My road to 1500

Cheers bud, Hopefully the extra volume and doing squats and deadlifts in the same day will only help for meet day!

I squat and deadlift on the same day twice a week and bench twice a week as well. You’ll be fine!

Bad session today, deadlifts felt horrible and really heavy! The single at 225kg was a struggle! I dont know if its the heat or what thats screwed me over today, but deadlifts have not felt good for a while now… I just dont feel like I’m making ground at all.

Probably a hangover from when you were crook. DL is the most sensitive lift when it comes to being a little off normal IMO.

I really hope thats the case

I wouldn’t worry too much. Sounds like what happened when I had tonsillitis a couple of months ago (two cycles pre-reset): was fine the week later, but all my pulls felt like shit.

Fingers crossed… If it doesn’t pick up soon I’ll have to take a look at my programming for it, it feels like its barely moved over the last 4 cycles!

Starting to get frustrating

Bench felt great today, very explosive off the chest! Singles done to a competition pause with heels down (the meet I’m competing in has a heels down rule, which I don’t like!) figured I’d better start getting used to it now!

127.5kg felt very comfortable, even with a proper pause which I was happy with!

Yeah, not great. Definitely a good call to get accustomed to that sooner rather than later.

Benching with my herls down didn’t actually feel too bad, but its just another thing I need to get used to! Ah well, it’ll come

Squats

Yesterday was a day off from 5/3/1, the guy I’m running the peaking cycle with was training and asked memif Id like to join him, figured I’d give a bit more volume training a whirl to see how it is!

We hit squats first, straight into deadlifts (wow that was hard) then did some deadlift stance leg press (explosive reps with lower weight) and some back raises! I was absolutely done in after all this!

Training went:

Band Pullaparts betaeen warm up sets

Squats: 4x6 @ 180kg
Deadlifts: 2x6 @ 195kg
Leg Press: 3x10 @ 160kg
Back Raises: 4x12 @ 35kg

I really enjoyed doing something a little different, hes started his peak cycle a little early and is doin a cpuple of extra higher volume weeks at the start! Sorely tempted to do the same!

Still practicing heels down Bench, feels horrible! I dont seem to be able to get any leg drive at all or keep as tight as I am with my feet tucked under me!

That sucks. I tried flat footed for a while, definitely harder to stay tight.

I’m the opposite fellas. Just switched to heels-down benching and it is working better so far. Though I get a better arch on the balls of my feet, I have a hard time forcing my heels down and producing leg drive without that feedback from the ground. My bench technique is still a work in progress haha

I need to play around with my foot positioning, dont know whether to go legs out, or legs under (just not as much), i’ll work it out eventually I hope!

For bench I love using my Squat shoes with the raised heel. I feel like this would be a great hack for you too.

Details on this please? I have guesses but they are guesses. Is this more a posterior chain movement?

I felt them in my hamstrings when I did them. Can’t go as low as a normal stance leg press, but it seems to simulate the first part of a deadlift.

I already wear my squat shoes to bench in

Perfect, where do you place your feet?

Feet same width as my deadlift stance, around 12 inches or so apart, toes slightly out. I have my feet towards the bottom of the platform.

I know I’ve heard both Andy Bolton and Ed Coan used leg press as a DL assist. I can only imagine they did something similar.
