Here’s a video I made of the gym I go to in Taipei called California Fitness. It’s a 24 Hour affiliate if that tells you anything.
It was made at 7AM last Monday…I just wanted to show how the kind of preening weenies there leave the place a mess.
By the way…I make a comment about the 28b lbs on the bench and nobody being able to lift it…I mean nobody I’ve ever seen at that gym in particular.
Wouldn’t that create some sort of liability on the gym owner’s part?
I can easily see someone getting injured by tripping over some dumbbells.
I’ve seen it happen. I was at a 24 Hour a while back where there were dumbbells laying everywhere. This guy is doing dumbbell bench press. When he finished his set, he tried to walk the weights back to the rack, but his foot caught on a random dumbbell sitting in front of the rack and does a header into it. Gave himself a pretty good cut on his forehead. He wasn’t too happy after either.
A quick search of “gym” in the same paragraph as “weight!” in the same paragraph as “negligen!” found only one case that seems to directly address another patron’s failure to re-rack weights.
The case I found wasn’t a final decision, but it looked like the gym was arguing that by posting “please re-rack your weights” signs it couldn’t be liable for its patrons’ failure to do so.
The woman who failed to re-rack her weights was a co-defendant.
I would argue that where a gym regularly acts to clean things up, and there is a DB on the floor that causes a trip and injury, there is no negligence - because the gym reguarly tries to keep things safe and is doing a reasonable thing, they shouldn’t be liable for an unusual and unanticipated situation.
This gym looks like a suit waiting to happen. It won’t happen unless someone is severely injured and the insurance company steps in, because no one wants to deal with the financial and time costs of one guy v. GloboGym.
It’s only common sense and courtesy to put away your dumbbells once you are finished with them. My gym also gives free towels for you to use during your workout, those also get left all over the place.

See, that’s what I’m thinking off.
At the OP’s gym you have a chance of tripping over a dumbbell only to have a vertically placed barbell smash down on your head.
The people at my gym almost always re-rack weights. I usually spend time between sets organizing them though. Drives me nuts when you have a 25 pound weight placed in front of a 10 pound weight. But at least they are racked.

My parents always taught me to pick up after myself. That doesn’t just mean at home. I don’t get why people are suddenly lazy about it at the gym. If you’re ‘strong’ enough to take those 30 lb dumbbells away from the rack, you should have the strength to return them. I don’t see what’s so hard about that.
My other pet peeve is when people don’t return the dumbbells back to the clearly numbered spot for them on the rack and just pick any open spot. “Let me just put these 25-pounders on the open spot where it says ‘90’. I’m sure that won’t inconvenience anyone.”

I love the barbell placed vertically, that made me chuckle. I only wonder what it looked like when they were doing the workout…
I imagine they were doing upright rows by gripping onto the top weight plates. LOL
I have to take videos or pictures of the Premier Fitness where I work out. Nard’s gym is a pristine tribute to OCD by comparison. I can’t do justice to it by description. Suffice it to say that when I was there on Saturday, there were three buckets grouped together near the rack to catch to water from the roof leak. I like to think of them as the lap pool.
No one puts anything away. The floor is strewn with bars and dumb bells. I very early on learned that a loaded bar didn’t mean equipment is in use. If there isn’t an ass on the bench or a body in the rack, I strip the bar and use it. I’ve never had anyone say they were using the equipment. I also managed to corral my ‘mom’ urges to tidy up.
On the bright side, I can roll my entire body in chalk and no one will say anything.
A lot of times when I worked there it was from a retarded sense of entitlement. Many times when approaching the idiots even in a cordial manner you get the “that’s what I pay my membership dues”.
No, you pay you’re dues for access to the gym. The douchebag comments you receive…those we throw in for free.
Hands down the worst violators of these gym policies are not the kids like you would think (they just take up space on equipment or try to sneak their friend in) but the thirty-something weekend warrior types. They’re the absolute worst when it comes to picking up, wiping up their sty of pig sweat, or ponying up to any woman with a pulse spewing their smarmy pick up banter.
