The funny thing is, the whole “judgment free” bull shit is ironic: they are judging people that are more advanced lifters than they are.
Also, I don’t recall ever seeing an overweight person laughed at in a Gold’s or other “serious” gym (what the fuck is that?). That is THEIR misconception of “other” gyms.
This. I’ve trained at Golds, World, Powerhouse, Ballys - lots of commercial gyms over the years - and mostly it’s the same shit. A bunch of regular people - fat, average, no muscle. Then there’s the folks who are in decent shape, and a few really good physiques. Never did I see someone point at a fatty and scream “PIG!!” - I mean, really, PF is the same as any other commercial gym for the most part.
The lunk alarm and fucking Pizza night are about the only thing I can see that’s any different than any other gym. Oh yea and the tootsie rolls on the counter.
I think the ads play on out of shape folks perception of what in shape people are saying to themselves about them, not what is actually verbalized in reality.

But it isn’t being said and that is the point.
I notice in many instances that an extremely obese person will eye you down expecting you to stare at them. I usually try to not even notice them but damn sure wouldn’t laugh at one or act like they shouldn’t be there and don’t see anyone else acting like that either.
I am betting it would get world wide coverage if a gym starting acting the same in reverse…only catering to people who looked like serious bodybuilders, powerlifters and fitness models and ringing gongs when a fat person sits on an exercise bike.

I’ve never understood this either. I used to train at a gym with two seriously obese guys, and rather than thing “damn, that guy needs to pound down another burger” I thought “Unlike the vast majority of folks, he’s brave enough to show up in public and exercise in an effort to do something about his weight. Good for him.”
Seems to me that the judgment that Planet Fitness is making about their members is “yep, you’re a slob, but we’ve set up a place where you can be with other slobs and not worry about having to work hard.”

when i see this and i notice the guy is still around 4 weeks later i make a point of saying “i’ve seen you in here a couple of times, making good progress” or something along those lines, even if it’s not true just to provide them with some encouragement
sigh… My gym is a former 24Hour affiliate(now World’s Gym) and looks like a gay nightclub at 3AM. Not that I’ve ever been to a gay nightclub…but with the low lighting, shitty music and abundance of gay guys, I can guess so.

planet fitness is awesome. I wish more locations opened up to suck away all these women, men and old people who don’t really want to work out for results but want to say they go to a gym. I wish one opened up right next to my gym.
Dear god I hope one opens next to my gym for this exact same reason.
