Need For Speed

What a difference. New wheels and bearings make for a real smooth sweet skate. Having more urethane on the wheel really absorbs the impact on the planked bridges.

The wind was howling from the SW at about 25kmh which is the usual a double edged sword. Have to love the tail wind, to bad it has to be worked for. Had to get down really low to avoid getting pushed backwards. Then I just flew down the trail. Did two laps and called it a day. That wind gave the legs a good pump.

Just a short skate today. Had a really long day at work, plus I had some stress in the lower, lower back. Hit the trail at 6pm and did a 25km skate. Three days off this weekend so lots of long skates and sunny days.

Nice job stream. Always amazed how you do this. Driving 25km makes me tired.

Strong work as always! and 500 km for april with over a week left. Nice!

Thanks a lot guys, been quite the month so far.

I want to do an 80km this weekend. So I plan on trying Sat., Sun. & Mon. hoping I will find the stamina on one of the three days.

My body is starting to feel the km’s. Although I will make my quota tomorrow or Sunday. I plan on easing off the big skates the last three days of the month. Give myself some fresher legs to kick off May.

I want 800km in May, 1000km in June, 1200km in July and 1600km (1000 miles) in August. I could already do May’s distance but I don’t want to fatigue my legs. It’s going to be a long haul so sticking to the plan is really important. The Ego has zero input on this matter.

The winter training is really paying off. I feel very strong and my endurance is untapped. I am recovering from my skates without any difficulty. I am generally biting the bit to get out and skate so motivation is not a concern.

Did a 35km after work. Strong head wind again so the legs got a good pumping. The wind is an awesome training aid. Skating into it successfully requires the lowest possible speed skating stance, form and maximum effort.

The return trip is absolutely amazing. With the legs totally jacked from skating into the wind combined with the tail wind. Well I was on fire. The distance covered from right foot to right foot is between 10-12 meters and about 2 seconds (rough estimate). There were moments when I scared the shit out of myself. I love doing this so f’n much!

It’s going to be a great weekend.

Great skating and big plans
tear it up!

Thanks kmc, the one thing I know for sure. If you never try you will never succeed.

Checked the weather last night, 11 degrees celcius with a few clouds in the morning and clear for the afternoon. Woke this morning to cloud cover from horizon to horizon. Checked the weather station to check for major changes in the weather, none!

I just shock my head and decided I would get ready for my skate at 2 o’clock. The sun broke through at about 1:30 but it was still cool. It was a temperature that was to warm for winter wear and to cool for summer wear. Still the sun felt awesome!

Laid out a solid 50km. My legs are feeling very powerful. I was still able to push hard at the 45-50km mark. Tomorrow should be warmer with very light winds. So I expect a greater distance. Staying strong and enjoying life as much as possible.

I wasn’t sure how to start this post. With word of my personal best skate of 83km in 4hrs 10min. Or the fact that everything below my sternum hurts. The last 5km, heading back to the van, was the longest distance I have yet to cover. Every stride required an individual effort. My feet were numb and the left one was hurting at the balls of the foot. My glutes and quads were fried to a crisp. The last trip over the overpass had me cringing.

Once back at the van I couldn’t get my skates off fast enough. It felt so awesome to stop and sit down. The endorphines were working overtime today. If I wasn’t hurting so much I’d have a major buzz going on.

Exhaustion was next to set in. I so much wanted to just go home, lay down and sleep. Not going to happen though, food and liquid first. Then stretch and rub my awesome legs. After that I can do as I like.

Today’s accomplishment puts 90km up on the block for May. For some reason I just can’t get excited about it, at the moment. It will be impossible for me not to break 800km this month, short of not skating at all. That’s not about to happen.

With 80km under my belt. I can be comforted by the thought. I only need to skate ten times in May to make my quota (my leg just twitched, that’s funny). The next four days will be all about speed and having major fun. I deserve it! Quota Made!

That is just awesome stream! f’n incredible!

My leg just twitched, too.

Took yesterday off, the winds were 17kmh with gust from 25-35kmh. I just didn’t have the heart to get out and fight those headwinds.

I just laid around all day and did absolutely nothing. I did feel a little guilty but I got over it. I was kind of strange not doing anything on a sunny day.

