Thanks, overall very happy with the meet. 9 for 9 was great, but it did leave me wondering how much I had left in the tank.
My thoughts for opening heavier were just that I’m not used to making such large jumps in weights during my training. Obviously it’s a great lesson learned, and an approach I will take in my training as I crank up for the next meet.
As for squat, I had a knee issue for a while, where if I squatted, I would have knee pain for about a week every time I knelt down. Unfortunately I just plain stopped squatting. Over the past 8 months I found I was able to do heavier step ups, bulgarian split squats, weighted lunges, etc. Eventually, I could also go deep on hack squats without pain, so I added regular squats back in to my program, along with front squats.
Since I didn’t know I was going to be squatting, I hadn’t trained any heavier than 6 rep sets, and really didn’t have a feeling for how low competition depth was. My plan is to look for another meet in about 4 to 6 months and shoot for a 450 squat, 360 bench and 560 deadlift.
One last note, even though everyone told me this ahead of time, I was still very surprised to see how friendly and welcoming everyone was at the meet. From finding rack heights, to planning opening lifts, warmups, meal timing, etc. I even had to borrow a singlet from someone because mine never arrived in the mail!
I’m going to try to attach a couple of clips of my Squat and DL. Unfortunately we were apparently new to using a camera, so we only recorded about half of my final bench and deadlift attempts. Ah well, next time.
I’ll attach the 475DL, as you can see, It was very easy, but you can tell that I relied more on back strength (possibly due to not squatting?) 525 wasn’t that much harder, but the video is terrible.
Edit: Still working on uploading videos. Apparently my uploading skills match my video taking skills!
Congrats on doing so well at your first meet!! I have my first meet coming up in a few weeks so it’s been great reading this thread, there’s some solid advice there. Only hope I can match your 9 for 9 with some PRs on the day too Great job.

Thanks g’em. Good luck on your meet. The advice really was helpful for me. Let us know how you do on your first one. If it’s anything like your calling out, I’m sure it will be a success!

I can just see your face now when they were like, “what is your open lift for squat?” Your like ummmm there is a squat portion…

Those were my exact words…The meet director just kind of chuckled at me.[quote]
Anyway man great lifts. That dead is monster. Haven’t seen you throw that weight up in the gym. Just breaking 1200 total is awesome.
How was the warm-up pit? Find everything you needed?

The meet was at a gym, so the actual competition was in one of their racquetball courts. They let us use the regular gym to warm up, so there were plenty of benches and squat racks for warm ups.
Everyone took turns as the weight increased on the warmups, so it was fairly organized. They had plenty of chalk in the warmup area as well as on the platform.
Overall, it ran very smoothly. Quite professional.
Thanks. 1200 was a nice mark to break as an opener. I feel like I could have gotten 1300 with a little more planning…There’s always next time.
