Ill always remember Jermaine O’neal swinging wildly at a chubby piston fan who looked like Turtle from Entourage…I give that chubby dude credit he stood up to that Giant O’Neal and swung right back
That Indiana team was one of my favourite teams to watch growing up.
I loved the combo of Artest and O’Neal in their prime, plus a declining Miller

then-Pacer Scot Pollard: Some of the fans, they get down on the court and are saying, “I’m going to go punch this guy. I’m going to go punch this guy.” Then they get close and they’re like, “Wow. I can’t reach his face.”
LOL I read that, that was funny as hell…
I don’t care what anyone says but the Malice at the Palace is one of my favourite NBA moments ever.
We need another one.

I vividly remember O’neal throwing a running haymaker and slipping mid punch, but he still connected and dropped the dude he stuck. According to the article it was general consensus that if O’neal hadn’t have slipped, that dude might not have survived. Watching the replay, I agree.
What people don’t remember and the article failed to address is that Artest cheap shotted Wallace and Wallace got up and big faced him. Artest didn’t even try to go back at him, he basically ran away 'cause he knew he’d get murdered by Wallace, sat on the scorers table then went after the smallest guy he could find to restore some of his shattered pride. Artest is a bully and a punk, and after reading the article it’s clear he’s also out of his fucking mind.

or perhaps he has EXACTLY the personality that can TOLERATE the spotlight and fame without imploding and doing or saying stupid shit.

in another life, when I’m a super-sports agent, (and I’ve said this before) my advice to 99% of all situations they face is to “shut your fucking mouth and play ball”.
In spite of all his shortcomings, that’s EXACTLY what MJ did and with all his faults, his media image was fairly pristine.
Shut the fuck up. It will blow over.
Fucked someone not your wife and got caught? Shut the fuck up.
Want a trade? Rumors floating? Shut the fuck up, deal with it behind the scenes.
11 year olds making .10/hr to make your sneakers in a third world country? shut the fuck up and play ball.
you like to gamble? shut the fuck up and play ball.
Wife took some swings at your SUV and you crashed it into a pole in the middle of the night? Shut the fuck up and play.
The fact is, in the modern era of this media, with attendant overload, some other poor fuck will be the center of attention within the week. Some stupid politician will fuck up. There will be war. There will be an act of terrorism. Some dumb “reality star” will do something dumb. Jay-Z’s new album will come out. Give it a week, along with America’s short attention span, and unless you’ve raped a classroom of 10 year olds, the story WILL blow over.
SHUT UP AND PLAY - should be a new NIKE commercial.

You’re right. That dude would have been all the way dead if O’neal got the shot he intended. Funny in the article that the dude said “I don’t remember much from that night.” Yeah no shit.
Artest was off his rocker at that point in time.
I live on the west coast but grew up in Michigan and have always been a big Pistons fan. I grew up in the Bad Boys era, etc.
When that game tipped off I was at the gym out here, My brother and one of my buddies started texting me almost right away. Things like
“Get to a TV, Pistons-Pacers is a war right now”
I stopped at a bar on my way home, caught some more of it, and got home in time to see everything go nuts from my living room.
It was definitely a moment in time, especially as a Pistons fan where you remember where you were when it happened.
As for Derrick Rose,
Dude plays some serious ball. He acts like the game is his job and not some sort of party, and he’s clearly doing something right. Adidas just took care of him, his family, his familys’ family and beyond.
13 year deal for over 200 million?
He can be as stone faced as he needs to be. I’ll take his 22 points and 8 assists per game all day every day, especially with PG’s out there like Rondo who are now on the trading block strictly because he’s a jackass.

I work with a guy who used to manage a Saks here in Houston, and he was telling me that a few years ago when Boston was in town Rondo, Glen Davis and Kendrick Perkins came through and basically treated the joint like their dorm room. He said Davis literally lifted his leg and farted loudly and when a woman looked over at him, Rondo snapped “What you lookin’ at bitch?” I wasn’t there so don’t know if it’s true, but don’t know why my coworker would lie. As soon as Rondo’s shipped to a lesser team he’ll be exposed for what he is: a mediocre guard with NO jumper who looked a lot better than he is due to his environment.

