With so much predictable garbage in the theaters I’m going to list some hidden treasures.
Hey we know this is pretty subjective and that one person’s favorite might be another’s steaming pile. In anticipation of this, I’m only going to list movies that you can rent for a low price or even stream for free. This way, you can press ‘stop’ within 15-20 minutes if the show isn’t worth your time. Helluva lot better than dropping $15-20 bucks at the theater, right?
If anyone wants to give their personal recommendations, please do. Just remember, the movie has to be easily rented or streamed. And bootlegs of first-run movies still in theaters don’t count.
And pretty please no spoilers!!!
This week’s recommendation is Headhunters. Original title Hodejegerne.
Plot. A successful recruiter for corporations has a double life. He resorts to stealing expensive paintings to pay for his lavish lifestyle. Clearly, this is a man living above his means. As his luck begins running out, his world begins crumbling down on him.
As for ratings, I’d give it R so it’s not kid friendly. It’s from Norway so you’ll have to be fluent in the language or not mind the subtitles. I’m a little surprised the U.S. hasn’t ripped it off yet.
See this movie if you’re into smart thrillers.
IMBD rating: 7.6/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92% on the Tomato Meter
MinotaurXXX rating: 4 minotaurs out of possible 5
Just a word about my rating system. The lowest possible score is zero. The highest possible score is five. To give an idea of my personal tastes, read below.
5 minotaurs: The highest level of cinematic achievement. Casablanca, The Last Emperor, Gone with the Wind, Apocalypse Now. An exclusive club indeed.
4 minotaurs: Excellent movie that really should be given consideration. Some examples are The Unforgiven, Big Wednesday, Manhattan, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Blade Runner the Final Cut, The Empire Strikes Back, A Streetcar Named Desire (the Brando version), The Magnificent Seven.
Many others but most cinemaphiles are aware of these so it should be a good reference point for what I deem worthy of 4 or more minotaurs.
3 minotaurs: A movie that misses the mark just enough to keep it from getting a higher score.
In this thread, I will only list movies I deem worthy of 4 minotaurs and above. Some of the movies might get a 4.25, 4.5, 4.75 minotaurs. For example, now that I think about it, I’d give The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly 4.5.
