My wife and I just got back from Philly and ate at Pats steaks. I thought it was awesome. Only today I read that true Philly natives don’t eat there. They say Pats is for tourists and tourists rated it as the best. So where is the BEST cheese steaks(at least according to the locals)because I’m definitly going back.
Don’t be fooled by the fact I live in Cali. I used to live in Philly and let me tell you that the best steaks are at John’s Roast Pork, located on Weccaoe and Snyder in what looks like an abandoned industrial area. Don’t be fooled! These steaks are the BEST. The meat is perfectly juicy and the cheese melted in to create absolute perfection. Get is w/ sharp provolone and you will agree that this is the best 'steak you have ever had. Guaranteed.
Dalessandro’s in Roxborough is also fantastic - it is a close second. I also heard that Chinks in northeast Philly is awesome, though I have never been. It’s best to stay away from Jim’s, Geno’s, Pat’s. Tony Luke’s (the original one, not the one in Center City) is also outstanding.
Here’s a question:
best Deli in Philly?
I was always partial to Koch’s Deli in West Philly - a few blocks from the U.Penn campus.
Koch’s is the best deli anywhere (and that includes New York). I also used to stroll down Locust Street to get to Koch’s from Penn. Ah…those were the days.

Jims. The original Jims in Overbrook. But nothing wrong with Pats. Nothing like crusiing Broad Street and then heading to Pats after we’ve won a big game.

Yeah-it’s awesome!
The best cheesesteak I’ve ever had was from a joint called Mama’s off City Line Ave.
steve’s in NE is by far the best
I dated a girl from the philly area. The two big ones are Pat’s and Gino’s right across the street from each other. She liked Pats, so I guess it’s not just for tourists.
I think it depends what qualities you want your steak and cheese to have. Some people say its not “real” without the cheez whiz. I personally prefer other cheeses that stick and melt better.

I will respectfully disagree.
The best deli anywhere is Zingerman’s Delicatessen in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
I used to work there - and while Koch’s is the best I’ve ever had on the East Coast (certainly better than Katz’s, 2nd Ave. Deli, or Dean & Deluca in NYC) - Zingerman’s beats them all hands down… best meats, best bread, best Russian dressing, hell they even use straight Emmenthaler swiss on their Reubens!! … do yourself a favor and trek on down to Ann Arbor and you’ll see what I’m talking about. ![]()
www.zingermans.com if you’re curious.
Tony Lukes…Oregon Ave. off of Delaware. The best!!! Also have great Roast Pork with Provolone and Broccoli Raab…mmmm!
Deli’s. I always like Famous at 4th. and Bainbridge. They just changed owners after 35 yrs. and I haven’t been there to check it out.
Damm…now I am hungry.
