Hi everyone I’m starting to do a paper for a Psych class I’m taking and looking for articles/studies,personal stories, etc on “What drives an athlete to excel”…what seperates them from your average person in the daily grind of training, nutrition, etc…What motivates them to succeed even when they can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel…Any info would help thanks…
you arent going to find any peer reviewed articles on that subject bub.
Everybody is different man. What drives somebody, depends on that person. Some do it for the joy of winning, others for sheer enjoyment of the sport, some do it becaue they are really good at what they do and don’t have much else to do and others do it for money. That’s what I believe.
The NSCA CSCS textbook has a section on this.

This is all true but what about the people in team sports that their team is horrible…I guess that would be the money or keeping true to oneself.

Is any of literature open to the public or would you have have to purchase the textbook…
Thanks
You can try doing some online research based on a specific sport <?> - I know Muhammed Ali, Alex Rodriguez, Kobe, Gilbert Arenas, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, Steve Nash, Amare Stouedmire, etc… all have some story to tell of how they stay focused & persevere through it all, good & bad…
I find I read most of these anectdotal stories & testimonies in the pages of Sports Ilustrated & in some good sports psychology books…
Might not help but damn if the stories are not inspiring…
Look up “The Portable Personal Trainer” by Eric Harr & “Mind Gym” by Gary Mack - I have both & they are very good reads on athletes & internal motivation.
It’s a start (I know it’s more casual/laymans’ reading but it could point you in the right direction)
Good luck.
