Moving From NY to Cali

I currently have the opportunity to move to San Diego from Ny. I live about 45 mins north of NYC. This is not work related, just an opportunity to live out there with my sister for about 4 months. Her husband is deployed with the Navy and could use some help with my nephew and things around the house. Any thoughts? Advice? on San diego or the area or how California life is compared to NY. I’ve lived in Ny my whole life.

Unless you have to go on work/school leave I’d say go for it. If you don’t have anything better to do it could be a fun experience.

I think a lot hinges on three things.

  1. Do you have a car
  2. What part of town does she live in
  3. How much help around the house will you have to do.

To do SD the right way you need some money, and a car. It appears that SD is a tight city with everything nearby but that’s not the case. Any specific questions feel free to PM me, I’ve been in and around this town since '96.

I love LaJolla.

the winters (if we even have them here) are awesome. I used to live in Manhattan but was born and raised here in San Diego. A car is key, our trolley will not get you around easily at all. If you are close to Pacific Beach or Downtown you’ll find bars/things to do at night (but this aint NYC so last call is usually 1230-130am) For 4 months it could be worth it - 100% no chance of dealing with snow/freezing temps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Dude, do it. San Diego is an amazing place for sure.

This coming from a kid who moved from NY to CA (albeit, Sacramento not SD) almost a year ago.

Go for it!
you’ll get used to the traffic, reluctantly.
you’ll get used to the bar-sluts, happily.

San Diego is a great place, especially if your living there rent free.

I would say in general people are more laid back and shallow/flaky. lots of people break their word on shit. everyone is your friend and aren’t direct with you like back east. Weather is great. cost is expensive. If you are used to NY though, it is comparable.
X3 on the car and traffic

I am originally from NY and been here since 01 with a brief stay 96-96 courtesy of USN

La Jolla is the shit, unfortunately a rich city, it is beautiful though. The Gas Lamp district has some good places to party. SD is laid back, relaxed, and fun. You will see things moving slower in SD than in NY that’s for sure. From SD, you are probably about a 5 hr drive to Vegas, always a plus.

Go… you lucker fucker.

i mean seriously.

if you don’t go, can you reccomend me to go? i’d like to see SD rent free.

lived here in SD for all 24 years of my life.

What part of town is your sister living in?

I love my city, beautiful girls, sun is out until mid-Janurary…traffic does suck sometimes though, but can be avoided.

oh yeah, and the mexican food. you will come to hate all mexican food you have had anywhere else.

Don’t go to Tijuana without a guide.

California is one of the best places on the planet, and San Diego is one of the best places in California. Ipsofacto, start packing your things and get out to the west coast.

San Diego is great. I live in the east county and pretty much wear shorts year around. Not sure if the rent is free for you, but the further you live away from the ocean, the cheaper it gets.

awesome guys I knew I wouldn’t be let down haha. alright as for where she is living; Coronado, but their lease is up and she is looking at Chula Vista. I do have a car. only thing is gonna be looking for a part time job. i wanna take some classes at a local school( any advice on that is appreciated)… and as for how much i’ll need to help out; not a lot considering she is a stay-at-home mom and living off that great Navy income while he is away. I could use a break from the shitty weather here in Ny, way to inconsistent. and as for training. any good Gyms in the Chula Vista area anyone knows about? Thanks again Guys.

I don’t know where it is relative to Chula Vista, but I worked out in World gym while I was there on vacation. If it’s not too far, I’d suggest that place. Of course, there are people on here that are from SD, so I’m sure they’ll give better suggestions.

What’s Sacramento like? Been wanting to visit but whenever I’m thereabouts I always get stuck in the Bay Area. So much to do and see there.

Chula Vista is down south near the border. You can expect a lot of hispanics in that area. I don’t know any specific gyms over there since i live in El Cajon. I go to one in over here called pure fitness which has a lot of free weights and doesn’t get too crowded which is good.

It’s too bad she isn’t in Coronado anymore because Coronado is beautiful. It’s a little island that you have to take a bridge over to get to.

As far as schools, i’m not sure which is closest to Chula Vista, but some community colleges are southwestern, Mesa, Cuyamaca, Grossmont, and San Diego city college.

Oh yeah, watch out for bros when you get near the east county!!