Did a 35km skate today. I chased everything in sight. Caught everyone but one, that big one that got away from me. I passed this one Lady and she said “Well isn’t this embarrassing”. So I said back to her, “Not as much as it is for the guys I pass”. That made the pill a little easier to shallow.

Had a hell of a time getting my right skate off. I was sitting on the bench I’d gotten the left off. Then when I bent over to undo the other I got a cramp on the left side of my abs. I can usually stretch them out pretty easily. Not today, so that was a bitch to do. Ab cramps are one of the side effects of skating bent over for hours on end. The other side effect is awesome abs.

At times I can get completely caught up in what I’m doing. I forget I have a game plan laid out to get me where I’m going. Basically I need to stay the course and stop trying to accomplish everything today.

I have not skated for the last two days because I’m not supposed to. The training plan is to start each month with major skating time and distance. This way I can build up days off for recovery.

My Ego however has a different agenda. It wishs to show me that I am truly invincible. Which only gets me into major trouble. The feeling of guilt I get when I don’t workout doesn’t help matters either.

Tomorrow is the first of May and it will be sunny and hot. A perfect start to the month. Four 50km skates a week is all I need to make guota.

Weather is the stickler and the main reason to get the skates in early in the month. The possibility of minor injuries is another reason. Which was my wake-up call yesterday.

As I was leaving a customer homes, not carrying anything. I step down onto the first step I got a pull in my left calf. It wasn’t bad and is already healed. It did let me know that my Ego is once again wrong, I’m not invincible just a meer mortal.

Time off for recovery is as important as working out. A lesson I still have a difficult time understanding, someday I’ll learn. Well probably NOT!

you and me both, brother.

Sorry to jump in so late, but…that just floors me. You skated further in April than I drove my vehicle…and I drive to work 5 days a week!

The thought of it makes my legs seize…

Great work!

I was thinking of you when I was posting. Different sports same intense personality. Plus that God like attitude doesn’t help in the least bit.

Thanks LittleStrick. Crazy thing is, unless I’m cranking it at top speed. Anything under 40km doesn’t even feel like I’ve done a workout. The other crazy thing is. It’s more difficult to consume the calories I need than to do the skating. I will be getting married soon however, to my blender. Stay strong and live long.

Stream - Your log reads like a great published journal-- like Neil Peart’s (Rush’s drummer) bicycling memoirs or “Ghost Rider”.

Add in some mental and emotional tension, maybe a love interest, perhaps some flashbacks to childhood, and I think you have some publishing awards coming your way

I went back a few pages and didn’t see anything regarding ‘accessory work’ like non-skating things you do (if any). Sorry if I just missed it.

When you’re in your groove racking up miles, is that your M.O. to improve speed and distance-- skate more (more = better), or do you have other routines. How about what you eat for endurance?

Ouch…

Thanks SteelyD, first off you are looking awesome Dude. Huge would be another discription, keep up the amazing work.

My accessory work consists of weight training during the winter. During the skating season I do lots of speed and explosive work. Right now I’m letting my body adapt to the new work load before I start. Then I’ll post the crazy stuff my last trainer designed for me.

My skating is all about speed and distance. Since I don’t race there is zero need to do cross over drills or sprint drills. My speed work comes from catching up to cyclists. My goal is all four over fifty world records. My dream is all four overall world records. No matter how it turns out, I’m going to have the time of my life.

Short skates require oatmeal, bananas and WW toast.

Over 50km requires this awesome smoothie

2c nonfat yogurt 274 cal 28g protein
1/2c hemp heart seeds 320 cal 22g protein
2Tbs gr. almonds 70 cal 2g protein
2Tbs gr. pecans 50 cal 1g protein
1 scoop Protein powder 24g protein
1/4c gr. salba seed 8g protein
3 large bananas 363 cal 4.5g protein
1 1/2c fr. raspberries 90 cal
1 1/2c fr. blueberries 121 cal

Total cal 1288 protein 85g.

Plus an energy drink (like I need caffine) and I take along a energy bar just in case.

Wow, that is some smoothie, but I’m sure 50k requires at least that. That much fiber would keep me regular for a month!
