Thanks man, I appreciate it! In the morning, I’m a little over 180. I’m probably 190 at the gym though.
roguevampire wrote:
what are you trying to accomplish? I notice you do very low reps for the most part. even top powerlifters do more reps than that. that is not the right way to train for size. for size, you need to great increase the reps. i know many guys in the gym, who lift so heavy, they barely can get a couple of reps. after chatting with them, they tell me how they want to get big. i ask them why are they doing such heavy weights then. they always say the same thing, “I thought you have to lift real heavy to get big” sorry, thats wrong. you have to lift heavy to an extent, but not for the sake of lifting heavy weight for a couple of reps.
you need to be doing a good 8-12 reps in my opinion for size. when i tell guys this, they never ever listen. they go back to lifting for their 3 reps. lol. yes, you might get a bigger bench doing that. remember, their are guys who are 170lbs that can bench over 500lbs. id much rather be huge and not as strong. but hey, some guys just want to lift alot. good for them, but if you want to actually look like you workout and not have people look at you funny when you tell them you lift weights, then you better starting lifting correctly for size.
I really do appreciate the advice and everything, but isn’t the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”? I hear compliments all the time from friends and family saying how much bigger I’ve gotten. Just last weekend I showed up to a party and my buddies said “Alright, we’re not in trouble anymore if we happen to get in a fight”. I’m not saying I’m big, far friggin’ from it, but I’m getting bigger.
Also, I do throw in higher rep sets, and I actually do all of my isolation stuff with higher reps. But, I enjoy lifting the way I do. If I enjoy doing it, and I’m getting bigger and stronger, I don’t see why I would need to change anything.

Nice job tying your PR. Cool to see that guy going hard at the end. >:D
Yeah that surprised me. I won’t lie though, I’m pretty sure myself and a few other guys have motivated that kid to work harder haha. I actually convinced him to do 5/3/1, and that was his PR set for the day.

Rogue Vampire, I recommend you read up on training volume and 5/3/1. Ashy is doing more than enough to put on size. He could obviously do 8-12 reps on everything, eat a ton, and be a huge guy who is much weaker than he looks. Judging by the bad ass strength gains he has made, plus the incredible change in body composition, I would say he seems to be doing just fine with 5/3/1. I’m sorry but it just seems like you are posting on this thread for no other reason than to try and put down someone who has been busting his ass in the gym and seeing results, and I think that’s kind of pathetic.
Ashy, keep up the good work man! It is always awesome to see someone getting results by busting their ass!
Damn, thanks man! I wasn’t sure how to respond to Rogue at first, even thought he might be a troll lol. I’m all ears when it comes to advice, but I’m going to stick with what I’m doing right now. If I have been getting stronger while dropping fat, I can’t wait to see what happens now that I’m eating lol

Im going by a statement he made. about when he walks down the street and having people know how strong he is. I wasn’t putting him down at all. maybe you misunderstand. 5/3/1 is a strength training program, simple as that. you can be a buck 70, be able to bench 600lbs, but nobody will know by looking at you how strong you are. now, to me, whats the point. lol. Id much rather have people look at me and go “holy shit is that guy jacked.” of course strength is important, but for me its 2nd. size is first.

Rogue, i’m willing to bet you’re reasonably strong though, yes? I’m not sure where Ashy started, but I know I started barely being able to bench 110lbs.
I started right out on hypertrophy rep ranges, and actually wasted a fair amount of time, because I didn’t gain a lot of strength off of it. If I would have started training in strength rep ranges, then gone to hypertrophy rep ranges after getting more of a strength base, I think I would have had a lot better results.
Ashy can bench 185 for 8-10 now, or he can bench 225 for 5, 240 for 3, and 255 for 1 (just random numbers), and get his strength up, so a year from now he can bench 275x8-10, which is likely to cause a hell of a lot more muscle growth. You need a certain base of strength before hypertrophy-style training is really effective.
Edit: Ashy-sorry for the hijack. Keep up the good work man.
Wot in the hay - is going on in here ???
The dude gave some advice and that’s it…
Take the arguments somewhere else plz - killjoys
Ashy awesome work my friend - as always.

