Muscle Milk Before Bed?

Why does Metabolic Drive have such low protein content? 2 scoops is only 27 grams? What do you guys think about this one - Matrix 5.0
Two scoops of Metabolic Drive Super Protein Shake contains 40g protein.

Where did you get your information?

Nevermind i was looking at the wrong product. So it comes out to about 50$ a month, kind of pricey, could i use that Syntrax Matrix 5.0 stuff? seems legit when compared to Metabolic Drive.

I doubt it has much micellar casein in it for $28/5 pounds. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. I would guess from looking at the ingredients it is probably 99% whey concentrate with a sprinkling of the high quality proteins.

Any alternatives? Can i just put 2 scoops whey protein in 12oz of milk? I’m a college student and cannot afford $50 a month just for a night time protein.

Jeff, Metabolic Drive isn’t straight whey. Read the product info and then decide if it’s worth the price. It’s an amazing protein blend, with some of the best flavors you’ll find. But if you just want cheap barely palletable protein, lowest cost is probably a winning strategy. As far as I’m concerned, Metabolic Drive is very reasonably priced for what you get.

I’ve been using Metabolic Drive pre-bed for a while. For some reason that I don’t really remember, I switched to a 100% whey blend for a few nights and woke up earlier than usual every morning because I was hungry. I switched back to Metabolic Drive and haven’t had that problem since. Just thought I’d share.

I know there was mention of Biotest producing a lower cost protein, but I am not sure of the status of that. Metabolic Drive is my first choice, and is a great price for the quality. If you need something cheaper I would go with a reputable brand and try to find a blend of protein sources.

Unless you get milk for free from a dining hall you have to factor that into the cost. I remember the college days and understand the lack of funds. I would say you should be able to find a protein powder that fits your needs if you shop around online.

Pfft. I afforded it in college. I suggest earning extra money by giving handjobs at the Greyhound station nearby.

wait, WHY can’t you just mix it with water…?

I’ll restate what I said earlier. Muscle Milk isn’t bad as a night time protein if you want to bulk. Add the oil and milk, and you’ve got a good, high calorie, high fat shake that will take you through the night.

Is a good casin protein like Metabolic Drive better at night? If your bulking, probably. If your cutting, definitely. That’s kind of why it costs more.

Nighttime is tricky. You’ve got to burn protein for 7 or 8 hours, so you either need lots of cals or good protein. You can choose and let your body decide.

FYI - when I burn through some of the other stuff I’ve got, I’ll probably go only the Metabolic Drive route for nighttime protein. It is worth the health benefit for me for $70 a month.

depending on your goals, a pre-bedtime meal may not be the optimal idea in the first place

I always thought a bed time meal was neccesary? In what conditions wouldnt you recommend it?
I totatlly agree. I think you should always have a pre-bed meal. If you’re cutting just make it a P+F one and make sure it fits your total calorie goals for the day.

So if i were to use 2 scoops Metabolic Drive, would you suggest flax or canola oil? which would be better for night time? Also how much should i put in? thanks

I’d rather add olive oil, flax seed oil, coconut oil, or Enova.

You’ll have to take into account you daily goal for fat intake in order to determine how much to add. There isn’t necessarily an upper limit. You just need to determine what you need.
My pre-bed meal is usually Metabolic Drive and olive oil. Sometimes I add some cottage cheese to it. Pre-bed is the time when Metabolic Drive is most useful. During the day it’s questionable that you NEED micellar casein if you’re eating frequently. But I do think that before bed it has true benefits that trump whole foods and other supplemental proteins. It’s worth it.

I have noticed this as well.

Canola is way overrated. It’s a marginal healthy oil at the very best. It only has half of the monounsaturated fats that olive oil has. It’s still highly polyunsaturated like your common vegetable oils. Plus it is highly refined like all other supermarket oils (except extra vigrin olive oil). I wouldn’t consume it on purpose. FIsh oils, flax oil and extra virgin olive oil are by far the healthiest oils available.

Unless they changed things recently, the fats in Muscle Milk are MCT’s, which are fast-burning just like carbs.
Well of the 3 fats listed, MCTs are listed last so for all we know there could be just a “sprinkle” of MCTs in there. Canola oil is the first fat and vegetable oil is second. In other words, Muscle Milk has a fairly awful fat profile.

True since WPC is the first ingredient, for the cheap price I would assume WPC makes up 98% of the protein.

Yes the cheapest alternative would be cheap WPC in milk.

However, it’s not all about quantity. Quality is much more important. Personally I’d rather had 20g of a super quality protein like Metabolic Drive than 40-50g of cheap Whey Pro Concentrate. So consider that into your cost equation.

Personally, I won’t touch Muscle Milk. On other forums, I heard a lot of hooting about how great it tastes, so I ordered a bucket a LONG time ago to try it out. Cookies n Creme tasted like someone ate a few oreos with milk and then puked it up. Yummy. I can buy a pack of oreos, feed it to my dog, and get that same great taste for $3!
Yep, the Cookies n Creme flavor tastes like ass, especially mixed with water. It’s nearly palatable mixed with milk. If you hold your nose and drink it real fast. However, the Banana flavor is awesome, and the Chocolate/Peanut Butter is pretty good. The Strawberry is so-so. I haven’t tried any of the other flavors yet.

I don’t nake a habit of touting products since I pretty much take it as a given that most people on this site use Biotest but I must add something to this post. I have a very busy life during the spring and summer and to put it bluntly my caloric intake often falls well below where it needs to be for my size.

Normally I start dropping weight like crazy but i find that using Metabolic Drive i am able to get by on eating less while still maintaining muscle mass. I use 180 grams of the stuff daily in 2% milk with one tablespoon of Omega rx brand fish oil each day. Other that that i try to snack on fruit and nuts throughout the day and then i ususally get a pretty healthy dinner. According to most opinions I should be shriveling up to nothingness but i am able to maintain a fairly lean 260 to 270lbs on this intake, i truly believe alot of it is the high quality of the protein that i intake.

Guys, you’re much better off with a product that contains large amounts of micellar casein.

The micellar casein turns into almost a gel, and the protein is slowly and evenly absorbed for hours.

That’s why about half of the protein in Metabolic Drive is micellar casein.
