More Women in Power?

Yes, there are. Female subordination exists to varying degrees, sometimes in brutal forms, and likely has existed since man was here. I asked him that question because in all my life I never saw it in any institutionalized form for the masses in the US.

When I have written about women as a group, I have referred to inherent characteristics and predictable behavior and thought processes amongst them, over and over and over again. When someone speaks of female or male nature they are not dismissing uniqueness amongst them.

I didn’t say it was “pro-woman”. I said it somehow managed to be both an exploitation film AND a critique on exploitation films as a whole. It’s like Tobe Hooper’s Eaten Alive, which I hated because it bored the fuck out of me lol. Wes Craven’s later foray into the slasher genre, Scream, was an explicitly deconstructionist film, which is a subgenre of postmodernism in art.

I also wrote that this was an era of growing nihilism so we’re kinda agreeing on that part. The Vietnam war, the Tate Murders etc. These spawned some really good movies, though. E.g: Apocalypse Now, Escape from New York, Death Wish 3 (LOLOL), What was the point of Death Wish 3? It was basically Charles Bronson killing lots of people in hilarious ways, which is why it’s one of my favourite movies. Vigilantism? The main bad guy got liquidated with a fucking ROCKET LAUNCHER at the end while his clothes remained intact and floated down from a window LMAO!!! That’s not the way it works! That’s the kind of shit you see in cartoons! The first one had a point but it bored the fuck out of me.

The giallos, in contrast, were completely unapologetic about the explicit violence they depicted, mostly on women. They almost literally revelled in them. Suspiria was great but it went past the point of absurdity with that completely unrealistic scene of a knife stabbing a chick’s beating heart.

And if we look at more conservative countries like Japan, who’s the most well known director and actor? Takesh FUCKING Kitano! Fuck, I watched the fucking pile of crap which was the Ghost in the Shell live action movie ONLY because he was in it. I’m not even a fan of the fucking cartoon. The dude’s own movies - as in both directed by and starring himself - are both nihilism and postmodernism turned up to 11.

Which is one of the most popular “mainstream” Japanese movies internationally? Battle Royale, which also had him as the star. Who directed it? Kinji Fukasaku, who made some of the most nihilist shit I’ve ever seen from any country throughout his entire career. Yakuza Graveyard, Battles without Honor and Humanity.

I was quoting the lyric from the Led Zeppelin song of the same name. Regretably I’ve never watched the movie. The horrible Tarantino wannabe films post-Pulp Fiction which reportedly drew heavily from past genre flicks like Dazed and Confused just to be clever and pop culture relevant sort of put me off.

And regarding Pulp Fiction, I’m like 90% sure the scene where Bruce Willis runs over Ving Rhames and the latter shoots a woman in the streets but the camera remains nonchalantly fixated on him while we hear her screaming was inspired by Kitano’s Violent Cop.

EDIT:

And if we look at popular Western movies from the 70s to early 80s, I don’t see the root of their evolution based on the erosion of traditional Western values or anything like that. GOOD movies are usually a response to public perceptions on society in their eras. I do not know what the political situation was like in the US was like during that era other than the backlash against the Vietnam war but hear me out:

Japan lost WW2 and was both socially devastated and humiliated, which caused the fall of Imperialism and their own form of “Fascism”, which is why even today the government didn’t have the balls to mandate any lockdowns or mask wearing prior to the recent massive spike in cases due to Delta because this could have been perceived by the public as a return to that era.

The great Akira Kurosawa’s movies were a reflection of post-WW2 disenchantment and nihilism. The Seven Samurai was a reflection of this and it ended with a tone of complete scepticism of human condition and mourning of the death of the good in humanity. The US remake didn’t fucking get it. Cowboys were outlaws and heroes for saying “fuck you” to the establishment and protecting the rights of people when the authorities were incapable of doing so. The “Samurai” in his movies were Ronins - fallen members of past clans who were skilled warriors well educated on military tactics but were now vagrants without anyone to serve and they always ended up alone and moved on back to lives without any meaning at the end.

