The second is Ninja Scroll. Its kinda old but you would never know it from watching. The movie is just a GREAT action warrior tale. I have nothing to compare it to except maybe the old Clint Eastwood man with no name Or Yojimbo movies. Do yourself a favor watch these 2 TRUST ME.
Good call! I was a huge fan of this movie before moving to Japan, and figured it would have been a huge hit there. I was surprised to hear that very few people had heard about it, and most anime nerds relegated it to “B-List” status.
I haven’t gone through every post here so I’m not sure if these two have come up, but:
1.) Session 9: Very spooky psychological horror film starring David Caruso (don’t laugh).
2.) The Count of Monte Cristo (2002): The previews for this movie made it look like some limp-wristed swashbuckling movie (almost like a musical) but it turned out to be awesome. The book should be required reading for every school boy IMO.
One of my friends favorite movies is the count of monte cristo, one day i saw it on tv as i was flipping through and watched it, great movie I must agree.

Some parts of it are too ‘hollywooded up’, but it’s a great flick. Luis Guzman as Jacopo makes the film.
‘You are wealthier than any man I have EVER heard of.’
Monte Cristo is hardly ‘school boy’ reading material. The Penguin Classics translation by Robin Buss is the best. It’s my favorite novel.
Best quote ever: ‘Madam, I never eat muscatel grapes.’
I love that movie. My favorite quote was from jacopo his right hand man. He was plotting his revenge when jacopo said: (I had to google it to make sure it was accurate:
"Jacopo: Why not just kill them? I’ll do it! I’ll run up to Paris - bam, bam, bam, bam. I’m back before week’s end. We spend the treasure. How is this a bad plan? "
For a massive schlockfest of a horror/comedy (leaning more toward comedy than anything else) go see Lesbian Vampire Killers. Yes, you read that right. Lesbian Vampire Killers.
I know this is about movies that should have sucked but didn’t, but City of God is just too good not to mention. It’s a Brazilian flick that takes place in one of the favelas (slums) outside Rio. If you’ve got a friend who’s resistant to the idea of watching foreign movies, get him to see this and you’ll have a convert on your hands.
How has there been no mention of Army of Darkness? Both the Evil Deads have been posted and Drag Me to Hell, but no Army of Darkness? I’m disappointed in you all.

After I watched it with my friend, I instructed him to pull a little Ze with me everywhere we go.

This Movie an the Wire series made me feel that Growing up in East NY Brooklyn was a cake walk.

Sure it is, unless you get to school via short bus.
Great characters, awesome story, some treasure thrown in there…it might actually entice kids to read.

Dude, it’s twelve hundred pages long, has a billion characters and subplots, and all the names are French.

How many kids can follow a book like that?
They make condensed versions of most classics where they maintain the key elements and drop most of the florid language and obscure references. The version we read in high school was only like 500 pages.

Ah c’mon! You’re just being a purist! I’ll have you know I read the abridged, 16-page version of the bible and got the full jist of it. Son of God comes down, has a few laughs, killed by irate Italian fellow, couple references to apples and sodomy…good times! The last 8 pages of it were actually in “Choose your Own Adventure” format! I picked wrong and wound up being chased by a scythe-wielding skeleton on a horse…

Psh. I didn’t say you have to read it in French, just read all of it damn it.
I would give Unknown a “rental” rating. Damn near every supporting actor from every sci-fi horror movie over the last few years was in this but the overall quality seems low budget. It was a decent use of memory loss to tell a story, but in my opinion, Pandorum does that much better.
The Fourth Kind - This movie would have been great…if they had left out or at least greatly reduced all of that “real footage”. The real woman this is based on shouldn’t have been shown at all because she looks like a zombie. The actors here could act but by constantly trying to shove it down our throats that everything is REAL, you immediately fall out of the illusion of just watching a movie and start thinking “bullshit”.
They need to release a version with just the actors and no “real people”.

It’s why I turned it off. It stopped being a movie for me.

Session 9 just didn’t do it for me. I turned it off because nothing was happening.

Oh, and one more shout out for The Descent (2005). This movie was way better than expected once they get under ground.
The Descent 2 is just as good. In this part the chick who makes it out, goes back literally 1 or 2 days after she escaped to go find her friends. and then it just starts all over again.
