Saw it last night. The story line is pretty weak and the acting is so-so. But the action is kick ass and the Rock is much better than I thought he would be. It’s definately more of a sword and sorcery flick and not really related much to the Mummy movies. The Rock’s character definately reminds me of a Conan type character. I know I’m gonna get jumped on for this, but he’s much better than Arnold ever was in this type of role. BTW, I’m not a wwf fan or previously a Rock fan. He’s pretty damn charismatic though. Lots of beautiful people to look at in this movie and decent special effects. If you like " slice em up" action films , I reccomend it.
Magnus, dude…dude…DUDE! I’m gonna wait until this one is a 99cent special rental at my local DVD rental joint. This movie has garnered more funny reviews than Battlefield Earth. Things like, “The Rock certainly lives up to his namesake in acting…” and that he needs to find his “…inner ‘Terminator’”…
Yeah, I know what do critics know? But some of these guys, like "The Cranky Critic" and Moriarty are guys that I trust. As well as Roger Ebert - and man, he had fun with this one! Basically, I'm thinking the reviews are better than the product being reviewed? I'm waiting for Spider-Man - yeah, baby!
What can I say, I was entertained and I never looked at my watch once. As far as critics go I look at them in the same light as I look at the financial advisor at my bank. If financial advisors know so much about investing, how come they’re still working at the bank and not independently wealthy? Same for movie critics. If they know so much about cinematography, how come there not writing, producing or directing great movies. I respect your opinion on movies very much. I don’t think I know anyone who is as knowlegeable on the subject as you. But sometimes you gotta forget what the critics say and let yourself be entertained.
Patricia I saw the Rock on SNL and he was damned funny… maybe these critics can’t handle it that some big “muscle head” can be a good actor, funny, intelligent and in awesome shape? I hasn’t seen the movie, but I think the dood deserves as chance.
Mag: I’m not knocking you! 'k. I’m glad you enjoyed this flick! And I’m sure the goal of the movie was just too entertain - nothing more. Even though, they kinda messed up the whole mythology of the “Scorpian King” - since he is a bad guy in The Mummy Returns. And that movie wasn’t even entertaining…eeeks.
I look at it this way about critics. Oh, do check out www.filmthreat.com - This is Chris Gore's site. They like to review small film festivals as well as the big commercial productions. Good site. Anywhoos, I use critics to get a good grip as to what's out there. They provide me with info as to movies that I may not have heard about and might be interested in seeing (like "Shiri" a bloody action flick from Korea - hearin' ALOT good things!). I remember, after Gene Siskel's passing (god, I miss that man, he was cool), Roger Ebert had "guest critics" for the remainder of the season and through the following year. Many of them were directors. Like Peter Yates and Martin Scorsese. The directors talked much better about their own films than others. I think it comes down to different requirements in each profession. And once you get to know about what a director or producer has to go through - I think you'd rather be a critic!
Ooop, don't want to hijack a thread! But let me end: I LOVE movies. And yes, I do have fun at movies and can sit back and be entertained (like, I'm needing to watch "Big Trouble in Little China" right about now!). Oh, one more thing: a little over 20-years ago, Conan was unleashed on the screens. And we're STILL talking about that movie. Arnold set the standards - do you think 20-years from now, kids will be going, "I wanna be like Dwayne, The Rock and the Scorpian King"? I think it''s still gonna be "I wanna be like Arnold in Conan..." This movie is a test for the "power that be" to see if indeed The Rock can carry a movie -it'll make 39 million this weekend. So, that may have provided their answer.
I have not seen the movie, only the parts they have shown on trailers, and then the scene they show when they interview “The Rock” on late night talk shows. The thing I am disappointed in is the lack of violence. I know he kills people, but he was just stabbing them, not chopping off heads and other various body parts “Conan style.” It’s cool that he does kill people, but lets have some blood flowing and just have him kick ass.
