I guess each location is different. I went to one PF for a couple months and they had 2 squat racks, and never said a thing about me deadlifting/clean and pressing. I hoped someone would say something to me, but it never happened.
The place is ugly as sin and the clientele was fat, but for only $15 a month I couldn’t complain. Most of the people who worked there didn’t give a shit, and their trainers were pathetic.
The funny thing is, the whole “judgment free” bull shit is ironic: they are judging people that are more advanced lifters than they are.
Also, I don’t recall ever seeing an overweight person laughed at in a Gold’s or other “serious” gym (what the fuck is that?). That is THEIR misconception of “other” gyms. They are projecting because they are judging more advanced lifters negatively, but then inverting that projection to make it seem like the other lifters are judging THEM for being out of shape.
Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. I actually thought the gym itself was some running internet joke until I saw one. Reminds me of Ben Stiller and his gym in the movie Dodge Ball.

Crazy times.
I hope planet fitness never comes to Australia, although I suppose it would be nice to have a place for all of the power cage curlers.
Anyway, I would like to encourage my fellow T-nationers to to follow my movement of not supporting the large coorperate groups anyway.
No McDonalds, no subway etc. Go to family run sammich shop.
Dont buy your clothes from a large retailer, go to a smal independant shop.
Dont go to Gloria Jeans. The coffee is better at the little Italian cafe across the road.
Get my drift? Dont support any large coorperates, franchisers, large groups etc.
I realized a few days ago that planet fitness actually serves a great benefit to anyone who trains even somewhat regularly.
I noticed that this year my gym didn’t have the usual flood of new year’s resolutioners that is typical of this time of year. In fact, I didn’t notice any new members at all. Sure, the cardio area has been a bit more crowded than normal, but nothing crazy.
I drove a Planet Fitness the other night which is reasonably close to the gym I train at, and every space in the lot was taken. To say it was crowded is an understatement; they’ve become the go-to destination for people who really don’t want to train, which means I don’t have to wait for equipment just because it’s January.

Is this planet fitness stuff serious?
Wow and here was me thinking that curls in the squat rack was the worst it could get.
Nope. I have witnessed curls in the smith machine.
Now that right there… thats some scary shit.
But being in a collage gym I see some very disturbing stuff.
Like last week, I walked into the weight room ready for a good lower body session which I start with box squats.
Now there is only one power rack in my gym, which is fine since no one else ever seems to use it so its pretty easy for me to monopolize it when im training.
So I walk in and see that the power rack is occupodoo by some guy my age with a head band and jean short shorts on(I shit you not), hes doing curls and I cringe a little.
“No big deal, ill start with Hack squats until hes done”.
Half way though my sets I look over to check if hes still using the rack and what I see next litrally knocked me too my ass.
He had the bar set about half way up in the rack with no weight on it, he had a resistance band looped around the bar and was lying on the floor flexing his leg against the band.

This. I’ve trained at Golds, World, Powerhouse, Ballys - lots of commercial gyms over the years - and mostly it’s the same shit. A bunch of regular people - fat, average, no muscle. Then there’s the folks who are in decent shape, and a few really good physiques. Never did I see someone point at a fatty and scream “PIG!!” - I mean, really, PF is the same as any other commercial gym for the most part.
The lunk alarm and fucking Pizza night are about the only thing I can see that’s any different than any other gym. Oh yea and the tootsie rolls on the counter.
