Need For Speed

Regular I am sfp.

Today is has turned into a possible nightmare. I did something to my heel and it’s been a little sore all day. I must have stepped on something. I didn’t think skating would bother it. I was half right. The rough terrain I skate over, brickloc and planked bridges. Plus the detour I had to take to do a number two, was over a really rough surface.

I got 30km in and start to get really concerned. My heal was getting quite sore. This has the potential to distroy my entire season. Heel injuries do not heal fast.

There is a weather system moving in that will bring rain for a couple of days. So there will be time for lots of ice and heat, not to mention the pathetic praying for a guick recovery.

The only good thing is I don’t remember hurting my heel. This I hope means the injury is superfical and was just aggravated by the detour I had to made.

Right none I’m going to try and not get all stressed out over it until I have a better diagnosis. I’ll see how long it takes to calm down. Time to think positive!

Lot’s of rain. If I’m going to be injured it may as well rain.

All my research on the net leads me to the conclusion. That I have over stretched the Planter Fascia (tendons that run from heel to base of the toes).

This in my case was most likely caused be tight calf muscles. I am led to this conclusion by the fact that I got a pulled calf muscle by simply walking down some steps. I mentioned this a few days back. It’s still very sore but at least now I have a treatment plan for recovery. Good old Ice and Stretching.

I am hoping that getting the calves stretched out more will allow the Planter Fascia to relax and heal. I really need this to go away and not come back.

I can only blame myself for neglecting to take proper care of myself. It is the reason I get up so early. As of late I’ve been dogging it in the morning and not doing a full stretch. I’ve finished beating myself up over this and am ready to start the healing.

The worst thing is, I know better. Stretching is the greatest preventive medicine for the prevention of sports injuries. I have really beat myself up over this and I totally deserve it, so feel free to point and laugh at my carelessness. Healing so I can remain strong.

Crazy skating SL, you are a better man than I.

Stream…
I suffered from Plantar Fascitis (spelling?) for about 2 years, in both feet. Started in my right, then from compensating, began in my left, and this was from ice hockey and improper stretching prior… and after hockey/ running etc.

In the mornings was the worst, felt like I was crippled, and thought my days of hockey were over. But then the day wears on, and as long as you keep moving you are fine, but as soon as you sit and rest for over 30 minutes it tightens right up again.

So, what I did…
Stretching the calves… and the toes… everyday. Hurts like a %^$#!, but ya gotts do it.

Massage the bottom (arches) of my own feet, and toe exercises. I read about this somewhere… can’t remember where, but I did it and it seemed to help.

When sitting at the table, watching tv, whatever and whenever, take a towel/ cloth of some sort, lay it flat on the floor, put your foot on it and then “gather” the cloth with your toes, by crunching them and grabbing the cloth with your toes… making like a “toe fist”… if this makes sense.

I would suggest doing both sides, stave off potential injury on other side as well.

This will hurt, and you will probably get cramps in your feet at the start, but it seemed to work for me.

Good luck, heal fast.

Thanks a million Bunny. Been stretching like crazy already. I will start the others you mentioned as soon as I finish my smoothie.

There is nothing worse than waking up in the morning and being instantly reminded that you are still a meer mortal. Stay strong brother and lift heavy!

You underrate yourself far to much, but thank you, stay strong!

Noticeable improvement but not in the weather. Real nasty system is sweeping over the northwest coast. Heavy winds and rain for the next couple of days. My heal should be healed by then. All in all I only lost two skating days.

Thanks Bunny for the extra rehab exercises. They along with the stretching are making this a fast recovery. I’m still beating myself up over my major oversight. That little pull in the calf muscle was a clear sign and I totally missed it. I’m really getting tired of relearning lessons. Such is my life.

I’ve decided to start buying my own set of weights again. It’s all about time. I just don’t have the time to be going to the gym and back daily. That hour and a half of travel and screwing around is way to much. I’ll still use the gym for winter training, mainly because I need the machines. The spring and summer maintenance I can do at home. I still have my bench and bars so a couple hundred will put me right back in the game. Staying strong and dreaming big!

Today I woke to no pain. Did my stretching and other little foot exercises. Now it’s all about this crappy weather. Staying strong with a smile on my face. Have a great day everyone, lift heavy.

