Must-See America?

So, I was going to spend the summer in Hong Kong and Thailand, per my love of travel. Then, the tranny decided to drop out of my car.

I was left with the choice of getting another crappy car and having enough money left to go, or getting a fairly new car.

I decided to get a new(ish) car. No more Hong Kong money.

I figured with a new car, this would be a good summer to take a road trip and see my own country.

Since you are all from all-over, does anyone have suggestions of ‘must-see’?

I have the standard things like Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Rushmore, etc. I’m going to climb Longs Peak in Colorado, and there’s a ‘haunted’ forest there that I’m going to hike thru for the heck of it. I’m driving parts of Route 66, going to Snake Alley, and…?

Any other places? I’m not interested in theme parks, and I’m 20, so casinos are out of the question.

Anywhere at all? Beaches, forests, mountain trails, unique restaurants, clubs, stores, anything at all. If you think it’s worth visiting, I’d like to hear about it.

However, the more unusual, less touristy, the better.

Thanks

Vancouver Island, Canada, If you like to hike we have the West Coast Trail, The Carmana Valley, Dela falls 440m water fall, Long Beach. All these places are close to each other, but still worlds apart. More than happy to expand on these place if you’re interested. You’ll love use Canadians. What ever you do, have tons of fun.

Glacier Park, Montana

tuscaloosa, AL. come to UA and party with me on the strip

Northern New England. In my opinion, Vermont is one of the prettiest places in the world. Coastal Maine is extraordinarily beautiful, too.

Lots of good hiking both places.

Big Bend National Park
Enchanted Rock
Austin

all in Texas

if you are coming from the west, you can hit them in that order. Keep on going to New Orleans while you are at it.

If you end up anywhere near Northern California, be sure to check out Lake Tahoe.

I’d also list the Grand Canyon as one of the more stunning things I’ve ever seen.

Thanks for the locations everyone! I’m marking them all down.

Red Rock Canyon area in Utah. I drove through it a couple years ago and damn near pooped me pants it was so breathtaking. I recommend to everyone as it is the prettiest area I have ever seen.

Austin…if you go, see if you can plan it so you can hit the Austin City Limits Festival while you’re there. Although it’s in September, I think. Well worth stretching summer for, though!

Even without the festival Austin is a great city, as well as beautiful. You can’t go wrong stopping there.

While you’re in Texas, better add San Antonio to your list.

I made it to ACL Fest the first 3 years, but missed it last year. If anyone is even remotely near Texas in September I highly suggest you take advantage of this concert weekend. 140+ bands. 3 days. 8-9 stages. Everything from Big names (Cold Play) to old timers (Buddy Guy) to Newcomers (Franz Ferdinand) to Local Favorites (South Austin Jug Band) all in one location.

Plus you’re just a stone’s throw away from Barton Springs/Barton Springs Pool a truly unique place to chill out on a hot day.

Just down the road are some favorite local restauarnts like Chuy’s and Threadgills.

That’s it for my shameless Austin, TX plug.

or not…

You can always kill a day on Lake Travis, Lake Austin, or hiking around Town Lake.

March will have the Travis County Livestock show and Rodeo. And South by Southwest Film Festival.

New Orleans. Jazz festival is in June I think. Bourbon Street is Bourbon Street year round, doesn’t really matter when you show up. Jackson Square is always worth a visit. 3 words: Café du Monde.

I always have fun in Texas: Austin & San Antonio, Vegas for the hell of it, Colorado is nice too.

Cafe Du Monde…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…if you’re in that area, drive out to Baton Rouge and go to the bar Chimes by the LSU campus.

Maine coast in September.
Northern Idaho.
Columbia River Valley.

Not Iowa.

Montana is gorgeous. Driving on highway 1 (coastal highway) in Northern California is awesome, and the coastline is very dramatic.

All these comments about Texas are getting me excited. I’m headed there this coming weekend to do some graduate school auditions (classical guitar). Going to the Dallas area, then I’ll be back later in February to Austin.

Pete’s Place and Choc 1919 beer in Krebs, Ok.

All of the above are good, but maybe South Beach Miami? I ain’t ever been there but a lot of my boys and coaches have and I hear great…great things.
