My HCl Experience - Heartburn?

First off, let me say I NEVER get heartburn. Before today I wasn’t even sure what it was. I’m 25 years old, been skinny my whole life and eat fairly healthy. To clarify what I mean by “fairly healty”, I eat about 75% in accordance to Berardi’s Precision Nutrition plan (I have to get a soda in every now and then - I drink maybe 4 or 5 a week).

I just got the Digestzymes today, and popped one pill (200 mg) with a bowl of Steak Gumbo from Qdoba extra steak (which I eat at least once or twice a week and NEVER get heartburn, it’s not a spicy item). I’ve got heartburn like crazy! I mean, this is some serious discomfort. I’m feeling a slight burning sensation at the bottom of my throat, burping is hard and I feel like I’m going to burp up a little of my lunch. That’s heartburn right?

I’m posting this because I was really expecting to have to take like 4 or 5 of these before feeling anything. Especially after following Chris Shugart’s thread and he got to seven without feeling anything. I’m not in super awesome shape or anything, I’m just the average ski/climbing bum in Colorado, I lift 2-3 times a week, 6’3" and weigh 190. I will say that I’ve lived a pretty stress free life, I just don’t get too caught up when bad things come my way.

I’m curious if anyone else felt heartburn after taking only one pill. Anybody want to buy the rest of this bottle off me?

Sounds like the pill got lodged in your esophagus. Then the gel cap started the dissolve, exposing the contents of the pill. I had that happen once with ALA. That’s not good, obviously.

When taking ALA or other supplements that have a high pH, I wash them down with at least 16 oz. of water.

If this is betaine hydrochloride it may mean your body makes enough on it’s own and the pill constitutes excess which is the classic cause of heartburn.

Well, that’s what I’m assuming, I’m just really surprised because Poliquin says in his article that:

“At our Phoenix center alone we’ve been doing over 250 tests a year for the last four years, and in that time I’ve never seen one person not need at least one capsule; the average person tested could feel it after five capsules.”

I just didn’t figure myself to have such a good level of HCl after reading that article. Poliquin sounds like a trustworthy guy and his article made it sound like this is a common problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, I never thought about that. I think I’ll wait another day and try it again with a meal and at least 24oz water.

I guess if I get heartburn again, that means my HCl levels are fine.