The Italians, however, GOT IT because they were also under a Fascist regime. Sergio Leone practically ripped Kurasawa’s Yojimbo almost scene for scene, which led to the popularity of “Spaghetti Westerns”, which made the West finally get it and we got Escape from New York and Mad Max 2. Even the recent Fury Road showed Max walking away from a society he helped create at the end. I have a feeling the real rationale was the same as that of Kurosawa’s Sanjuro, where the titular character, a Ronin, realized he couldn’t stay in a society where someone of calibre and perceived status amongst in the public existed as a threat to the current leadership because this would create an imbalance and future social strife would inevitably ensue requiring his involvement again.

In Sanjuro, the “good” and really smart leader whom he helped put back in power for the good of the society he saves makes a pragmatic decision to dispose of him because of this but Sanjuro was smart enough to anticipate this, which led to one of the most badass endings ever put on screen AND basically depicted the same thing that The Seven Samurai did. Dude just wanted to survive and be left alone.

For whatever reason I find that scene to be hilarious … I can’t help but laugh at it

That seemed to be the one of the intents in that similar scene from Violent Cop. Kitano was a popular COMEDIAN before he decided to go into movies. That was his first movie. He did something similar to Charles Bronson’s “sock full of pennies” from the first Death Wish in his movie Hanabi and made it fucking hilarious. Hanabi would be considered an “arthouse” movie for people who don’t have sense of humor lol.

I get what you’re saying but there are different narratives on both sides and in both mainstream media and alternative media that do place them into singular groups and make extreme statements about them. I think we pick up on them, subconsciously or otherwise, and lots of context gets lost.

I do not agree with lots of shit about “groups” being thrown around these days. I think the polls on Muslims’ tolerance of other cultures and religions worldwide are inherently flawed and I have a lot of confidence I can dissect them and call out the bullshit if I can be bothered to read them. Or maybe I’m just too big of a fan of Ben Affleck’s Batman that I think Sam Harris talks out of his ass too much.

I also think the narrative on worldwide IQ stats is complete bullshit. Who the hell would even want to complete an IQ test, let alone do one properly when one lives in a shithole that doesn’t give a fuck about education? Chinese dominated countries scoring the highest? That’s to be expected if you take the culture of “Imperial Examinations” and our obsessions with paper qualifications into account.

Shit, if you made me do one today, you’d have to provide me with some form of benefit like pay me for my efforts or I’m either just gonna say “no” or half-ass it lol.

You can dismiss IQ tests if you wish. However IQ is a major predictor of life outcomes. If you don’t believe that, it’s OK. (I’m not being sarcastic.) It’s also largely hereditary.

I can agree with this. I knew people whom were smart as fuck but they were “slackers” who obviously couldn’t even be bothered to complete an IQ test in school seriously. It could be more of a behavioural issue. Their outcomes in life would naturally follow this kind of mindset and behaviour.

And my post was about worldwide IQ stats, not just certain “groups” of people living in, say, a First World country. Look at the top 3 countries. All are Chinese dominated ones. I’ve explained why I think this is the case. The top 6 are countries have similar cultures.

China:

South Korea:

Japan:

If we buy North Korea’s stats (lol), 8 out of the top 10 countries with the highest IQs are either Chinese dominated or have similar cultures and histories with regards to Imperial Examinations.

What? This is a terrible movie. The first one was the only one I liked

A family man, his life as he knows it ripped apart. Degeneracy is abound in 70’s era NYC. The law can’t help, he slowly unravels, turning to vigilante justice to rid the streets of the types that took what was dear to him

I didn’t find it boring, I thoughroughly enjoyed the film. That being said, the message pushed is morally abhorrent.

It’s almost akin to some sort of fascist fantasy wherein one is encouraged to behave as judge, jury and executioner, impose lethal force to rid society of any and all degeneracy. It’s a scary concept, how far down that rabbit hole do you go when a society starts to go down this route? The Phillipines encouraged this and they went from shooting suspected drug users dead to shooting political activists, journalists, members of opposing political factions etc under the excuse/guise of ‘drug use’.

