I hope you realize how much more developed the Professor is than you.
Shame his profile is now private.
He’s a very smart and large individual.
Maybe you should just put your foot in your mouth and realize that you don’t know EVERYTHING just yet.
And you can get fiberous juice, get it with pulp.
I don’t think we are talking about juicy juice here.
Come down to Florida, natural fresh squeezed juice is in abundance, afterall we have oranges on our license plates.

You tried to make them think! Unforgivable.

This is one of the few times I’ve seen someone defend out beloved state…
And exactly, like the Professor, I have no problem with 100% juices, and neither should anyone else. Well, except for prune juice. That stuff tastes like garbage.
Good for pooping though.
This is true. But I use raisin bran for that, which isn’t even on the same block as prune juice when it comes to awful taste.

No offense, but why would you listen to someone with limited personal development on anything concerning what to eat? We should all stop drinking fruit juice for fear of fat gain?
If you change everything you are doing that easily because of some off the wall statement by an author, you deserve what you get. This is honestly the dumbest thread I’ve seen in a while.
No offense taken, Professor. For clarification, I’m not intending to remove fruit juices from my diet. I just never saw OJ as “water with sugar and vitamin C,” so when I heard it put that way, I asked why. I made the “rethink my life” statement because I missed something that I thought was, upon realization, pretty clear had I look at it properly.
And as for my oranges-to-OJ consumption remarks, that remains just a fact of economics. My dad gives me a ton of naval oranges every time I see him, which are free to me. Orange juice costs money (but I do buy every now and then). Thusly, I eat more oranges than I drink OJ for monetary reasons.
Lastly, Professor, no need to think me a fool or dumbass or what have you. This was simply me inquiring about something I was ignorant about.
My response had little to do with you personally and much more to do with every beginner who was going to log on and now think they should avoid fruit juice because someone wrote that it makes you fat.
This is why I keep mentioning pictures. I guarantee most of the people pushing ideas like this are also some of the least developed. I can get away with eating more because I am carrying more muscle mass and I train regularly, meaning my body needs more calories than some guy who has been sitting at the exact same weight for years on end. That means I don’t need to worry about whether orange juice is going to make me fat by itself and most people training hard in the gym to actually gain some muscle mass shouldn’t be concerned either.
It helps to look at WHO is giving what advice.
Are you serious? Orange juice, or any fruit juice for that matter, is pretty much useless in terms of any body composition or performance goal.
-
The processing of the juices kills all the phytonutrients and leaves you with a little bit of vitamins.
-
Its loaded with “useless” fructose and contains no fiber.
-
It does little to curve the appetite.
-
It is more easily absorbed (being a liquid with no fiber) and requires less effort by your body to process, yielding no TEF caloric expenditure.
Commercial orange juice is inferior to water and green tea in every single aspect. It has no advantages, and is just an excuse to load up on simple carbs guilt-free. If you want some healthy OJ, grind it up yourself. Stop living in 1980 and wake the fuck up.
Right. What exactly do people like you eat and how much progress have you made? With orange juice and milk off the list, why not simply drink water and eat tofu?
Here’s a tip, that “everything in moderation” line is one you should begin to take seriously.
The least developed of you seem to be the MOST concerned about every single detail of every food item you eat. If you honestly believe the human body is so fragile that a glass of orange juice causes DAMAGE in the body of a healthy individual, you don’t have a clue.
Prof, hope you weren’t attacking me.
No where did I say OJ was the devil (the juice that is
), I simply stated it was mainly just sugar, and too many people think juice is “healthy” (which most people in this country don’t need to load up on a sugary drink).
Like I said, if BF levels aren’t a concern there’s no real big deal about it.

My response wasn’t based on just what you said but how it will be taken by others. Regardless of what you (or any others) meant, there are going to be several people who get the message that they should avoid orange juice for some strange reason.
Most of the people reading the threads in this section aren’t advanced lifters who already have a firm understanding of how to eat. Most are beginners who are getting these extreme ideas of food avoidance from individuals who no doubt wouldn’t stand out in a crowd of starving vegans.
Therefore, regardless of who stated it, my response is still the same.
People need to pay attention to WHO is making what statements.

