My Very First Two Blenders

It seems that blended food is one of the hallmarks of weightlifters. I have never really thought that I needed a blender, because after all, protein powder mixes with a spoon.

I finally got the bright idea that I would try blending stuff.

So I went to wal-mart and got me one of those single serving travel blenders. (Like Mr. Shugart talked about). I put in some milk, peanut butter, oats, and berries for a breakfast shake. The first day, it smoked a bit. The second day the damn thing smoked and then quit working.

So I took the thing back. And I went down the blender aisle again. There were more single serving travel blenders. For 10.00. I passed, after all, mine quit working on second use. Then there was a slightly bigger blender. A “durabrand” meaning crappy wal-mart trash. I passed. Then there was the 19.99 hamilton beach blender. I thought real hard, but after all, a blender is a big investment, so the cheapest model may not be the best. I finally made my way to the big, glass (not plastic trash) 12 speed hamilton beach with some sort of WAVE system to drag the stuff on top to the bottom. All that for 30.00. I snatched it up. And this morning, I am having me a nice breakfast from it.

Barney’s breakfast-

1 serving blueberries.
3 apples
2 cups oats.
1 scoop protein powder.
2 cups milk.
Several spoonfuls of peanut butter.

This made a lot. So I may have to have two breakfasts, one after class and one before, or split it up over two days.

If any of you all have good recipes, please tell me.

Two questions- I use the cheapest peanut butter I can find. Is this ok? (limited budget, college student)

Secondly- I thought about either dumping a bit of broccoli in there, or maybe buying some spinach, and tossing a couple of leafs in. Will the other ingredients mask the taste?

I’m a poor college kid, but I still buy the all natural peanut butter. It’s not that much more expensive.

If you throw a little broccoli in there, you probably wont even taste it. Make sure you blend it good though. I imagine choking down chunks of brocoli in your shake might be gross.

Good job Barney, now if you can only match this success with the women. Try yogurt, they come in a variety of flavors and will help mask the vegetable taste. Just go light on the vegetables and your other ingredients should take care of any strong taste issues.

D

  1. I don’t recomend putting vegetables in a shake.

  2. I base my shakes with a formula like this:
    A. Liquid base: Water/Milk/Choc Carb Countdown
    B. Fruits: Banana/Pineapple/etc.
    C. Fats: Canola Oil/Extra Virgin Olive Oil/Peanut Butter
    D. Protein powder: Whey or blend
    E. Extras: No sugar added ice cream (post workout only)/flavoring (if you have plain whey)

So you use 1 selection from A as many as you’d like from B, then one from C, one from D and then whatever else.

i bought a kitchen-aid blender. i think it was about $70. it’s very strong and what i like best about it is how easy it is to clean. the top breaks down in a second and the base /buttons are all one flush piece. no nooks or grooves for crud to get into.

i was going to get a cheap blender but then i remembered that scene from kill bill where bud was making the margaritas in that shit box trailer he lived in and i thought i never want a blender that looks like that. this thing is totally worth the money.

edit/addition- here’s what i made this morning:
-4 scoops san infusion berry flavor
-1 cup blueberries
-1 tbsp greens plus
-6 oz coconut milk

545 cal
47g protein
33g carb
25g fat

i didn’t expect it but that flavor of protein mixes really well with greens plus. i find it pretty good , rather than just tolerable.

yes it will mask the taste. add anything, blenders are bomb.

Blenders are very useful. I have that same Wave blender as you just bought Barney. It works well for the price. We use it everyday, so we’ve definitely gotten our money worth.
You can also try adding cottage cheese to your shakes…the blending action gets rid of the chunks.

You can also use the blender to make oat flour if you want to bake something. Put the oats in and put it on high for a few seconds and you instantly have a flour.

Use it to mix up ingredients like cottage cheese, garlic, and other spices to make a great stuffed chicken breast.

The possibilities are endless! Congrats on the new blender!

3/4 of everything I eat comes out of either the blender or food processor. Couldn’t live without em. My blender recently OD’d and I wound up getting a smoothie machine which is essentially a really high speed blender. BTW, I agree with the guy who said to go with natural PB. Cheap PB can have high fructose corn syrup and tons of soybean oil. Or pick up a food processor next and make your own. I left a recipe in the anabolic diet recipe thread that kix ass, is way healthier than cheap commercial PB and is probably less expensive too.

Be creative! Try different fruits - mix protein flavors - add ice for thickness…
endless possibilities…

What brand and model of Blender do you guys recommend?

Welcome to the Blender Band.

Regarding veggies, for quite some time I have been adding spinach and broccoli to my shakes. I cannot tell the difference flavour-wise.

Check out my Hulk shake:

It’s my breakfast on gym days. You might not be able to make out the floating green bits of spinach, but the combination of the green and purple gives it its obvious name.

I hope there’s blueberries in there. What else in nature could possibly be that colour?

lol ok your using a friggin blender if worried about the money buy friggin peanuts the blender will turn them into butter.

By buying the cheapest there is your buying mainly corn syrup and crappy transfats.

I love blending shit. The only thing I cant add is greens plus. Everytime I add it to my drink I vommit uncontrollably. Now I take the caps.

See if you can find a “Dent & Ding” or food warehouse type store, I can usually get mine there for much cheaper and it is sooo much better.

If you want a real blender, the Vita Mix is the only way to go. I love mine. Maybe after you get out of college 'cause they’re $$$$.

Actually, the peanut butter I get has NO trans-fats. And it is made with cottonseed and rapseed oil.

Ingredients- Roasted peanuts, sugar, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (cottonseed and rapeseed) salt.

the wal-mart brand peanut butter.

It’s beetroot.

Yeah, OK; there’s blueberries in there

speaking of blueberries : i bought about 30 qts fresh this year and sealed thew w/ a seal a meal and froze them. so far it’s working awesome… especially for shakes as i can skip the ice.

Hey Barnie, try this.

2 cups milk

2 cups yoghurt

1 cup of pure pumpkin(pie filling)

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. ginger

1 tsp. nutmeg

Sweeten to taste.

You can do a ton of different fruit and berrie combos with different flavored yoghurts. The quart containers kick ass for this.
This is just one of my recent favorites.

That’s a hell of a blender. Does it come with a USB cable and a couple cd’s?
