The King of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters

What a great documentary! Seriously, anyone who has played or still plays video games has to check this out. The story of 1 guy chasing the Donkey Kong high score is easy to relate to, and Billy Mitchell (who holds the score, then loses it then mysteriously gets it back) plays a great antagonist.

Embrace your inner nerd and watch the movie.

That’s a popular movie in this thread. I think you’re like the fourth person that’s posted watching it recently. Seems everyone has liked it, but what’s not to like, right?

Here’s the problem with that movie. Everyone looks like a complete loser except for one exception. The science teacher who *SPOILER * got cheated out of the record by uber geek with the long hair. SPOILER

I watched it and thought to myself: “I’m cooler than everyone in this movie. Only two people are as cool as me and that’s the science teacher and the old lady.”

Sad.

Well, it is a documentary about guys still trying to break the Donkey Kong high score…in 2005. I wasn’t exactly expecting the people involved to be ‘cool’.

Well, one guy did wear a weightlifting glove to prevent calluses on his hand while he played games that had a track ball. That’s pretty cool.

Another guy was doing wrist curls while watching tapes of guys trying to set high scores.
Were either of those scenes involving “Mr. Awesome”? He was…well…awesome.

No. I wish Mr. Awesome would’ve showed up at the arcade and confronted Billy Mitchell. That would’ve been awesome indeed.

This morning I watched Starship Troopers. It was brought up in another thread so I got the urge to watch it again.

It’s still cool in my book.

Think about the CGI in that movie for a moment.

That movie was made in '97 making it over a decade old. THAT is pretty cool.

Totally! That’s one of the things I noticed about it when watching it. The effects still hold up well. It doesn’t look like a 10 year old movie at all.

Plus, that movie has some great quotes.

Starship Troopers, aside from being a pretty badass movie, is my reference point for computer animation. Whenever I’m having an argument about whether or not a movie’s CG animation sucked, I say “Come on, Starship Troopers looked better than that, and it came out 10 years ago!”

I’m totally stealing your point for the next time I get in an argument about CG animation.

One could argue that Starship Troopers is obviously the exception. But then again if one movie can do it, why not all of them?
.

And the answer is the budget. :D
Budget is a big factor, but think of how much computer processing power has advanced in the last ten years. My iMac probably has more processing power than the super computers they used to render the animation for that movie. You still have to hire digital artists, and it still takes talent and time, but I’m sure you could do what they did in Starship Troopers with half of the budget.

This is movie-related…I saw on CNBC today that Microsoft and Netflix have reached a deal that will allow Netflix to host movies on the Xbox 360.

That’s real nice. No more having to mail movies, you can just download them off your 360.

They have a box you can buy for $100 to that allows you to stream movies to your tv. There is also a widget for Media Center that allows you to do this. Which would be a whole lot more awesome if Netflix’s streaming library did suck balls.

This Bill Mitchell dude is a coward. The guy he’s afraid to compete against face to face is a science teacher, family man, and seems like a good person. And by far the coolest person in the movie.

Billy Mitchell is just a douche bag. Watch this movie just to watch how stupid that guy is. So damn smug.

If you check around online, the Twin Galaxies people are disputing the way they and Billy Mitchell were portrayed in the film. They claim that Weibe and Mitchell had played against each other several times in the past and were actually on friendly terms.

Other’s have countered that it’s just the Twin Galaxies people trying to protect the image of their ‘golden boy’ Billy Mitchell and they are doing everything they can to get Mitchell his record back.

Who’s right? Two sides to every story…

Batman Begins
I’ve seen this movie quite a few times. A friend had a screening last night to get everyone refreshed on the story. A group of us are going to catch The Dark Knight on the IMAX screen out here. This is the 1 movie I’ve had on my “must see” list this year.

Saw Bringing out the Dead and Lucky Number Sleven.

The first was a Martin Scorsese flick staring Nicholas Cage as a paramedic on the verge of a break down. It was okay, but I really didn’t see the point. I know what they were getting at, but the epiphany that Cage eventually had was obvious from the beginning, so when he finally got there I was just glad the idiot finally caught on. It was a Scorsese flick though, and he knows how to make movies, so there was plenty worth watching.

Sleven was alright.

I’d give them both 6 out of 10.

That’s funny, I watched Batman Begins last night in order to prepare myself for this weekend and to have it fresh in my mind.

IMAX on Sunday for me.

So far this week I’ve watched:

The Weeds: Season One - I rented this on a friend’s recommendation and I really liked it. I’m going to pick up Season Two this week.

Shutter - Slow, boring and bad. This is another movie theme they are beating to death. Where they are being tormented by a ‘spirit’ and they spend the rest of the movie figuring out how to put the spirit to rest before it kills anyone else. Blah!

The Bank Job - This was okay. Does Jason Statham only do movies involving heists or car chases?

Batman Begins - See my post above.

Tron - Just felt like watching it again. This is movie I’d really like to see them do a remake or sequel for. I’d love to see an updated version of this.

Not much info, but Tron is in the works:

They were talking about on G4 a few months ago.

SWEET! May not be a lot of info, but for now it’s enough to know that it’s in the works. Yes!!!

I just checked on wiki and found this:

“It is not yet known whether either Bruce Boxleitner or Jeff Bridges will return to reprise their roles. However, Bridges has been quoted as saying, “Why not do it? The reasons to do it and the reason I did [the original Tron] was because it was so innovative and I understand that they??ve got a whole new batch of stuff like that, innovations that they want to use on this so that could be kind of fun”.”

Little Children - I kinda liked this flick. Sort of a dark comedy/drama. And Jennifer Connley was fucking hot.

I’m also in the process making my way through the first 4 seasons of Rescue Me. I don’t know how I missed this show, but it is fucking awesome.

Also re-watched 48 Hours and The World is Not Enough. I forgot that Denise Crosby(Tasha Yar from Star Trek TNG)was in 48 Hours.

I need to rent it again. When it first came out on DVD, I rented it, but never finished watching it. It was on those movies where every time I started to watch it, someone or something would interrupt me. About the only thing I remember was Kate Winslet naked.

I watched:

Penelope - A little too fairy tale-ish for me (and yes, I realize that was the point). Some of it was just too corny for me.

Meet Bill - I liked this. Stars Aaron Eckhart, Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Alba. There were some scenes and lines that really made me laugh.

Weeds: Season 2 - Watched Season 1 last week, and still like it a lot. Very funny show.

Batman: Gotham Knight - In keeping with the Batman theme for the weekend, I rented this. I liked it a lot. A few of the stories were really good.

The Dark Knight - LOVED THIS! One of the best movies I’ve seen in a while!

There was a lot of that. I was bummed Jennie didn’t bust out her amazing rack. That makes any movie Oscar material.

I haven’t posted here in a while, so maybe I can actually make a list like you guys do:

Hancock - good, fun summer movie

Ocean’s 11, 12, 13 pretty good, except for 12, which was overcomplicated and just annoying

Star Wars - Han shot first

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - Just watched it for the hell of it last night

UHF - another one for the hell of it, though I still laugh my ass of at certain parts

Proof - Decent movie

The Dark Knight (I can finally click on the thread) - Nothing I can say that hasn’t been said

Up next are Monster’s Ball, Gotham Knight, 21, and, uh, I forgot what else is on my Queue.

I think that’s the reason I’ve been lazy about renting it again, as I didn’t remember any Jennifer Connelly nakedness. It might be time to watch Requiem For A Dream again.
