were real today, would be the type of guy the whiners on this very forum would be calling out for being “too mean” or not respecting their 15" biceps.
Any attempt at this character right now is doubtfully going to show all out disregard for social niceties or something so anti-social/“masculine” as using force to solve all problems.
It wouldn’t connect with the guys in the audience squeezing their BPA-environmentally shrunken testicles into the tightest pair of skinny jeans they could find at the GAP.
I mean, these guys aren’t exactly the type to “seize the day”…unless that is the name of a new mocha frap at Starbucks.
Perhaps the writers here will surprise me like 300 did. I think its society I’m really worried about.
please all band together with me and boycott this movie if they cast an “Abercrombie” physique
Crom help us

Amen to the boycott.
I will not spend any money to see this movie. Maybe I will download it and then laugh/cry about it with all my friends. It like making the HULK scrawny and weak (and a pussy).
The only way to make that kid star impressive as conan should be is by going illegal big time. I mean injecting test, hgh, experimental myostatin blockers and so on. I don’t think this will happen though, so the movie is probably fucked.
Most of the people cheering on Conan would be the same ones trying to call him “insecure” or “overcompensating” for something if he were right in front of them today.
Let’s be clear that Robert E. Howard was what we would today call a racist. Race was important to R.E. Howard and was an important part of his stories. He was as fixated on it as he was on strength and the downfall of civilizations. (I was a little concerned that people might be offended by the following quotes, but there is a lot of complaint on board about how men in America are easily offended sissies, so I figure tough T-Man can take it.)
In regard to the Cimmerians, and the issue of Conan’s race, this quote form his Hyborian Age essay makes it clear: "This drift {of Cimmerians and Aesir/Vanir} resulted from a growing population which thronged the steppes West of the inland sea, now known as the Caspian and much reduced in size – to such an extent that migration became an economic necessity. Known now as Aryans, these tribes moved into the areas now occupied by India, Asia Minor and much of Europe.
Some variations of these primitive sons of Aryas are still recognized today; others have been long forgotten since. The Nemedians of Irish legendry were the Nemedian Aesir, while the later sea-roving Danes were the descendants of the Vanir. The blond Achaians, Gauls and Britons were decended from the pure-blooded Aesir. The Gaels, ancestors of Irish and Highland Scotch came of pure-blooded Cimmerian clans. "
That’s right. The Irish and Scottish are descendants of pure Cimmerians. More interestingly, The “sons of Aryas” mentioned in the beginning of the Arnold Conan movie were Aryans. In his story Wings In The Night, Howard also wrote: “The ancient empires fall, the dark-skinned peoples fade and even the demons of antiquity gasp their last, but over all stands the Aryan barbarian, white-skinned, cold-eyed, dominant, the supreme fighting man of the earth.”
Howard himself was basically a white supremacist. One of his characters said, “Born and raised in Arizona of good Virginia fighting stock, I held niggers n contempt and was a strong believer in Nordic and especially Celtic superiority.” Though this was a character, and not Howard speaking, the speaker is a proxy for the author’s own views. In reference to a trial in Honolulu where native Hawaiians were accused of rape, Howard wrote, “I know what would have happened to them in Texas. I don’t know whether an Oriental smells any different than a nigger when he’s roasting, but I’m willing to bet the aroma of scorching hide would have the same chastening effect on his surviving tribesman.”
Much of the horror in his stories was based on his disgust with mixed races. In “Shadows in Zamboula” Howard has Conan persuaded by the argument, “in this accursed city …where white, brown, and black folk mingle together to produce hybrids of all unholy hues and breeds … who can tell who is a man, and who is a demon in disguise?” This is based on his experience in New Orleans where he encountered a man of Chinese and African heritage. Howard, in a letter, describes the man as an “it”.
Conan the Cimmerian risks his life and standing among a black tribe in "Vale of the Lost Women"to rescue a white woman “simply because of [her] race.” If you go over the descriptions of Black characters in his stories, they are not very flattering. “His features reflected titanic vitality no less than his huge body. But he was all Negro- flaring nostrils, thick lips, ebony skin” The But implies the nostrils, lips, and skin somehow contradict titanic vitality.
Conan was not just white, he was white be design and purpose. Howard had a political axe to grind with his stories: he wanted to give expression to his racist beliefs. Race is not peripheral to the Conan stories, it is central to them.
Any discussion of keeping Conan true to his origins must take this into account. His race is as much a part of the character as his muscles.
(Note: I don’t endorse Howard’s views. Also, even if the actor playing Conan were white and ripped as hell, the movie would still suck because they would do other things contrary to Howard’s vision such as give him a tragic origin story, a true-love, or any motive other than whim, lust, and greed.)

Picture of Jason Momoa before shooting in Bulgaria
Jesus lads’ I don’t know?
I think we’re in for a big let down! I suppose time will only tell and when the movie is ‘actually’ finished we can critique it properly’ until then lets continue on with how shit Mr. Momoa looks as Conan the ‘Barbarian’ (smirk…)
Great more history.
Who gives a fuck. As a kid a kid we knew most stories had some race BS involved.
Loved Tarzan as a kid that was full of racist BS, the Bible, pick up any history book Manifest Destiny these nuts.
Hell The first 13-14 presidents had slaves. So keep your mythological history to your D&D club. I have enough real sexist racist BS in the real world to deal with.
As for Conan I’ll put my money down to see it. Twilight Conan will still beat another summer of love stories.
As for me I have a 700 squat to beat, some beer to drink and women of many races to fuck. Enjoy your fake History.
It’s an old pic but nuff said…
