Need a Low Fat Diet

I was released Thursday from a hospital in St. Louis, MO where I had an ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography). I was diagnosed with papillary stenosis of both the pancreatic duct and the billiary duct. I had stents placed in both ducts to enlarge the ducts to allow better flow of juices from the liver and pancreas. During the testing I changes were seen in the pancreatic duct that indicates I have been suffering chronic pancreatitis for some time now.

Here is where I need some help…I have been prescribed a low fat diet set of guidelines to follow. Under 30 grams of fat a day for the rest of my life! How in world will I ever get my fat intake that low? Any help is welcome.

The doctor didn’t recommend anything at all? He just said to have less than 30g a day or you’ll suffer from x and y? That sucks. Oh, and I don’t know. Someone else may be able to help you though. Hope that happens!

I’d get a second opinion. I know absolutely nothing about medicine, but I know doctors can be misinformed or out-of date with procedures. I went in for a small rash I had on my foot many years ago. One doctor told me it was ring worm and prescribed some cream. When that didn’t work, I went back and saw someone else. They said it was eczema, and the rash was gone in days after getting the right medication. It was a very minor incident and doesn’t compare to yours, but I think the second opinion is crucial.

A second opinion might be beneficial, but really I think your doctor is just old school and is using an old mindset to treat you. Like in the 90’s when they thought fat was bad for you. I would go back and get a clarification from him- ask him how much mono and poly unsaturated, how much saturated, etc.? Really put him to the test to see if he’s just throwing out the 30g number to be cautious, or if he knows what he is talking about. If he does seem to know what he’s doing have him give you a referral to a dietitian. No one on here is going to be able to help you pare your diet down to 30g of a fat a day. Hell I had more than that with just my first meal of the day.

For those of you that are going to retort with the “trust doctors” crap… well I don’t. I’ve known too many of them that don’t bother to update their knowledge as they go along and only learn new stuff after a patient challenges them.

The liver creates bile, which emulsifies fat making it digestible. Bile is stored in the gall bladder and released when the small intestine sense fat entering it.

Go see another doctor, or get this one to clarify things, no one on here is qualified to give you advice on this topic. At least, go see a registered dietitian on the issue, they will be able to help you somewhat.

Good luck.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. I have am set up with a dietician to help me out.

Make sure that he understands your requirements as a weightlifter. Most likely, he’ll put you on some bullshit FDA/USDA diet. Granted, those diets aren’t all too bad for the general public, but we’re not quite the general public.