No sweat man, strength happens to be my first love, but I am definitely able to admire the guys in the gym that are jacked and look big as hell (might even be just a little jealous.) Then I go lift way heavier than they do
I do know that either way you choose, you won’t get anywhere without hard work and determination! I’m off to do day 9 of PLP, hope there are no hard feelings and sorry for butting in on this training log ashy.
Great job Ashy - glad to see you constantly going forward. This sport isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon…keep it up
@rougevampire: I’m getting stronger, and everyone says I look bigger, so I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing until I don’t like the results I’m getting. I really do appreciate you dropping in the log, and thanks for the advice!
@blaze: That is exactly what I told a friend of mine. He has been making soem good strength gains on 5/3/1, but he said (after maybe 6 weeks on the program) “I think I’m going to switch to higher reps now so I can get big”. I told him “I strongly recommend sticking with 5/3/1 until you’re super strong. You will get bigger from doing so. High reps with lighter weight isn’t gonna do much for you”. To his response “But that’s what bodybuilders do”. So I said “Yeah they do higher reps, but with heavy ass weight because they are already strong SOBs” lol.
@undecimber: No arguing, just some friendly chat lol. Thanks, bud!
BTW, WHAT does your user name mean/where did it come from? Lol
@Ghall: Right on man!
@John: Thanks! I tell people that all the time: “Take it day by day and stay consistent. You don’t get strong over night, only strong(er)” lol. Did you happen to see my transformation thread? I actually sent you a pretty lengthy p.m. asking what you think I should do now in regards of adding some good weight but for some reason it wouldn’t send and said your user name didn’t exist . . . hm ![]()

Haha, no worries man. that was his “1 Week” so of course, he got 10 reps lol (that’s usually how it goes with your first cycle). That was 350. That guys is a lot like me in that he is built to deadlift.

350x10. Impressive; he’s way stronger than he looks.
Nice benching!
So I know you’re running 5/3/1 with your own little twist. How do you approach your assistance?
Great job as always Larry, I do 5/3/1 as well and it offers you different templates wherein you get your hypertrophy work with a BBB template etc…I always use the big compound movement as a strength gainer not as much as a hypertrophy gainer…for example on the last cycle going after a heavy single or triple, will obviously add strength and size because of the sheer amount of tension your putting on your whole posterior chain. and then the 5 back of sets of 10 for hypertrophy. You cover both gamuts IMO…
Hang in there with the benching Larry, you seem to have some long arms, much longer way to go, your hit the three plate milestone in a hop skip. I have always done a BB style of BP which has wrecked my shoulders, starting next week Im really gonna concentrate on more of a PL style, its gonna be weird so Im gonna drop the weight real low…

Nice session man!
Yeh I over-reacted a little - sometimes that stuff just bores me to tears…
Undecimber; well at the time of trying to make a sign-in name all the good ones (that I could think of) were already taken.
It’s a name of a song from a band called Ophelia. (they’re Korean - atmospheric doom/gothic metal, very different) I was listening to it at the time, trying to find new stuff.
Apparently Undecimber refers to the 13th month in a calender, comes from a latin word - that’s all I know ![]()
@xjustice: Yeah deadlift is the only lift he’s decent at though, don’t let that set foold you
lol
@Aqua: Thanks, bud. I really don’t have an actual structure for my assistance work. If I’m feeling good, I’ll just do more sets of low reps on the compound lifts. Then I’ll do as much isolation work until I feel I should call it a day. Sorry that doesn’t really answer your question lol
@MattyXL: I completely agree, man. That’s why I love 5/3/1.
Yes, my long arms completely suck for pressing haha. They do wonders for my deadlift though, so it’s not so bad. Keep working on that PL style bench. I’m starting to feel more and more comfortable with unracking the bar with my lats, using a wider grip, and keeping my lower back tight and arched. Practice makes perfect
@Undecimber: No worries man, I can’t stand all the stupid forum drama either lol. It seems like every thread, no matter what the topic, turns into some sort of heated debate.
Ah, I always wondered where the name came from haha.

Lol, thanks Aqua. I’m testing the waters to see just how much deadlifting I can get away with. I’ve hear if you’re built for a certain lift, then you are able to do it more often.

HAHA, I didn’t think you were serious for one bit. I don’t think I’ve ever done so many sets of pulling before, and I deadlifted on German Volume Training so that’s saying something lol
Lonely Florida visits Lonely Kansas =)
Going through, you make some pretty major PRs daily. Those DB rows are amazing. Stellar lifting.
Aaaannnd I love your avvie. Everytime I hurt myself, I act like Peter and spend five minutes on the floor clutching a bodypart haha
