I don’t know about all this talk about him being a great person. I mean he was overly cocky and self-righteous and he refused to join the army when he was drafted. BUT…I can’t hate on him because he was such an amazing boxer.

Regardless of whether you agree with his stances, he went balls to the wall with what he believed in, and did not compromise it…even for the US government. Please do not turn this political.[/quote]

Second that. Whether you like his politics or not, the government took away his license to box for three years. (As George Carlin so eloquently put it, “Well, if you’re not gonna kill people, we won’t let you beat them up.”) Having no other skills than beating people up, he basically starved. He survived giving speeches, doing a (rather embarassing, by all accounts) show in Vegas, and handouts from friends. At any time he could have ended his troubles by accepting induction, but he stuck to his guns.

And…cocky? He wasn’t cocky. He was THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!

Nice! But you know…this is the Italian in me coming out, but I think Marciano would have beat him…

But he was a true T-man I would say

In an era when it was very dangerous for a black man to speak out against the injustices of institutionalized racism, Ali did just that. Many black athletes at the time were justifiably afraid to speak out and simply wanted to go about their lives peacefully. That would include biting their tongue if they were to be accepted by white society. Ali could have gone that route and guaranteed himself legendary status by kowtowing to the public. But he did’nt, he spoke his beliefs and in spite of it, became a legend anyway and is still beloved by most today. Normally I abhore the thought of giving an athlete hero status, but in Ali’s case it’s deserved to a great extent.

Right. He went balls to the wall in whatever he did. He trully LIVED life. And that’s damn admirable.

Does anybody know what Ali was saying in this picture?

I’ve heard that he was saying something along the lines of ‘get up, you took a dive etc…’

Not sure but I will do some research and see what I can find

Goku

“Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”

Muhammad Ali

Goku

“Who is the greatest? Eat your words! I shook up the world!”

Now I dont know if this is what he said to Sonny Liston in this pic when Sonny is on his back but it is what he was saying running around the ring.

Its all I could find. If someone else can find better please let me know.

“Eat your words” is what he’s screaming in this picture:

I love Ali, but I dislike how he changed his name.

I realize it is normal to change your name when converting to Islam, but he went from Cassius Clay who was a famous abolitionist, to Muhammad Ali, who was an infamous slaver.

It seems odd a politically aware black man would chose a slave traders name over someone that worked to free the slaves.

“Now everytime we start talking about boxing, the white folks gotta pull Rocky Marciano outta their ass. Rocky Maricano. Rocky Maricano.”

“He whooped Joe Louis’ ass.”

Anyone? Anyone??

And yes, Ali was amazing. I get the impression that Roy Jones often wishes he were this generation’s Ali. He’s not quite there yet.

hahaha. Thank God for Eddie Murphy…

He never will be there. Ali and Jones is like comparing Montana and McNabb. No to say that the latter isn’t a great athlete…but he sure as shit ain’t the former.

Roy will never be an Ali, he has spent way to much time on the ground looking up.

HAHA I was just watching Coming to America today.
“Joe Louis was 76 years old when he fought Rocky Marciano”

Rocky Marciano, was the only heavy weight to never loose his title.

Fuck you, fuck you, and fuck you!

Who next?

Thanks for the great fights Mr. Clay. You’ll be remembered as one of the greats of all time.

Wrong!

Gene Tunney retired in 1928, undefeated.
