My App Created for Beyond 531, Copyright Issue?

Yes I am nearly done to the level for ME to use it. Its a whole different thing altogether to publish an app. Also I never ever said charging for it if I did. Furthermore I have been totally open about it asking and wanting Jims nod etc. If he says no them no worries Ill just keep it for own workouts.

Finally I will build and automate this for my own use irrespective just like someone building their own spreadsheet.

It is a copyright issue. My name, the contents of each book, ā€œ5/3/1ā€, etc are all copyrighted. We will go after every app and do what is necessary to go after max amount of $$$ allowed.

By the way, please stop with the ā€œfree app = OKā€. That is so childish and insulting; one can still make money on a free app and this is very, very simple business knowledge.

You can do what you want, but there will be consequences.

Hi Jim thanks for taking the time to respond. That clears everything up. As said I wouldnt publish anything without out an ok.

Ill just keep it for my own use. One thing if you are interested in what I have desgined just drop me a mail.

Thanks again.

Well, I guess that cleared everything up. Despite the way this thread panned out, I would definitely love to see an app for 5/3/1 for hargainers

Jim, if you are going after these, there are 5 in the Android store, one of them is 5 bucks and apparently has 5k downloads, by ā€œsarasoft.ā€ The rest are free, but like you said, still a major problem there too. Hope you can take them to the cleaners, especially the top one, pretty sickening. I flagged them as ā€œinappropriate due to IP infringementā€ but I doubt that does much.

I tried couple of the apps in the past and all of them seemed to suck balls. I own the books so I thought they could be utilized as tools but I was wrong. It would definitely be interesting to see an official app for the training system. That would clear so damn many misunderstandings and misinterpretations when you just picked the options and boom, you’d have an official program sheet with pre-calculated work loads from your personal profile.

As I said Id be happy to share with Jim what my design is. Maybe he will contact me. I agree an app makes sense, and all this is possible. Just takes a good design.

Damn, not once did you mention allocating royalities/profit share to Jim (and in his favour %wise). Or even how it could add value to his 5/3/1 brand and business, or some tenuous upsell potential etc.

I presume you are very young but you need to learn some fundamentals or youre foing to fall flat on your face in business with this approach

No youre right I didnt, I started by saying I have been working on an app that Im going to start using/testing myself today. That might be useful for others and wanted to find out about implications of putting it up for others to download. Never did I talk about making money. To publish a spreadsheet online to share and download is easy you link it. An app is different you HAVE to use the app store so people, like your goodself can download it. Also apps can be totally free. A free app has no cost to download, no adverts and no in app purchases, there are such things as community apps. Also I asked as I had seen other apps up there and didnt know if Jim had ok’d those or was affiliated in anyway with those. Which obviously he isnt. I was as transparent as could be.

Anyway I think a 531 app is a great thing, we all know the complexities of this training methodology with all its conatations and loose rules, this is something a good app could help remove the confusion when trying to build a workout cycle etc.

Said no-one who read the books ever. Seriously, one of the easiest systems to understand when you read the books.

Stop trying to cover your arse. You fucked up. Own it, learn from it and move on.

I am quite interested in the app idea. I would certainly use it and consider paying for a good product. I appreciate the opportunity to have input on the forum.
At 57 with 31 years in the private workforce , I’m not offended by the post , but rather see how much interest there is in a good app.
Why isnt there an app? A very popular product, that lends to a good usable application for the information.
I own all the 531 books in the paper form, and have and still do reference them frequently. I would encourage the development of such a product. If all the information was so easy to understand this forum would have much less and better questions.

I imagine because people would just buy the app rather than the books. It would result in less money spent on the books and more people screwing up the program, which would tarnish the rep of the program itself.

People are already just using unauthorized apps and webpages to ā€œrun 5/3/1ā€, and consequently there are a lot of people jacking it up because they never actually read the book.

Those are solid examples. I didn’t think of an underground or less than legal approach.
The books are just so reasonably priced for what you get. I don’t know why you would short change your training that way. People spend way more money on garbage for their training.
There will always be imitation products. A good app , in my opinion would be a nice addition.
So be it. Enjoy your training.

I actually found out about 5/3/1 through some links one day while pretending to pay attention at a meeting. You know the meetings where someone just reads a PowerPoint word-for-word while it’s on the screen, and the information is stuff everyone knows anyway because it is the same PowerPoint they use every year.

Anyway, I found the templates online for free, pretty easily. Only after a few weeks did I realize that there were actual books (which I bought).

I get that the general ideas behind 5/3/1, or any popular program, will be spread around through word of mouth or Internet forums. Just like the general plot if a movie might be known to people that haven’t seen it. That said, any time something comes out like that, it is taking a possible sale away from the creator.

It’s probably because I’m 44 but the idee of an app is for me totaly stupid and useless.
If somebody want to apply the 531 principles he should first read the books and then, if something’s still not clear, he should read forums. We have the chance that the author is ready to answer every kind of questions and drive us to the point where we can make progress.

An app is just the easyest way to think you know what to do and then to fuck the programm and your progress.
Sorry, but a book 531, a pencil and a shit of paper is all that we need … with barbell and discipline.

Good points.

Also, Wendler might think that reading a book is something that does only good for the modern people (and he is quite right).