I saw it friday night. It was hilariously funny, but the Rock Better at “Conan” type characters than Arny? Give me a break… He’s missing SO much, including a good script, a manly voice, and that “kick your ass” attitude. He’s “bad” attitude is a product of the wwf, its fake and it shows, whereas Arnold came out of his momma whipping butt.
Hey, Scorpian King pulled in 36 million from the weekend. And it’ll likely be the number one flick again this weekend - but as you know, a li’l movie about a webslinger will be opening next weekend - you gonna check it out? I know we are, and maybe I’ll post a mini-review afterwards.
But, you know, I'm thinkin' that it would be great if I could get some T-Peoples to come over to our "crib" and we could watch movies, eat some good food and talk "mus-kels" all night. Be cool, huh? Of course, you and your girl would be included!
First of all let me say, I am not a WWF fan. However, I do respect the guys that have the ability to make it in that business. It seems to be a strenuous line of work. I saw the movie. The storyline was weak, but I thought Dwayne (The Rock) showed some potential. I am a big fan of him as a person. From interviews I have seen he seems to be an intelligent guy. I know that the WWF lists the guy at 6’5, 275 lbs. This is impossible…he is big; not that big. I am thinking 6’3 or 6’4, 230-240. He does have an impressive physique. My girlfriend even laughed at me because following the movie I rushed home and had a protein shake. Overall, I enjoyed the movie.
Ya, I’m really looking forward to the spiderman movie. I’ve noticed that all the local theatres are pre-selling tickets so I think we might wait till Sun. or Mon. to see it. A movie night sounds like a very cool idea, unfortunately we live many, many miles from anywhere near the west coast. It’s too bad cause I would love to pick your brains for a couple of hours about movies. Hey, I noticed on another thread that you are a big John Cusack fan. I know he’s done a lot of quirky, off beat movies. Any sleepers you could reccomend?
Well, someday. Someday! Be a big barbecue.
Okay good, old John Cusack. You know what I love about him? He works with up and coming film makers. Alot. Which is so cool. Anyhows, LOTS of the movies he's done are good. Especially: Grosse Point Blank! Being John Malkovich! Bullets Over Broadway (great flick)! High Fidelity! Bob Roberts (a fun little spoof on political campaigns by Tim Robbins). Tapeheads (oh my god - wierd, fun). Better Off Dead - kinda dark, but kinda funny, too.
Eight Men Out - one of the best movies about baseball (I say ONE because Bull Durham is the BEST. IMO). Say Anything, is classic, quintessential John Cusack and Cameron Crowe - just a damn smart, witty, warm movie. And a gem: The Grifters directed by Stephen Frears (who directed Dangerous Liaisions) - if you haven't seen this one - DO! And yeah, there's Con Air, which is not bad, because of John but Nicholas Cage decided to sleep walk through this flick - and slur his lines. But John Malkovich makes a delicious villain!
Oh, my head's starting to hurt. But, I hope this help ya! ;-)
Thanks for the list Patricia. I’ve seen all of them except for “Tapeheads” and “Better off Dead”. I will definately check them out. Did you ever see any of his early movies when he was quite young? I thought “Hot Pursuit” and “Sure thing”, while cheesy teenage movies, were really entertaining. I loved "The Grifters, Grosse pointe blank and High fidelity.
You remember that thread that Mufasa had begun about T-Movies? Well, one of the movies I posted I think you would really, really like. That is, if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s “Mountains of the Moon” directed by Bob Rafaelson (who directed Five Easy Pieces, I believe) and stars Patrick Bergin as Sir Richard Burton. Now, if you haven’t seen it, I think this might be up your ally. Good, smart, historical action flick.
Just thought I'd throw one your way, since I failed at the John Cusack flick list...:-(
Patricia
I will definately check out “Mountains of the moon”. My degree is in history (never used it) and I enjoy historical action or drama movies most. Ever see “Zulu dawn”? Its a bit on the rah rah British empire side, but a great historical action flick.
Oh, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that flick! BUT, let me know what you think of Mountains after watching it. I think you’ll enjoy.