Man, what a cocksucker.
Hopefully whoever gets him won’t be depending on him for any shots outside the paint or else they just got worse.
Meh,
90% of athletes, actors and musicians are dick heads. If you care about all the crap they do off the court, you’ll never be able to enjoy the game.

No argument here, but as Brad said that is just a cocksucker move. I’ve been around more than a few pro athletes (mostly NBA players) and all that I’ve seen can at least somewhat control themselves in public. Rondo’s just a bitch. Remember when he clotheslined Kirk Hinrich and when Hinrich went after him he ran away? Somebody’s gonna slap the black off the back of his neck one day, and it’s gonna be awesome.

If it gets to a point where his off the court bullshit is affecting your team, then I believe it matters.
Hell, dude is basically out of a job because of it. That’s a big deal.

But it’s hard to increase your rebounds per game because it isn’t entirely dependant on you to the extent that TOs are.
No, I still disagree.
Rebs are purely a function of effort at the offensive end and effort + fundamentals (ie. move your feet and box-out) at the other end. And in general, most players can ‘get after it’ more.
It’s also a function of who’s on your team. Rebounders steal rebounds from each other (particularly defensive rebounds). This is why I bet money on Kevin Love to win the rebounding title prior to LAST season, because Al Jefferson left the team and he was their only other above average rebounder, meaning Love had zero competition for defensive rebounds (other reason I bet him was increase in playing time which obviously helps).
This is also why Noah and Boozer both saw their rebounding drop when they joined forces in CHI. Neither had been playing with as good of a defensive rebounder as the other.
Gerald Wallace averaged 6rpg in 2007-2008 when a lot of minutes went to Okafor and Nazr Mohammed (their 2 best rebounders). In 2008-2009 they replaced a lot of Mohammed’s minutes with Boris Diaw who is way worse, and Wallace went up to 7.8rpg. In 2008-2009 they lost Okafor, Diaw got by far the most minutes of any big on the team, Wallace plays 41 mins/game and viola, he has a ridiculous 10rpg season. An argument can be made that he increased his rebounds from 6/game to 10/game while remaining virtually the same player. Not surprisingly, he is back to his career average this year with 6.4 rebounds/game.
Another example is Ersan Ilyasova on MIL. He was averaging about 7rpg the first month and a half, slightly above his usual, then Bogut goes out and he’s been averaging 10rpg since, the change happening essentially overnight. I could keep going all day.
You also have to know where the ball is likely to end up once it’s in the air, which is easily taught but some of it is instinctual. If you notice, Dwight Howard racks up the quietest 15 rebounds in the game because he is always positioned where the ball is going to be. All he does is jump straight up, stretch his arms out, and his wingspan+vertical jump means he is above everyone’s head and covering most of the area that the ball is likely to land in.
Effort does have a lot to do with it too - it’s just not the only thing. You have to know what to do with that effort.

The most common bonehead plays are actually ill-advised shots, since few players are careless/reckless with the ball at the NBA-level (ie. when TO’s occur, that’s because its NBA-level opponents that are causing/creating them)
But you have 4 other guys on your team + the 5 on the other team to compete with for the rebound. You can’t become Kevin Love as easy as you can minimize your TOs.
I disagree that all TOs are caused by defensive pressure. Ricky Rubio has had some plain silly TOs including a ball off his foot against the Knicks in that close game a couple of weeks ago. Lin seems to lose it a lot because he sometimes tries to bull rush his way to the paint. Not to mention the TOs you make from bad passes i.e trying to create something that’s just not there.
A lot of Lin’s TOs are a result of him playing with garbage lineups and having to do everything himself. Interested to see how much it decreases with Melo/Stoudemire/Smith in the lineup.
