My Idea on Home Made Farmers Walk


I was walking to my car this evening with a couple water bottles like the one pictured.
these are 40 pounds filled,so

I had an Idea of taking the old ones I have that smell and filling them with play sand for a makshift farmers walk.

Weak point is the handle,however the handle gets filled with sand as well so it would not be weak enough to break.

And if I want heavier ones,fill with cement.
I can put atleast 2 bags in there and thats 80 pounds each bag.
after water its about 85-90 pounds each bag.
I can guess,I can put 200 pounds cememnt in one bottle or there abouts.

Ideas?
Am I wasting my time?
Anyone else do this?

It seems like a hassle for something that won’t be that heavy or real confortable to walk with. For $90 you can have your own adjustable farmers handles.

Im just looking for ways to train at home now,with nothing because I got kicked out of my gym today :frowning: thanks for the link Ill look into that.
Have to save for them though.

Damn Nich. How come you got kicked out?

I’ve used those water bottles filled with gravel - You can get quite a bit of weight in them although nothing amazing. They hold together well too.

Now, if you can combine the bottles with a good steep hill you got yourself a workout. I’d wear gloves though as any ridges on the plastic handles will cut into you big time.

Having been training at home for years, I just use heavy dumbbells and five floors of stairs.

Depends why you want them

  • If you’re competing, they just wont be enough, get the real farmers handles

  • if you’re trying to train grip, I would just do dbl overhand deadlifts, dbl overhand shrugs, plate pinches, hex head db hold if you can get em, etc

-if youre just doing it for fun and a change of pace, go for it, but I honestly believe that they’ll get easy for you very quickly - unless your try to do a 200’ walk with turns or somehting, maybe

I have 2.5 acres of semi-level desert land in my yard to run and play in so its not a hill but its uneven dirt.and all I have at home is 170 pound standard set and the bar is already bent from me dropping it so I have to find something untill I can get the money up for a home gym.

and to why I was kicked out.

I go to a local chain.
in the workout package they offer a free session with a trainer each month,measurments pictures and such.
I have refused every month so far but the manager insisted I go in and get measured its good to track my progress.

I told her I track my own and I have no need for a trainer and she mentioned it was a requirent liability reasons.

So I went in and got measured.
where the trainer that was measuring me looked at the card measured me again,said “WOW,ill be right back”
I went to start my work out I didnt have time for nonsense.

the trainer and the manager pulled me into an office,the manager asked if she could measure me.She then compared my starting pictures from January and how I looked now.

she did all that and sat down to talk to me.
She told me that she is going to have to ask me to submit a drug test.
I was like drug test what for thats none of your bussiness!
I am shocked and appauled that you would ask me to do such a thing.

She told me there is no way that my body fat could go down that much,and my arm and leg mesurments could go up the way they did ,with NO WEIGHT GAIN without the use of some sort of drugs.

I told her she was full of shit I went from doing nothing to eating alot and working hard and it was newbie gains.
She of course didnt believe me and told me I had a choice I could take the test or not come back and I will be refunded my monthly dues for the time I missed.
Because if I had nothing to hide then I would submit to the confidential test.I told her it was infringing my right to privacy and tried making a big deal,but of course I cant take a drug test,you kidding me?

She said they did not want people there that did drugs because it would harm her other patrons that are there to not get so big and when people see my body changing so fast the ywould get discouraged and stop coming.

Also my work outs intimidated some of the customers and they have had complaints last several weeks about “the hefty guy that can do pull ups” I mean its un natural.
Bunch of BS I swear.
Atleast I will have a couple hundred dollars back in a few weeks.

If I saw some dude getting great progress at my gym I’d be stoked and ask him questions. How in the hell would that be discouraging? It would be motivating!

So when someone is succeeding they kick them out because they want a gym full of failures?

It would have been funny to do the test and prove them all wrong though. I’m assuming you don’t juice of course.

See,my whole thing though is what I do in receration is no ones bussiness unless i make it their bussiness.
someone assuming I am doing something and then asking me to prove I am not is out of the question.

I do not lift monster weights,I lift my body weight and I rack pull 2 times my body weight.
I do not scream and grunt I am very quiet and reserved I am nice and polite and engage in stupid conversations with old people in the steam room.

some people said they watched me as I ran,I am overweight and because I can jog for longer than they can it means I am on something.
Or that I can do a pull up which not many there other than the obviously jacked kids can do.

It is a money thing if the “Sliver Shoes walking club” is not there then they get less revenue.

This sounds completely absurd… I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt though and assume this is the real reason you got kicked out.

I didnt notice anything at sign up.
But she pointed out the fine print about them having a 0 tolerance drug policy and they can at will search the lockers,and personal belongings of people on the grounds
And also they reserve the right to refuse the use of the gym to anyone at any time for any reason.
they can also ask to test you if you seem to be under the infulance,this is for public safety.

Sounds like you need to find a new gym anyway. I don’t think the goals of the average trainee at that gym align with those of a T-Nation member.

I need to find a powerlifting gym in my area.
it was a cheap gym but I guess you really get what you pay for.
I am thinking of just getting my own stuff up.

Completely and totally outrageous. The line that they wanted a trainer to “track your progress” for “liability reasons” is total BS, its a sales tool. The very notion that tehy would even pay for a drug test - I question that very strongly, I would be surprised if it werent a total bluff.

i would say that it might be worth talking to a lawyer, but who cares, you dont want to lift there anyway … as long as youre getting a full refund that is, if not I’d take em to small claims. I dont care what right they have to search your locker, they cant search your body

I am sure it was a bluff.Eiher that or it would have been a test for street drugs,alcohol,THC,Coke that kind of thing because a steroid test is really expensive.

I know I was lied to and I could have taken a test,if they gave me one and come up clean,thats not the point.

If I made a mountain out of a mole hill,or if they lied is all trivial compared to the fact that they would have the balls to ask me to take a test for any reason.
for now I am just going to find other ways to work out and not worry about stuff that dosent matter,all that matters to me is making my next goal and I dont need a fancy,well lit,air conditioned gym to do that.

I would have submitted to the drugs test just to prove that woman wrong, as long as they paid for it.

I think a cooler, no pun intended, exercise would be to try and throw the container as far or as high as possible. You could use different volumes and different substances for progression.
