Muay Thai/Strength Training Log

Deadlift Day:

A. Snatch-Grip Clean Pull - 125x5; 135x5; 155x5
B. Deadlift - 255x5; 285x5; 325x5
C. BW Glute-Ham Raise - 2x10
D. Ab-Wheel Rollout w/5-second Isometric Hold - 3x8

Then there was Muay Thai tonight. We worked on leg scoops to various knee/elbow combos.

Just a general question on how you find Muay Thai? I ask as I’m seriously considering taking it up in place of Krav Maga, which borrows a lot from Muay Thai. Could you outline some pros and cons of MT?

Hey, sorry if I’m getting back to you late. I haven’t been on the forum in a few days. But my opinion of Muay Thai is that it’s a great striking art that captures pretty much all the ranges in standup fighting. Another benefit is that you can spar against near maximal resistance (relative to other striking arts). That said, the sparring is also a con compared to grappling arts, because you can roll in BJJ safely multiple times per week. You can’t get away with sparring in MT that frequently. I also can’t advise you on whether MT is better than KM, simply because I haven’t trained KM and don’t know what you’re hoping to get out of martial arts training. But I hope my take on the strengths of MT helped!

I’ve had a busy few days and as such haven’t been able to post. But just to catch up:

Overhead Press Day was last Friday (5/15):

A. Push Press - 95x5; 115x5; 135x5
B. DB Bench Press - 70lb/armx2x10
C. Pullup - 3x8
D. Cable Low Row - 4x10
E1. Biceps - 3x10
E2. Triceps - 3x10

I also had BJJ open mat, where I worked on takedowns for a good hour.

Last Saturday I also drilled/rolled with a friend.

Then Monday (5/18) was Squat Day + Muay Thai:

A. Hang Clean - 115x3; 135x3; 155x3
B. Snatch-Grip Clean Pull - 155x5; 165x5; 175x5
C. Squat - 225x3; 255x3; 285x5
D. Zercher Squat - 185x8; 205x8; 225x8

And for Muay Thai I did bag work + 6x3min rounds of shadowboxing followed by 6x3min rounds of jump rope.

Tuesday (5/19) was Bench Day:

A. Bench - 145x3; 165x3; 185x6
B. Overhead Press - 95x2x10
C. Cable Row - 3x10
D. Pullup - 2x8
E1. Bis - 3x10
E2. Tris - 3x10

I also did sprints and followed the same routine for Muay Thai.

Last night was BJJ, and I am happy to say that I earned my first stripe! Such a great feeling.

And today I was back at the weights with deadlift day:

A. Hang Clean - 115x3; 135x3; 155x3
B. Snatch-Grip Clean Pull - 185x3x5
C. Deadlift - 275x3; 305x3; 345x3

And I will be in Muay Thai tonight. Tomorrow I will also be sparring in MT for the first time if all goes as planned. It’s been a long but (as always) rewarding week.

Push Press Day today:

A. Push Press - 105x3; 125x3; 135x5
B. BB Row - 135x4x10
C. DB Bench - 70/armx2x12
D. BW Pullup - 3x8
E1. Curl - 4x8
E2. Skullcrusher - 4x8

Tonight I also rolled during BJJ open mat for ~45 minutes before sparring in Muay Thai.

Thanks mate, much appreciated.