I eat clean according to JBs 10 habits and I stay away from heavily processed foods such as fruit juices. My goals are not to be developed as much as they are to perform at my best, all the time. Having large biceps accomplishes nothing if you can’t choke someone with them.
Our goals are far different, and I understand in your case the need for more calories in order to get larger, but there are far better choices than sugar water.
As for OJ causing damage, it really depends on how you define damage. If you define damage as something that will negatively impact health, then the answer is no. It can, however contribute to minimal gains in fat due to it being an empty, insulin spiking carbohydrate source. Unless your liver glycogen is depleted, then it serves no purpose.
Milk, on the other hand, is far higher in protein and will do much less in terms of spiking insulin. For the purpose of bulking it is far superior than any juice.
Regardless of what you feel about orange juice, Im sure that you can agree with me on that everything we consume can lead to either a positive or negative change in body composition. Even if the change is so minimal that you cannot notice or even measure, it is there.
Being such a “developed” individual, Im sure you require much more calories than your standard endomorph who trains 3 days a week, but just because you haven’t experienced negative changes in body composition due to juice consumption, doesn’t necessarily mean someone else will not.
When it comes down to it, there are only 2 good choices in terms of liquid, and those are water and green tea. Calories should come from whole food sources. I’ve stated several reasons why orange juice is a sub optimal choice for a beverage, yet you have offered no reasons as to why it is not. Because you are “developed” is not a valid response.
Please tell me: how is processed orange juice a superior beverage to water?

I’d have thought that big biceps would impair choking as you wouldn’t be able to get as tight a hold on someone, however, it does accomplish having big biceps, which is excellent.
What? Is your body so fragile that some juice will reduce your “athleticism” or impair your ability to choke someone?

Diet coke is also nice, as is Coke Zero. I have been known to drink either from time to time and as yet I have not died.

It tastes deeeeelicious.
Most of your post was addressed to the Prof, but it was so insane that I felt the need to reply. I didn’t mean to offend but I was enjoying a cool glass of OJ at the time and I couldn’t help myself.
Damn, where have my abs gone.
I going to have to ring in that SonnabenD raises some valid points. Professor X isn’t necessarily wrong, but I think he is missing the point that the ninja is trying to make.
Point is most OJ people buy in stores is pasteurized and processed to the point that it contains little phytonutrients, bioflavonoids, and pulp. What is left is fructose water, which is high-class high-fructose corn syrup.
No one would tell you to drink Coca-Cola if they fortified it with a little Vitamin C, D, and crappy ass Calcium Carbonate.
Obviously a glass here and there is not going to kill you. Some people drink 2 liters of Cola a day and are just fine, but that doesn’t mean it is good for you. There are a plethora of other ways to get in excess calories if that is your goal.
I eat 2-5 oranges a day and 1-2 grapefruits a day, but think pasteurized OJ later fortified with low-grade vitamins is a waste of money and my insulin.
SonnabenD wrote:

Well, orange juice has vitamins, minerals, fiber, etc, all in addition to water.
However, you can’t compare OJ to water, as one is a fruit juice and the other, well, isn’t. But to say that OJ is bad is pretty senseless, given that the health benefits far exceed the possibility of negative consequences.
Joe D. wrote:

Your too, huh?
SonnabenD, you’ve missed the point. The point is that orange juice is absolutely fine in moderation, as with most foods.
I could go around saying that a PWO drink is bad for your diet, which is bullshit, unless you are drinking 8 servings of Surge after an hour long session.

What Professor and I are saying is that there is nothing wrong with 100% pure fruit juice. I buy Florida’s Natural (or whatever the state brand is), just pure orange juice, sometimes with the pulp removed, depending on how I feel at the time of purchase.
Nothing wrong with that.

Translation: I am sick (read: bad cold), and I wanted your opinions on whether there was anything I could do in terms of nutrition to help me get better.
No.
From my experience, no matter WHAT you eat or don’t eat (or drink), you will have a cold for 10 days or whatever the typical duration is.
Rest doesn’t shorten the cold either, but it does reduce the chance of developing a secondary infection following the cold.
I have read that zinc lozenges can shorten the duration of symptoms, but I have not tried it.
