More Trouble Than I Am Worth: Chaos Is The Plan (T3hPwnisher Log)

Nachos are my friend. I live in San Jose, and a new taqueria opened up ~50 yards from house. I am both immensely grateful and curse its existence due to outstanding burritos, tacos, and nachos. If I were a better man, I would carry heavy DBs or KBs to its location prior to partaking, but alas I am not.

@simo74 I relate WAY too well to what you just said. I actually was JUST thinking it today, as I booked it home, threw the weights in the vest as soon as I got in the garage, shucked off my work clothes, changed quick into something to walk the dog with the vest on, immediately came home, grabbed some piedmontese steak tips out of the basement to thaw in the sink, dismantled a rusted out BBQ grill that I’m taking to the dump later, got in my truck to pick up my kid knowing I was going to turn around, make us both dinner and then air fry those steak tips for lunch tomorrow before heading out to my kid’s sport practice. I thought to myself ā€œI only know 1 speed, and it’s my hair on fireā€, and I THRIVE when I’m put under that kind of pressure…but I"m SO bad at slowing down, enjoying them moment, and appreciating the REWARD of that work. I see ā€œfree timeā€ and wonder what ELSE I can cram into it.

@antiquity Hah! A rough situation for sure. Christian Thibaudeau has actually made such suggestions for dietary compliance. Just a small barrier of entry before engaging. I wanna go get a fast food burger? Sure: 10 minutes of mountain climbers first. Often, in the course of those mountain climbers, the craving passes, but if it doesn’t: at least I burned some calories first!

Usually, I’ll do something stupid conditioning wise and then get 2 burgers!

You remind me of how much I miss In n Out. No better post workout burger.

Although I used to eat this EVERY day at work over the summer when I was your age

But lettuce wrapped, of course

And then I wondered why I had LDL issues later in life, haha.

The sad part is burgers from fast food places (around me) are almost the same prices as delish and nutritious foods from restaurants (at least the Jamaican place’s jerk chicken)

Like $10 for a 3 patty burger or $10 for jerk chicken. It’s a hard choice

Oh man, no joke. Fast food burgers cost the same as sit down burgers. There’s legit no reason to get fast food these days anymore except for it being yummy. It’s not cheaper than eating at home, nor is it faster.

This made me think of a place I forgot about near me. They have a bunch of weird burgers like a PB&J burger, Nutella Burger, Mac and cheese burger, Cookie butter burger, and then a lot more normal ones. I might have to go there at some point soon.

Maybe this needs to go in the Flame Free thread, but MAN was I disappointed with In n Out. It was hyped up SO much before I moved to SoCal, and when I got there… meh. It’s a good $4 burger, I’ll give it that, but nowhere near worth the hype.

Now Steak ā€˜n Shake on the other hand…

We had a place in Central Coast CA like that

Burger for every letter of the alphabet. Proof that a good burger is just plain awesome.

Oh hell, I just said Good Burger. Now I gotta…

This is the biggest issue: it can’t possibly live up to the cult of personality built around it. As a San Diego native, I will go to my grave over it, but I ALSO fully appreciate that it’s sold as a religious experience and outsiders won’t ā€œget itā€.

On that note that, my wife is traveling, had a layover in the Dallas Air Port and FINALLY had REAL brisket, and just like that she suddenly ā€œgot itā€, after a few years of trying sub-par brisket. It’s amazing when that moment arrives, haha.

Now she’ll never be able to have any other kind again!

Nor should she! Sub-par brisket is an affront.

BREAKFAST/DRIVE TO WORK

2 mile walk

Notes:

  • Gonna highlight the program deviations first and then expand: dead bench was not prescribed: just bench. No pull aparts RX for this workout. All supersets/circuits are program deviations. Band tricep work is supposed to be cables.

  • I feel like dead bench meets the intent of this program moreso than a traditional bench. Pause bench would be close, but this was SO brutal and I’m such a fan of how it turned out. I should have done a better job of remembering where I had the straps set up, as I spent more time on set-up than I’d care for, but this just hammered the holy hell out of me and did a fantastic job of driving home ā€œeat more food dummy!ā€ I did my absolute best to let the second rep be as brutal as the first, but you can’t get that stretch reflex 100% away. Pro tip: I wore a beanie to keep from ripping out the hair in the back of my head every time I got set up on the bench. The axle is a GREAT choice for dead bench as well, because it doesn’t hurt nearly as much when it makes contact with the straps. I honestly could just keep writing about this. I love the lack of technical element to the dead bench: it just suits all of what I am so much.