Streamline- Glad to hear that you are feeling better. And I can sympathize with the weather. We have had rain, though not constant, eveyday for the past 7 days. My wife may be used to it (she’s from western Washington State) but I am not. It is getting depressing.
On the good side, it gives you another day to make sure you are fully recovered.

MY WEATHER RANT!

Thanks Littlestrick. They’re calling it a winter storm. The unseasonable high winds 50-70km and the sheer amount of rain. It’s totally depressing, the winter that will not stop. The temps are well below seasonal and there is no sign of it stopping any time soon. They keep showing sunny days in the long term forecast but they keep disappearing as we get closer to them.

I’m starting to lose it. My temper is getting really short. Almost tore a chunk out of my supervisor this morning. Tried telling me I need to communicate better with the head office in Burnaby. Wrong topic on the wrong day. So I hopped into the van and hit the road before I hit him. My day has sucked big time.

There is only one cure for this. Continuous sunshine for at least 30 days. This is the third lousy spring in a row. Once the weather changes we’ll be baking our brains out until we climatize ourselve. END RANT!!

Stream - Good to hear you’re feeling better.

Living in Maine, I can certainly sympathize with ‘weather related setbacks’. We have a saying up here:

“If you don’t like the weather… just wait a minute.”

Misery loves company.

It’s gotta clear up soon, your foot is better. It’s been a really wet Spring here as well steamline. Ours is finally improving yours will soon.

Back in the game. I wasn’t able to do the skate I wanted. Which was an easy warm-up and then put in a 50-60km skate. I hit the trail and the beast broke loose. Over a week of pent up energy. Once I felt that smooth stride and started picking up speed. The beast took over and there was no stopping me. I did 40km all out, I made every traffic light and caught and passed all but one cyclist.

I was fried at the end, totally spend and feeling every muscle in my body. I felt awesome. I can see why people think we’re crazy, because we are. Who else day after day puts themselves through such discomfort and smiles about it. For me it’s doing this or total insanity, this last week re-enforced that belief in me.

All my co-workers and my daughter will argee with that statement. It was a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde all week long. I’ve been a total asshole, trust me it was bad!

Knowing you’re not out of the game, but unable to play is the worst feeling there is. I have my happy face again. Can’t wait until tomorrow! Staying strong because the alternative really sucks!

Glad to hear that you were able to get back at it. I was especially interested in the, “I made every traffic light and caught and passed all but one cyclist.” What speeeds to you get up to? (Sorry…if that is stated earlier in the log) Awesome work!

My wife would agree with the Jekyll/Hyde analogy. I tend to get that way on weekends, once I run out of things to do (mowing, weedeating, honey-dos, etc…) Of late, it has been this way, to some degree, on the offdays from working out. I have to keep a close eye on myself…

I know that restless feeling too well. Glad you had a great day!

Thanks Littlestrick. Speeds vary depending on terrain, body conditioning & responce plus wind conditions. Cyclists are training tools and most are just in my way. Those out for some fresh air and a little exercise. It’s the road racers that I seek. Those that see me coming and start cranking it because they know what happens if I get into their draft.

I used to race bikes so I know the humbling feeling they get. To be truthful I want the ones I can’t catch. The workout is far more intense and therefore more enjoyable and benifical. To answer your question my top recorded speed was 43kmh, average speed is above 22-25kmh. That’s including hills, overpasses, planked bridges, trail congestion and traffic lights.

I get a better understanding of my overall speed when I do a time trail around circle drive at the University. I do it early am on Sundays to avoid traffic. I’ll start them in a couple of weeks once the weather stabilizes.

I think most if not everyone on this forum feels it. We’re a special breed of people which makes it easy to bond. Even over great distances. Stay strong Brother.

I’m exhausted, I deserve a nap.

Excluding almost getting hit by a car and a truck. I had a great skate today. My quads were so pumped I could stand up staight with out stretching them out. I love that feeling so much, my reward for a great workout. Today was pretty much the same as yesterday. I just hammered it out. The trail was pretty much empty. The only serious cyclist got away from me at the traffic lights. Which left me and my heart to determine the pace. Managed a really solid 50km. I’m very content at the moment. Tomorrow is up in the air but it is a day off so I should be able to work around the showers that are predicted.

The long term weather forecast isn’t favorable, but I should be able to squeeze in some skates. Then they will mostly be changing the forecast in a day or two. Or even later today, crazy spring weather this year. It was snowing earlier today on the far east coast, poor f’ers I feel for them!