It would have been one thing for Bronson to have gone after those who tore his family apart. It’s another to go out with a gun, flash wads of cash in public looking for provocation after which you shoot anyone who provokes you.

The main character starts off as a conscientious objector, yet the events of his life hurtle him towards an ideological philosophy of which today would closely align with that of the far right.

The film isn’t racist, as some are led to believe. At least I don’t think it is. Rather it’s a political commentary demonizing contemporary youth counterculture that was present at the time. Painting NYC as a war zone more dangerous than say… Some oppressive Middle Eastern regieme. The hippie kids are the problem… Their sheer degeneracy is turning NY into a failed state. Muggers, rapists and murderers within the film are very young, and are seen to encompass a wide swath of ethnic demographics, including caucasians.

NYC was at its worst during the 1970-80s, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as this film made it out to be. The cinematography within this film paints NYC at the time to be a post apocalyptic hellscape so dangerous you can’t even walk down the street without getting held up.

It’s laughable to think that the pot smoking, “flower power”, peace above all type hippies could lead to NYC succumbing to violence. Poverty, desparation, drug addiction, a culture engrained in violence etc. These variables lead to violence.

I happen to believe this is what death wish was commenting on. Though in doing so a hyperbolic narrative was pushed and the proposed solution to deal with societal erosion … From my perspective is even worse than the problem at hand.

Yeah. It was so bad it was GREAT!

:joy:

It needs to be noted however that correlation doesn’t certainly conciliate a given outcome.

Someone with an IQ of 100 might have an amazing work ethic, a drive to succeed in life and thus become a lawyer. They’d have to work a hell of a lot harder than an academically inclined individual, but it can be done

Someone with an IQ of 125 who sits around playing video games all day isn’t going to automatically be well off.

IQ is one predictive variable, and a pretty good one… But work ethic, the drive you have to succeed in life and what you as an individual want out of life. These variables also play a HUGE role pertaining to how you turn out.

no… It was so bad that it was just bad… I’ve seen all of them

The dirty harry franchise was superior in almost every conceivable aspect. I prefer old movies to the woke content obnoxiously prevalent in modern cinema. It actually puts me off when movies try WAY too hard in order to pander towards a certain viewer base

South Park was spot on with their “PC principle” character.

No, it was GOOD!!!

How can anyone not find this hilarious? Shit, even the lame score was done by Jimmy Page.

Right. I said it was one major predictor, not the only one. There are high-IQ prisoners and homeless people.

However, if a certain IQ level isn’t there, certain things cannot be done or attained.

I can’t comment further because I will be hijacking and getting into inappropriate territory.

If you read the fine print of many of those stats, you see that some were estimates based on other countries in the region. Some used certain demographics within a country that don’t represent the country as a whole. Does anyone believe researchers actually went and gave Somalians IQ tests? We also know that in some countries, like China, they make sure that only those who will do well get tested.

I didn’t know all these. But I can tell you that education is so highly regarded in China there have been reports of:

  1. Parents selling their houses and living on the streets so their kids can afford to pay for university. Not making this up. This phenomena was rampant enough to be addressed in a movie by someone with enough clout to criticize the system without getting fucked nor censored.

(That was luo ye gui geng by Zhao Benshan for anyone who knows or is interested in this shit, He was probably the most popular celeb in China 10 years ago. I don’t know what the English title is. One of the co-stars is Song Dandan, the stepmother of the chick who directed Marvel’s The Eternals. She was one of the most popular actresses and had a shitload of clout in the industry as well at the time.

It’s a tragic comedy about a rural dude who has no money but has to come up with ingenious ways to hitchhike across the country with the dead body of his friend because he promised him he would bring him back to his hometown to be cremated if he died before him, hence the title which means “a fallen leave must return to it’s roots”.)

  1. Teachers illegally obtaining and selling Ritalin to students. Still not making this up.

  2. Teachers getting paid to sit for exams for students. REALLY not making this up.

Methylphenidate (Ritalin) only lasts 2-3 hours. Not the best ADHD treatment imo. You get ritalin LA, but I don’t usually see that being prescribed relative to instant release.