  • Pull aparts, because always pull aparts.

  • Dips are almost like my dessert for eating my veggies. I’m not sure what it is about me that is absolutely built for heavy dipping, but it’s nice to lean into it.

  • I was absolutely gassed getting into the military press. Original plan was BtN press, but I think I’d have to use an empty bar at that point. Jamie prescribes short and fast reps for this, no lockout, keep tension on the muscle. The pushdowns and extensions were just making the most of what I had. Originally I went wide stance to anchor my feet on the overhead work, but I eventually got it figured out.

  • SO happy I got in all the required work for the day before starting work. It’s awesome when whatever training I have is my choice vs an obligation. I’d like to get in a weighted vest walk with the dog later, and maybe a short quick conditioning chipper, but I’m done. In that regard, the mandatory walk has got to be one of the most positive things I’ve introduced into my daily routine. Jamie is so underappreciated in his genius.

  • Finding my way with the nutrition. Wanted to try a fed session and went with the egg/egg white combo vs my traditional approach of sunflower seed/nut butters. Trying to see how far down the rabbithole I can chase this carnivore thing. But also thinking maybe just keep up the Apex Predator and just add more shakes as needed. I’m doing two meals a day now vs one, and sticking with bone-in/fatty meat in the evening and lean meat with eggs for lunch. Lean meat is piedmontese grassfed steak tips, eggs are pasture raised whole eggs, because STEAK AND EGGS IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER. Fatty meat is chicken drumsticks and wings until I run out, and then maybe breaking out the rack of lamb.

  • I’m using this first week of the program more as a break-in as far as the ā€œfeastingā€ goes. I’m very slowly upping calories and intake, just to re-adjust to having food in my guts in general. But I DO have a plan. The wife is running a half-marathon on Sunday and the kiddo has been awesome while our lives have been chaos, so we’re going out to a combination Pizza Buffet/Fun-Zone to celebrate. I’ve been to this place SO many times and always just terrorize the salad bar. My plan is to actually go, cut loose and enjoy myself. A real deal celebratory feast for coming out of this famine: working 7 12s in a row straight into a week of 8s, living off shakes and pushing myself to my limit. Sunday will kickstart the next 2-3 weeks of feasting and growing. I really love the ā€œstoryā€ this protocol tells. It’s got me totally bought in.

EDIT:

  • @QuadQueen I have an idea that I know is crazy, so I wanna loop you in just to see ā€œhowā€ crazy it is. Thoughts on a raw egg in a protein shake? I’m thinking about throwing that into my ā€œwake and shakeā€. When I was a kid, we used to throw raw eggs into actual milkshakes to make them more frothy. I hear lots of opinions regarding the nutrition of a raw egg vs a cooked one. Also aware of the safety considerations. But I’d really dig just the QuadQueen perspective in general there.

Go for it! If you’re not risk averse regarding the Salmonella potential, then there’s no other real reason to not. From a nutrition standpoint, there’s not a huge amount of benefit to raw vs. cooked. Cooking does decrease the antioxidant content of the yolk a bit, but other than that the other differences are negligible.

For what it’s worth, I know a guy that drinks 3 raw egg yolks first thing in the morning and has been for doing it for years. He’s strong as hell and ripped too, so maybe there’s something to it. LOL!

@QuadQueen well hell, now I’m sold, haha. I really appreciate that! I’ll try to remember tonight and see how it turns out. Eggs are just magic to me.

Totally meant to throw this into the log notes, but my plan for tomorrow’s pull session has become high handle trap bar pulls, to the absolute delight of @flappinit I am sure. As far as intent of the program goes, I feel like that nails it. I could not possibly pull any heavier than I can with that. And then I intend to flip the handles around for the bent over rows, which I’m really excited about and love the homage it will pay to Paul Kelso. In turn, I’m thinking some real deal Kelso Shrugs instead of the laterals/face pulls that are programmed in. And then it looks like a curl fest that will make @TrainForPain proud.

Ha! I’m positively giddy!

I should have added - I’m plagiarizing the raw egg bit (thanks to you and @QuadQueen). I loved Rocky with a passion as a kid, and actually did this before my mom made me stop. I can’t wait to report tomorrow that I added 600 lbs to all lifts!

Hell yeah man! It’s funny: I’m thinking of it as less than hardcore, because it’s taking my water and powder shake and making it frothy and yummy, haha.

@T3hPwnisher and @TrainForPain - Let me know how it goes and also, I am not liable if either of you get Salmonella. LOL!

I’ll just call that the start of the next ā€œfamineā€ phase, haha.
